Abstract:
Perception: A Multisensory Perspective examines multisensory interactions as the key process behind how we perceive our own body, control its movements, perceive and recognize objects, respond to edible objects, perceive space, and perceive time. In addition, the book discusses multisensory processing in synaesthesia, multisensory attention, and the role of multisensory processing in learning. Multisensory phenomena in these domains are used to identify general principles, to introduce formal models, to present experimental methods, to discuss pathologies, and to illustrate applications within the domain of multisensory processing. The book is written to be understandable to the educated non-specialist and will be of interest to professionals who need to take into account multisensory processing in domains such as, for instance, physiotherapy and neurological rehabilitation, human–computer interfaces, or marketing. As the chapters address topics that are mostly left out of standard perception or medical textbooks, this book will also serve as a useful reference for the specialist perception scientist and for clinicians specialized in the treatment of sensory deficits.

Abstract:
As the Borg rating of perceived exertion scale was not appropriate for children, investigators set about developing child-specific scales which employed numbers, words and/or images that were more familiar and understandable. Numerous studies have examined the validity and reliability of such scales as the CERT, PCERT and OMNI amongst children aged 5 to 16 years, across different modes of exercise (cycling, running, stepping, resistance exercise), protocols (intermittent vs. continuous, incremental vs. non-incremental) and paradigms (estimation vs. production). Such laboratory-based research has enabled the general conclusion that children can, especially with practise, use effort perception scales to differentiate between exercise intensity levels, and to self-regulate their exercise output to match various levels indicated by them. However, inconsistencies in the methodological approaches adopted diminish the certainty of some of the interpretations made by researchers. The scope for research in the application of effort perception in physical education and activity/health promotion is considerable.

Thakur, Anand C. Barriers to Optimal Pain Management in the General Surgery Population. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190457006.003.0003.

Abstract:
Barriers to the implementation of adequate pain control are multifactorial and encompass all caregivers. A complete list of barriers to adequate pain control would involve biopsychosocial factors, physiological factors, pharmacological concerns, and medical legal concerns. A short list of barriers to adequate pain control can be separated into physician knowledge, expectations and perceptions, nurses’ and other ancillary providers’ knowledge, expectations and perceptions, patient expectations and perception, management of acute pain, management of chronic pain, discrepancies of pain perception and different population groups, and both regulatory and formulary issues. To have an understanding of up-to-date recommendations and standards regarding evidence-based pain management requires a multimodal approach with a team of physicians.
