Baker-Bates, Piers, and Irene Brooke, eds. Portrait Cultures of the Early Modern Cardinal. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463725514.

Full text
Abstract:
The visual legacy of early modern cardinals constitutes a vast and extremely rich body of artworks, many of superb quality, in a variety of media, often by well-known artists and skilled craftsmen. Yet cardinal portraits have primarily been analyzed within biographical studies of the represented individual, in relation to the artists who created them, or within the broader genre of portraiture. Portrait Cultures of the Early Modern Cardinal addresses questions surrounding the production, collection, and status of the cardinal portrait, covering diverse geographies and varied media. Examining the development of cardinals' imagery in terms of their multi-layered identities, this volume considers portraits of 'princes of the Church' as a specific cultural phenomenon reflecting cardinals' unique social and political position.

Waters, C. Kenneth. Ask Not “What Is an Individual?”. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190636814.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophers of biology typically pose questions about individuation by asking “what is an individual?” For example, we ask: what is a species, what is an organism, and what is a gene? In this chapter, the author presents his account of the gene concept to motivate a more pragmatic approach. Instead of asking “what is a gene?,” he asks, “how do biologists individuate genes?,” “for what purposes?,” and “do their practices of individuating genes serve these purposes?” He proposes that philosophers use this approach when analyzing concepts of organisms and biological individuals. Following philosophical pragmatism, he argues that philosophers should view practices of individuating organisms in terms of a three-place relation: between the world, ideas, and human purposes and actions. He concludes with three lessons: an ontological, an epistemological, and a meta-philosophical lesson, which he suggests apply to philosophy of science generally and to philosophy and metaphysics at large.

Canli, Turhan. Molecular Psychology. Edited by Turhan Canli. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199753888.013.18.

Full text
Abstract:
Molecular psychology is the study of behavior and its underlying brain systems using the tools of molecular biology. Although a variety of biological tools have been used to discover the relation of brain and behavior since the beginning of psychology, these have largely been confined to nonhuman animal models or brain-damaged patients. Technical advances in the past two decades in molecular genetics and in noninvasive brain imaging have transformed the field. These advances made it possible to conduct detailed examinations—across all species and subjects including healthy human volunteers—of the relation among genes, brains, and behavior; gene-by-environment (G×E) interactions; and the underlying regulatory mechanisms of gene expression through life experience and other environmental variables. This chapter provides a brief history of the major milestones of this field, along with updates from the contemporary literature, and introduces the reader to the contents of this volume.

Abstract:
The rhythmic and synchronized contraction of atria and ventricles is essential for efficient pumping of blood throughout the body. This process relies on the proper generation and conduction of the cardiac electrical impulse. Electrophysiological properties differ in various regions of the heart, revealing intrinsic heterogeneities rooted, at least in part, in regional differences in expression of ion channel and gap junction subunit genes. A causal relation between transcription factors and such regionalized gene expression has been established. Abnormal cardiac electrical function and arrhythmias in the postnatal heart may stem from a developmental changes in gene regulation. Genome-wide association studies have provided strong evidence that common genetic variation at developmental gene loci modulates electrocardiographic indices of conduction and repolarization and susceptibility to arrhythmia. Functional aspects are illustrated by description of selected prenatally occurring arrhythmias and their possible mechanisms. We also discuss recent findings and provide background insight into these complex mechanisms.

Haig, Brian D. Meta-Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190222055.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 5 is concerned with the conceptual foundations of meta-analysis. It deals with large-scale issues having to do with meta-analysis and the nature of science. Meta-analysis is an approach to data analysis that involves the quantitative, or statistical, analysis of data analyses from a number of existing primary studies in a common domain. At its simplest, meta-analysis involves computing the average effect size for a group of studies. The chapter begins by discussing Gene Glass’s rationale for meta-analysis. It then examines David Sohn’s argument that meta-analysis does not produce genuine scientific discoveries. The roles of meta-analysis in relation to the processes of phenomena detection and scientific explanation are also considered.
