Abstract:
The General Medical Council (GMC) relies upon consultant psychiatrists throughout the UK to assist in carrying out its twin tasks under the health procedures of protecting patients and guiding doctors. One of the reasons for the fitness of a doctor to be seriously impaired is the illness, usually mental illness, of that doctor, and frequently doctors do not realise the extent to which their ability to carry out their work has been affected.

Most doctors are probably uncomfortably aware of the old joke that an alcoholic is someone who drinks more than his doctor. But how would one define a drug addict? Because of the taboo and illegal nature of drug misuse, if a similar doctor-based definition were coined, even in jest, it would cause a degree of consternation and indignation among the profession. However, the evidence that doctors abuse certain substances, in particular opiates and tranquillisers (Hughes et al, 1992), more commonly than the general population is well established.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the findings of research exploring the conduct of portfolio-based performance appraisal within medicine. Portfolios are now used throughout medical school and junior doctor training, in later specialist training, as well as to support the implementation of annual NHS appraisal of doctors as part of their employment contract. They will also play a role in the new medical governance quality assurance process known as revalidation, when it is implemented in 2010. The paper discusses how the growth of portfolio-based performance appraisal within medicine is bound up with the g

To what extent do personal constructs affect the relationship between doctor and patient when the ill patient does not readily recover with treatment? Questionnaires were returned anonymously by 609 patients with a self-reported diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, who were considered chronically ill. Findings were compared with those of an earlier study of a population of 397 general medical patients. The chronically ill patients lost an average of 65 days of work per year due to illness compared to general medical patients who missed six or fewer days per year because they were ill. The ch

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–76), Chairman Mao fundamentally reformed medicine so that rural people received medical care. His new medical model has been variously characterised as: revolutionary Maoist medicine, a revitalised form of Chinese medicine; and the final conquest by Western medicine. This paper finds that instead of Mao’s vision of a new ‘revolutionary medicine’, there was a new medical synthesis that drew from the Maoist ideal and Western and Chinese traditions, but fundamentally differed from all of them. Maoist medicine’s ultimate aim was doctors as peasant carer

Abstract:
The problem of informing the patient about a medical error is one of the most difficult in the theory and practice of doctor-patient interaction: the methodology is not developed enough, and the experience of doctors is poorly studied. The article reveals the main provisions of the CONES Protocol, which is used by doctors in the international community to inform the patient about a medical error. In this work, we studied and analyzed interviews (n=30) of doctors of various medical fields, where they revealed their own experience in informing the patient about a medical error, analyzing the fac
