Abstract:
Since the military uprising occurred on July 18, 1936 and until several weeks passed, the generals who supported him were unclear if it was more advisable to establish whether or not the unification of the military command, as a way of getting a better strategy the victory of the civil war has just begun. It was on September 21 when the decision to entrust the leadership of the army to a single general, Francisco Franco, who became "generalissimo of the national forces of land, sea and air and commanding general of the armies of operations" was adopted. From that moment, it remained to realize the powers attached lead the charge of "generalissimo". After several discussions, Franco took over the presidency on 1 October in the Captaincy General of Burgos, in a ceremony in which the president of the National Defense Council proceeded to transmit the power. In this communication it is to analyze the details of this ceremony, the first words of Franco as head of state brand and the impact all this had on the press of the time.

Abstract:
This article seeks to revisit those common points that took place in the debate about the problem of the historical memory that, after the death of Franco, could not be realized, clouded by the fiction overcoming the transition. As Francisco Caudet (2008) explains, it is not enough to dig up dead people, assign them a name and pass them on to the memory of the past. The dead have families and political projects opposed to the Francoist regime of Catholic nationalism. In this sense, the evaluation of Juan Benet’s essays presupposes seeing the side not only critical and theoretical with respect to fiction but also political, that facet that, in general, is dissociated from the Benetian authorial production.

Abstract:
The lastimportant military conflict involving Spanish troops hasn’t been studied in-depth until now from the academic field. This thesis aimsto cover some of the gapsin the literature about that war, providinga point of view distantfrom the ones that can be found in the current literature. Moreover, I intend to give a broad vision of the conflict, which untilnowhas been limited to the military clash between Spanish troops and Moroccan guerrillas. It’salso my aim tothink thoroughly abouttheunderlying causes of the conflict, by relating it to the decolonization of the Magreb context and the internal political situation of Morocco after its independence. These issues have been largely ignored in the literature, as well as the determining factors of the United States’ political action, another point being dealt within this thesis. Lastly, I linked the consequences of the struggletothe international policy of Morocco after King Hassan II ascended the throne.

Turner, Adam Chase. "Framing a Pope: Analyzing Media Frames in The New York Times Coverage of Pope Francis." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91391.

Full text
Abstract:
This study extends notions of framing theory by drawing from research analyzing the framing of Pope Francis within coverage from The New York Times. The mass media has, since the election of Pope Francis in 2013, provided him extensive coverage on a myriad of issues. Previous studies have noted Pope Francis' propensity to draw massive amounts of media attention towards his actions and statements, even noting the potential for Pope Francis to control the media narrative through his own implementation of frames. Drawing on framing theory, this study examines the ways in which coverage of Pope Francis is defined by The New York Times by finding relationships between the issues addressed in Papal coverage, the frames implemented within this coverage, the valence of the messages, and the presentation of Pope Francis himself. This thesis yields that coverage of Pope Francis within The New York Times has shifted from positive valence to primarily neutral valence when comparing the first three years of his papacy to second three years. The findings of this thesis could potentially inform future studies which may wish to determine potential for frame transfer due to the content of articles or for studies which may wish to delve deeper into the issue with a much larger sample.
Master of Arts
Since Pope Francis’ election, the mass media has focused heavily on his statements and actions. Previous literature attests to the notion that Pope Francis is unique among his predecessors when it comes to media coverage, primarily due to his propensity to make statements or moral recommendations that seemingly oppose or deviate from traditional Catholic values. This thesis explores the relationship between Pope Francis and the American mass media by analyzing 226 articles published by The New York Times within the first six years of his Papacy. The findings of this thesis point to notions related to the valence of Papal coverage, which began as primarily positive but have shifted in nature from the beginning of Francis’ Papacy. The findings of this thesis also point towards the religious nature of Papal coverage and also the potential for sexscandal coverage to shift representation of the Pope.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the processes and political consequences of the crisis which destabilizes the French royal authority during the short-lived reign of young Francis II and propels the kingdom into the French troubles of religion. In the wake of the Italian Wars and the tragic death of Henry II, the accession of a fifteen-year-old king who refuses the power that is handed down to him entails a political contestation that is unprecedented in sixteenth-century France. The situation further deteriorates for the monarchical authority since the royal government led by the King’s uncles, the Guises, responds to the successful Protestant Reformation with severe repressive measures against heretics. In March 1560, the failed Amboise conspiracy reveals to the royal authority the extent and interconnectedness of the political and religious discontents. Thanks to figures of paramount importance to sixteenth-century France, such as Catherine de’ Medici, the Cardinal of Lorraine or Michel de l’Hospital, a process of major political reorientation is then initiated : the royal authority opts for religious moderation and an appeasement policy it tries to adapt to both the “necessities of times” and the increasing Catholic and Protestant momentums. Though the reign of Francis II opens the era of civil wars, it also opens that of political trials and experimentations which will eventually bring about the Wars of Religion edicts. This work is based on a detailed analysis of the chain of events, and endeavours to reveal the complexity of a reign “at the crossroads of times” as well as its determining role in the political reflection of the second half of the sixteenth century in France

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how politics was done at the level of the parliamentary constituencies at the time of the treaty of Amiens 1802-1803. This is achieved through two case studies of the elections in Middlesex and Nottingham, which are investigated as social practices. This thesis argues that understandings of masculinity and national identity, as well as questions about the nature of the constitution and citizen rights were central to participants in the extraparliamentary political process. Collective emotions were also highly important in the process of mobilising political support, and this thesis emphasises that participation in these elections was a collective effort; men and women from all levels of society were significant political actors. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates the importance of competences such as knowledge about the organisation of crowds and political violence in the performance of the election.

Abstract:
AbstractRobert Leslie Ellis was born in Bath on 25 August 1817. His father, Francis Ellis (1772–1842), had held a position in the Admiralty, but resigned when he became the principal heir of his uncle Henry Ellis, formerly Governor of Nova Scotia, who on his death in 1806 left him £10,000 and extensive landholdings in Ireland and elsewhere. Francis and his wife Mary, née Kilbee (1777–1847), had six children, of whom Robert, born in 1817, was the youngest. The family lived in a succession of large houses in Bath, where Francis Ellis, a well-known local figure, was one of the founders of the Bath Literary and Scientific Institution, founded in 1823. The Institution had a well-stocked library which took in both British and continental books and periodicals, and the teenaged Ellis frequented it regularly, reading avidly and conversing with the adult members, who included scholars and scientists of some distinction. His father involved himself in Ellis’s education and was himself a well-educated and inquiring man; his uncle had described him as ‘really a very deserving young man of uncommon abilities and possessed of more scientific and other knowledge than [one] could expect at his years.’ In an account of the Bath literati published in 1854, Francis Ellis was included in a list of ‘men with intelligent and well-informed minds’, and a later supplement stated that ‘Francis Ellis had an enlarged mind, was a good classic, a superior mathematician, and a generally well-informed man’. Ellis’s library contained several hundred books in 1841, when an inventory was taken.

Spain is typically described as having been a neutral country during World War II. However, during the war, the Fascist ideology of Spain’s General Francisco Franco was closely aligned to that of the Nazis’ National Socialism. Unlike Hitler’s Germany, however, Franco’s Spain did not enact anti-Jewish policies or engage in the persecution of Jews. More than 25,000 Jews were able to escape Nazi-controlled Europe to Spain during the war. No immovable property—private, communal, or heirless—was taken from Jews or other targeted groups in Spain during the war. As a result, no immovable property restitution laws were required. Spain endorsed the Terezin Declaration in 2009 and the Guidelines and Best Practices in 2010.

“Everyone is starving,” the innkeeper said. “The rations we get aren’t enough to keep a dog alive and who but the rich can afford to buy in the black market?,” she asked. These were the desperate words of an elderly woman in charge of a guesthouse in the small town of Aguilar de la Frontera, 30 miles south of the Andalusian city of Córdoba. It was 1949 and her interlocutor was Gerald Brenan, a British writer who had produced an influential account of the origins of the Spanish Civil War (1936–9). Brenan was traveling back to Spain after an absence of over a decade. Throughout his journey, he felt besieged by people anxious to express their views. He turned the diary of his trip into a poignant exposé of life in Spain under the regime of General Francisco Franco, who had emerged victorious from the Civil War. Brenan’s narrative is full of vivid first-hand accounts: “[t]he working classes are dying of hunger,” said a shopkeeper; “General Franco is teaching Spaniards how to live without eating,” protested a man on a bus....

Abstract:
For the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, Pablo Picasso unveiled a vivid portrayal of human suffering entitled Guernica. Inspired by the brutal civilian attack on a small Basque town in northern Spain, the painting became an artistic indictment of fascism, exposing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War to the world. Gernika suffered this major urban trauma on April 26, 1937, when Hitler’s Condor Legion demolished the town at the request of General Francisco Franco, leader of the National Forces and subsequent dictator of Spain. While the town of Gernika lacked the global prominence and political freedom to convey its own account of the bombing, the Picasso painting, in conjunction with the international press, exposed the brutality of the attack. In the ensuing decades, the painting traveled the globe promoting a message of martyrdom and suffering. This international attention occurred in sharp contrast to Gernika’s concealed recovery, which received little publicity under the censorship of Franco’s fascist regime. Franco deliberately targeted Gernika because of its cultural significance to the Basque people, for whom the town symbolized democracy and autonomy. In attacking this town, which held no military or strategic significance, Franco aimed to destroy the symbolic center of Basque self-rule and crush his enemy’s morale. This deadly assault affected the lives of all of Gernika’s citizens, killing many, scattering survivors, and almost completely destroying the town’s physical structure. Following the bombing, the town experienced a precarious recovery. The man who ordered Gernika to be destroyed guided its reconstruction and dictated the rules of the Spanish public realm from 1939 to 1975. Franco simultaneously directed a rapid physical restoration and a strict program of Basque cultural subjugation. The politics of recovery meant that decades passed before town members could publicly mourn or openly place blame. Under these circumstances, recovery in Gernika exhibited distinct physical, emotional, and cultural dimensions. Physical resilience denotes the ability of a city to rebuild its physical structure. It considers how the city was rebuilt, who was in charge of the rebuilding process, and the politics involved in physical reconstruction. Emotional resilience refers to the ability of individuals, families, and communities to cope and heal from trauma.

The thesis widely sustained by scholars and reflected in public opinion is that the institutionalized pattern of European integration contributed to isolate and weaken the political regime that generalissimo Francisco Franco established after his victory in the Spanish Civil War (1936-9) and headed until his death in November 1975. In Spain, during the struggle for democracy under and immediately following Franco’s dictatorship, membership in the European Communities became emblematic of a collective desire for democratic consolidation and social modernization, as well as the fastest route to elevate the Spanish standard of living in line with Europe’s most advanced societies. This notion of the Europeanization of Spain has made it difficult to conceive the Spanish policy of the European Communities during the Franco era as anything other than a significant element in the combat against Francoism. It is indisputable that the Axis stigma prevented Francoist Spain’s membership to the European Communities. Yet the absence of membership constitutes neither the beginning nor the end, nor even the most important component of the story. From exclusion, a multiplicity of possibilities sprouted, including active support. Although the rescue concept emerged from the analysis of the Six, it could be extended to Franco Spain. The purpose of the Spanish EEC strategy was to generate material prosperity in Spain to maintain the dictatorship’s grip on the country, not to advance the arrival of democracy.

Chapter three explains how the Berlin-born scholar Francis Lieber refined the Union’s moral vision of hard yet humane war into a coherent set of rules applicable to the entire Union army. The chapter devotes extensive attention to the life and ideas of Francis Lieber, and the Lieber-drafted General Orders No. 100, the “Lieber code,” the most detailed and influential code of military conduct to emerge from the Civil War. The 157 articles of the Lieber code collectively instructed Federal officers and soldiers on how to reconcile in practice the hard hand of war with humane restraint.

This chapter returns to the site of the largest US- and UN-run POW camp during the war to go behind the barbed wire fence to follow the event that squarely placed the POW controversy onto the global media map: the kidnapping of US camp commander Brigadier General Francis Dodd on May 7, 1952, by a group of mostly Korean Communist prisoners of war. The Dodd kidnapping revealed how the Korean War was a conflict that the Geneva Conventions had not anticipate. Questions about sovereignty, diplomacy, and international humanitarian law come to the fore as the chapter places the United Nations Command (UNC) camp on Koje Island in the same frame as the negotiating table at Panmunjom.

Full text
Abstract:
When a Francis hydraulic turbine operates under different working heads at small flow condition, the fluid in the flow passage will generate vortex shedding near the blade leading-edge and form the channel vortex in the blade passages due to the mismatch between the outlet angle of guide vane and the inlet angle of runner blade. The severity of channel vortex will trigger high-frequency vibration or generate unit resonant vibration, affecting the operational stability of the turbines. In this paper some typical operation points were chosen out for the steady simulation of a model turbine according to a unit hill-chart. The computational domain was chosen as the whole flow passage from the inlet of the volute to the outlet of the draft tube. Based on RNG k–ε turbulence model, the internal flows was simulated, and the occurrence of vortex between the turbine runner blades was discussed. The numerical results show that the vortex motion near the development-line (IVDL) is stronger than that near the channel vortex inception-line (IVIL) in channel vortex zone marked in the hill-chart. The velocity triangle is used to explain the reasons that channel vortex occur in the suction side at high working head while in the pressure side at the low working head, and two different forms and formation mechanism of the channel vortex were analyzed.

Abstract:
Generally, cavitation occurs very easily when liquid local pressure in the Francis turbine falls below the saturated vapor pressure. It will injure the hydropower plant seriously by some problems, and has become one of the main concerns in the field of hydraulic machinery. In this paper, we present steady simulation on cavitation performed through the whole passage of a prototype Francis turbine with mixture model for multiphase flow, and full cavitation model for cavitation effect, from the commercial code of FLUENT 6.1. The simulation is conducted at several operating conditions, and the internal flow conditions and the critical cavitation number were obtained for each case. The simulation results indicate that the internal flow condition in the flow parts before the runner is not affected by the cavitating flow. The tendency of the cavitating flow in the runner and draft tube agrees well with the turbine empirical results, and the critical cavitation number has been quantitatively predicted.

Abstract:
A generic real-time hydroelectric plant simulator has been implemented and validated. The simulator has the capability to run entirely in a simulation mode or to use actual control components running in parallel with simulated components. This flexibility results in a wide range of applicability, for example, it may be used for training of I&C personnel, tuning of turbine governors or testing the performance of actual control equipment. A further important feature of the simulator is its generic nature. A user-friendly interface is employed to parameterize any particular hydroelectric unit that uses a Pelton, Kaplan, or Francis turbine. The simulator includes mathematical models for the major systems in a hydroelectric plant, namely, hydraulic system (dam, water conduits, and turbine), electric generation (synchronous generator and excitation system) and power system (electrical grid). The simulator has been implemented on a GNU/Linux operative system with a Fedora Core 6 distribution and within a complete simulation environment, which includes real-time conditions management, graphical interfaces to operate the simulator, databases to store variables, and post-processing tools to visualize results. For control equipment testing applications an I/O data system is employed for the interaction between the simulator and the control equipment being tested. Comprehensive tests have been conducted and results compared with available plant data as validation. Three hydroelectric plants have been selected for tests: a 55 MW Pelton turbine plant, a 105 MW Kaplan turbine plant, and a 180 MW Francis turbine plant. A wide range of tests can be simulated, for example: turbine startup, disturbances in turbine speed or load, load rejection, electrical or mechanical trips, etc. Comparisons between calculations and plant data show in general relatively good agreement. A few selected tests are presented.

Abstract:
The surplus water head of the industrial cooling tower is generally 4 to 15 meters. Using the surplus water head, a Francis turbine with super-low specific speed is designed to replace the fan motor in the cooling tower, which may achieve the purpose of power saving. This turbine is different from the conventional turbine used in hydropower station. To drive the fan to a rated speed, the turbine is required to have high efficiency and small size to meet the installation requirements under a certain flow or water head. Little research work on this type of turbine has been done home and abroad. In this paper, the runner blade airfoil was chiefly designed by three-dimensional numerical simulation through the whole flow passage of the turbine. According to the features of the turbine’s work environment, metal elliptical volute and single row ring guide vanes were applied in the structural design. By comparison and analysis an optimal model of which the efficiency can reach 86% was selected to make the physical model. The model test shows that the designed super-low specific speed Francis turbine can meet the dimension requirement and has high efficiency of 85.3% and stable performance that can be popularized and applied in the capable local places. The new type Francis turbine with super-low specific speed studied and developed in this paper can achieve the goal of reducing the energy consumption of the cooling tower. It can provide reference of using the surplus energy to the other industry.

Abstract:
The application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the redesign or rehabilitation of hydraulic turbines appears to be necessary in order to improve their efficiency and cost-effectiveness beyond the traditional redesign practices. The runner geometry considered within the computational domain was modelled by using a three-dimensional laser triangulation scanner coupled with a portable coordinate measurement system. The runner geometry was generated by a number of 3D sub models, one for each of the main components of the runner, crown, band and a blade. In order to obtain a blade geometry a portable coordinate measurement system based on optical digitalization technology (scanner technology) was used. A numerical optimization methodology is developed and applied to a Francis turbine. The hydrodynamic performance analysis was investigated by application of a three dimensional Navier-Stoke commercial turbomachinery oriented CFD code. Analysis of the flow through the spiral case and stay vanes was carried out so as to include appropriate flow effects induced by these components and boundary conditions at the inlet of the wicket. A CFD analysis for the wicket and runner was carried out to generate the so called reference solution. Then, the runner blades design was optimized by a process implemented in a commercial CFD code which combines genetic algorithms and a trained artificial neural network (ANN). A database of geometries and their respective CFD computations were computed in order to determine the optimum geometry for a given objective function. The flow within hydraulic turbines has a thin boundary layer and noticeable pressure gradients. Hence, the CFD computations were carried out using the Sparlat-Allmaras turbulence model. After optimization cycle convergence, an increment not only in efficiency but also in power was obtained. The optimized runner represented by a parametric model achieves considerably higher efficiency than the reference runner. Efficiency versus power curve was used to compare data from measurements at the power station for the reference runner versus the parametric optimized runner model. Results have shown that application of CFD based optimization can modify and improve runners design so as to increase the efficiency and power of installed hydraulic power stations.

Abstract:
The stress analysis of the runner due to different loading is one of the most important tools that contribute its structural integrity evaluation. Finite element method has shown to be a strong numerical technique to provide good engineering accuracy. In this paper, the flow induced stresses in a Francis turbine runner is presented by using the finite element analysis. Because of symmetry, only a section of the runner domain was used for the finite element analysis. The runner was modeled with twenty-node solid elements. Loads due to pressure on the blade were derived from CFD computations for the runner at different power conditions (100%, 85% and 75%) for a medium head hydro power plant. CFD computations were carried out using the Finite Volume Method implement within FINE™/Turbo by NUMECA. The turbulence mathematical model used for the CFD computation was the Sparlart-Allmaras. The mesh of the turbine runner included different computational domains. For the runner blades the computational domain (mesh block) was defined in order to capture the complete blade row. All mesh blocks were structured hexahedral. Centrifugal force based on the rotational speed was considered. Also, a combined type loading analysis was computed including both pressure and centrifugal force. Appropriate boundary conditions were set in order to obtain the results due to the different type of analysis. The number of finite elements included in the FEM model was able to capture the pressure gradients on the blade surfaces obtained from the CFD results, which were investigated by application of a three dimensional Navier-Stoke commercial turbomachinery oriented CFD code. Analysis of the flow through the spiral case and stay vanes was carried out so as to include appropriate flow effects induced by these components and boundary conditions at the inlet of the wicket. A CFD analysis for the wicket and runner was carried out to generate the so called CFD reference solution. The analysis presented in this paper represents an initial characterization in order to increase understanding about combined loads acting on blades and to establish a reference state of stresses further comparison after refurbishments or optimization of the runner blades for a medium head hydroelectric power station.

Abstract:
In case of the hydro turbine operated deviated from the designed condition, vortex ropes usually occur in the draft tube, and consequently generate large pressure oscillations. This kind of unsteady flow phenomenon is believed to be harmful for hydropower stations. In this paper, the authors designed a runner with vortex-control grooves and numerically simulate the flow in a Francis hydro turbine using the SAS-SST turbulence model. The pressure oscillations induced by the vortex rope under several operation conditions were analyzed based on the calculation results. It is indicated that the runner with vortex-control grooves can alleviate the pressure fluctuation at part load conditions. However, vortex-control grooves may enhance the swirling flow, and cause a small hydraulic performance drop at full load conditions. Thus, the design optimization of vortex-control grooves is necessary and will be conducted in the future.

Title: Spatial Structure in Chinese and Japanese Cities: A Comparative Study of the Supergrid and Superblock StructureAuthor Name: Xiao Fei Chen Affiliation: Faculty of Architecture Design and Planning, The University of Sydney Address: The Wilkinson Bldg G04, 148 City Rd, Darlington NSW 2008 Email Address: xche3951@Sydney.edu.au Mobile: 61 (02) 0450875226 Keywords: Supergrid and Superblock, Urban Morphology, China and JapanAbstract:Supergrids and Superblocks form an urban structure that extends across large areas of many Chinese and Japanese cities. The grid structures consist of wide roads at a city scale and define Superblocks, each with a network of narrower streets. My paper investigates the form-function interrelationships of these structures from morphological perspectives against a backcloth of theory that stresses an integrated network of streets as the prerequisite for a convenient and synergetic environment, with a specific focus on road/street networks, and mix and distribution of functional activities. Both qualitative and quantitative methods (including space syntax) are used to investigate four Superblocks from two pairs of Chinese and Japanese cities: Xi’an and Kyoto, and Nanjing and Osaka, from three aspects: integration, connection and interaction. Here I focus on the Nanjing-Osaka pair and the findings demonstrate clear but divergent patterns between the two cities, which are indicative of general differences between Chinese and Japanese Superblocks: there are very strong interrelationships between the street network and distribution of activities in the Japanese Superblocks, but these are much less evident in the Chinese Superblocks and this results largely from the extensive Chinese cultural practice of building walls around compounds. It reveals some structural disadvantages, leading to congestion of traffic and functional activities in some strategic locations in Chinese Superblocks. It also highlights some crucial qualities in the structures of many Japanese Superblocks that can provide inspiration for China’s future urban development and possibly for cities in other parts of the world.Reference:Alexander, C. Abstract:
The increasing movement of people and products caused by modern economic dynamics has burdened transportation systems. Both industrialized and developing countries have faced transportation problems in urbanized regions and in their major intercity corridors. Regional and highway congestion have become a chronic problem, causing longer travel times, economic inefficiencies, deterioration of the environment and quality of life. Congestion problems are also occurring at airports and air corridors, with similar negative effects. In the medium distance travel market (from 160 up to 800 km), too far to drive and too short to fly, High Speed Rail (HSR) technology has emerged as a modern transportation system, as it is the most efficient means for transporting large passenger volumes with high speed, reliability, safety, passenger comfort and environmental performance. HSR system’s feasibility will depend on its capacity to generate social benefits (i.e. increased mobility rates, reduced congestion, capacity increase and reduced environmental costs), to be balanced with the high construction, maintenance and operational costs. So, it is essential to select HSR corridors with strong passenger demands to maximize these benefits. The first HSR line was Japan’s Shinkansen service, a dedicated HSR system, between Tokyo and Osaka, launched in 1964, which is currently the most heavily loaded HSR corridor in the world. France took the next step, launching the Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV), in 1981, with a dedicated line with shared-use segments in urban areas, running between Paris and Lyon. Germany joined the venture in the early 1990 with the Inter City Express – ICE, with a coordinated program of improvements in existent rail infrastructure and Spain, in 1992, with the Alta Velocidad Espanola – AVE, with dedicated greenfield lines. Since then, these systems have continuously expanded their network. Currently, many countries are evaluating the construction of new HSR lines, with European Commission deeming the expansion of the Trans European Network as a priority. United Kingdom, for example, has just awarded construction contracts for building the so called HS2, an HSRexpanded line linking London to the northern territory. China, with its dynamic economic development, has launched its HSR network in 2007 and has sped up working on its expansion, and currently holds the highest HSR network. United States, which currently operates high speed trainsets into an operationally restricted corridor (the so called Northeast Corridor (NEC), linking Washington, New York and Boston), has also embarked into the high speed rail world with the launch of Californian HSR Project, currently under construction, aimed to link Los Angeles to San Francisco mega regions, the ongoing studies for Texas HSR project, to connect Dallas to Houston, into a wholly privately funding model, as well as studies for a medium to long term NEC upgrade for HSR. Australia and Brazil are also seeking to design and launch their first HSR service, into a time consuming process, in which a deep discussion about social feasibility and affordability is under way. This work is supposed to present an overview of HSR technology worldwide, with an assessment of the main technical, operational and economical features of Asian and European HSR systems, followed by a snapshot of the general guidelines applied to some planned HSR projects, highlighting their demand attraction potential, estimated costs, as well as their projected economic and environmental benefits.
