Abstract:

Doutoramento em Biologia - Instituto Superior de Agronomia<br>Bisphenol A (BPA) is an extensively utilized endocrine disruptor for which human exposure is considered generalized through ingestion. Information regarding BPA effects on vascular and digestive tract tissues is scarce. Therefore, in this work primary Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) and human colon adenocarcinona cell line HT29 were used to evaluate BPA effects at two distinct low-dose concentrations relevant in terms of human health risk assessment. BPA differentially affects the cell types studied, with more

Abstract:
Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) is a chronic optic neuropathy that results in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration, cupping of the optic nerve head (ONH) and subsequent loss of vision. In humans, PACG occurs as a result of a plateau iris or more commonly, a pupillary block. Increased Intraocular pressure and reduced axial length are some of the predisposing factors to PACG. The condition occurs in several breeds of dogs and the prognosis for affected animals is typically poor. Unlike PACG in humans, the mechanism of PACG in canines involves the gradual collapse of the ciliary cleft w

Mice are the premier model organisms to study human biology and disease, but there is still debate about the extent to which molecular mechanisms are conserved between human and mouse. With the advance of next-generation sequencing technologies, comparative transcriptomics can be carried out at unprecedented resolution. In this thesis we confirm findings that human and mouse transcriptomes are globally conserved and we identify and characterize the properties of a core set of genes with constrained expression between the two species. Additionally, we show that clustering of gene expression acr

Métodos: A expressão do CXCR7, CXCR4, IDH1 e HIF1alfa fo

Abstract:
Neurological diseases are complex and difficult diseases to study. Although new approaches and therapies have been developed for other disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) still remains seemingly inexorable. MS is the archetypal complex disease; it is a paradigm of debilitating neuropathology. Discounting trauma, MS is the most common chronic neurological condition resulting in disability affecting young adults. In its typical form it primarily affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves and is characterised by lesions in the central ne
