The inflationary presence of label journalistic style in professional and many academic productions has not gone accompanied, in general, of a solid reflection on his roots or his scope in journalistic texts. The reference to this notion has occurred in an acritical way, assimilated without taking an adequate distance and reproduced as a guarantee of objectivity, as a synonymous of a recipes arsenal to fight the subjectivity. For supporting the illusion that it is possible to conceive journalistic texts naked, undressed of the subjective look of that one who has written them.
This double contradiction, the paradoxical defence of an idea of style untied from his origins and, at the same time, undifferent to his empirical expression, to the effective manifestation in the mass media, has guided the interest of this thesis. And this has defined a research that takes as a principal object the development of a systematical proposal for a pragmastylistic study of informative/interpretive journalistic discourse, the theoretical and methodological criteria that mark the analysis of journalistic texts. The objective, finally, is to build a valid proposal to take the dust to different styles that coexist in printed media -in accordance with the definition of style that we take as a started point- in order to know the different ways of seeing and building the reality in journalistic productions. The secondary objective of this thesis is the validation of the proposal from the application to a sample of texts in order to decipher the strategies and implications that endure the different ways of saying.
After stating the diversity and heterogeneity of style's definitions we need to go to the origins, to look for this concept proceeds, which raises us a multidisciplinary approach, following the research line that, for a few years, is been opening the seams of a usually autarkic communication studies. That explains the need to look over different disciplines that have his center of attention in the verbal expression, like the Rhetoric or the Stylistics. This one, through different schools, ends in a Pragmatics where we place the study of journalistic styles, like concrete communicative achievements.
This search also includes the basic reflection on the most stretched concept from journalistic style and that's why it covers to a discipline with centuries of experience investigating in the limits between language and reality: the philosophy, to defend, in line with critical linguistics, the indissoluble unit of form and content, in front of those who send the style to the picking out area without semantic consequences.
This thesis develops a methodological proposal that starts from a style's concept review in communication studies. From the idea of a plurality of ways of saying and his implications, this thesis broach the conditions that intervene in the communication and reception of journalistic texts, across three key notions: genres, registers -situational variables or circumstances that surround the publication of an article- and styles, which interrelates the previous ones with the author's figure like a configurative instance of a reality that helps to designate and create. This configuration is explicit from a whole series of observable and analyzable linguistic marks, which are described in the analysis' method.
Youthness of the comunicative studies drive us to loan to other disciplines, like Linguistics and Stylistics, tools to an approach to journalistic texts. Also to design a method that could realize the diversity of styles that coexist on the daily printed pages, linking them to the tasks in which the journalist leaves, inevitably, their treads. And, not only to state the plurality of voices that report the current but, above all, to investigate in the cognitive implications that raise the different ways of saying.

Full textNewsworthiness is a relevant journalistic criterion because it connects news (the quintessential journalistic product offered by the media) with their audiences. But the approximations to this criterion are theoretical, and there is no intention of using it as a method of observation. Thus, this dissertation presents a methodological approach to measure and analyze the newsworthiness of a general-interest cyber-newspaper. In addition, there are two main indicators of the interest: the subject of the news and the participation of the users in them, through social networks as Facebook and Twitter and news comments. Methodological approach favored by the digital context. In our research, we consider that the newsworthiness of a general-interest cyber newspaper is defined by the degree of approximation or correspondence (meeting) between the Public Interest and the interest of the public in that cyber newspaper. A cyber-newspaper estimates as Public Interest something that should or could interest to a large sector of society because of its relevance and scope for all citizens, which finally becomes real in the hierarchy of the cyber-newspaper front page, across the first ten news of the left column of the front page. While the interest of the public is understood by this cyber-newspaper as the most interesting information proposed by them to the public, and is represented by a news list of the most read stories by the users of this cyber newspaper. An informative hierarchy of the readers will be provided across the first news. To test our approach, we have studied the proposed approximation to newsworthiness doing a comparative study between the main European general-interest cyber-newspapers of Spain and Italy: ElPaís.com, ElMundo.es, Corrieredellasera.it and LaStampa.it, based on certain criteria and branding diffusion in these European countries. Thus, the main objective of our research is to determine the newsworthiness of the general-interest cyber-newspaper described above. But also to define the agenda-setting and users’ participation in newsworthy news, the newsworthy deficit (the degree of mismatch between the Public Interest and the interest of the public in such newspapers), the Public Interest and the interest of the public. As for the most significant results, one can note that the main general-interest cyber-newspapers of Spain -ElPaís.com and ElMundo.es- and Italy -Corrieredellasera.it and LaStampa.it- have a low newsworthy, being even lower in those of Spain. However, Corrieredellasera.it is the only cyber- newspaper with an intermediate newsworthy. Whereupon, are the users of the Spanish cyber-newspapers the most independent regarding the main informative offer received. On the subject of news, Politics and Economics are the outstanding themes proposed by these online media in its hierarchy of information, while the public is mostly interested in Society and Sports. This divergence of thematic interests could explain a low-interest of these cyber-newspapers newsworthy. In relation to the users’ participation via social networks as Facebook and Twitter and their news comments, users of both countries, Spain and Italy, are more involved in stories that interest them such as those of the newsworthiness and interest of the public. The most active users are those of the Spanish cyber-newspapers, especially those of ElPaís.com. Facebook is the most widely way of participation by users of these online newspaper. Finally, this model of analysis can be a useful methodological tool for media companies because they could know the newsworthiness of a cyber-newspaper accurately. They could analyze its themes, participation of its members and its management, what it may provide them a journalistic benefit, social and economic.

Full textSince the end of the 1950s Spanish society lived through a process of opening-up that influenced the economic and social life of the country. This process, once Franco was dead, culminated in the transition and the implementation of democracy. This transformation had also an effect on the socio-occupational reality of women, a consequence that was the result of both the modifications of the system of production and the changes in law and ideology. Despite the official discourse, since the end of the 1950s, with crisis and the growing industrial development that implied a massive emigration abroad, and an exodus from country to town, along with the gradual incorporation of women to the labor market and the timid process of external openness, the idea that it is important to facilitate girls access to studies so in the future they can have a better job and even a better husband, from a higher social class, begins to spread. In this way, the protagonists from this PhD thesis, those women born in the Third Generation of 20th century (1940-1960), from upper, well-off classes, get access to elementary and secondary school with the Organization of Secondary School Act, into effect on 1953. This law regulates secondary education and, even though it requires girls to learn Housework Education and to pass a final examination that, if failed, prevents them from obtaining the diploma, it lets the presence of women in the classrooms to consolidate. For these women, access to education provided them a set of skills that, once in adulthood, let them decide to give up, not to perpetuate, the traditional model that bound women to private and/or domestic spaces. It also made them want to participate in public spaces; that is, to get a job. Thus, they broke with the model they had lived through and seen at home, a model in which the mother – in most cases – did not work outside home. On the other hand, one must not forget the role that, during those years, was played by journalists. In 1966 the Press and Publications Act (also known as Fraga Law) is enacted. This law was a direct result of the Regime’s need to have a democratizing appearance in order to adapt to the socioeconomic changes of the country. On paper, censorship was eliminated, although in fact the previous control of information was just transferred to the very editors-in-chief of newspapers; prior censorship was still imposed. This same year the Democratic Group of Journalists is formed; and in 1968, the Official School of Journalism of Barcelona is reopened. Did the new social reality that was being configured imply the massive entry of women into the editorial offices of the media? Did those women get access to those media in equal conditions as their male colleagues? Did their presence in sections of the newspapers traditionally encumbered by men increase? Did they have access to positions of responsibility? Did the newspapers with a more progressive editorial line encourage the presence and the role of women in their staff? This doctoral thesis tries to provide answer to these questions throughout a quantitative analysis of both hemerographic sources (informative units signed by women) and interviews to journalist women that exercised this profession during those years.

Full textThe thesis proposed proposed to analyze and select the conceptual and analytical tools that semiotic discipline has been developing in recent decades, to realize a operational semiotic study model on market research , specifically research that studies the construction of brand discourse through the point of sale. It has sought to show how it is possible to perform an operational assessment of each specific element in the formulation of a general assessment of the consistency and effectiveness of the retail`s communication analyzed and the eventual correction of certain unforeseen effects or strident and contradictory elements in global space`s discourse. To achieve this fundamental strategic objective, we have proceeded by progressive stages. The first chapter was at the same time map and territory, because we have dedicated to provide the theoretical framework of our work but also referred to the toolbox from which to make successive concrete analyzes and proposed a general model semiotic study of retail (point of sale). The main interest here is not to argue and fighting stances within the discipline but rather to select all the theoretical contributions that increase the ability to interpret coherence and communicative effectiveness of a commercial space in all areas and levels, not only the description of the figurative and plastics elements but too to identify the deep values that this space conveys . In any case , this main theoretical reference comes from the so-called School of Paris , or even generative semiotics . The second chapter has allowed us to enter the core theme of the thesis work . We made a socio -anthropological overall of consumption society and urban land transformations generated just by the consumption phenomenon . Secondly, we have devoted a special section to the world of marketing and visual merchandising and especially the most interesting concepts that have been developed over the last 15 years in the field of these disciplines. After the tour in these disciplinary areas , we tried to review critically the presence of the semiotic discipline in the study of consumer spaces , with the specific task of retrieving items useful for our subsequent determination of a general methodological analysis model. In a section thereafter we made a diachronic analysis of pure virtual observation ( without any field work), the evolution of a significant section of comercial spaces : the high -end fashion . Finally , in this chapter we have presented the reworking , in the light of any subsequent theoretical work , of three commercial spaces semiotic studies, personally performed in our professional activity in the recent past. In the third and final chapter we have landed on the fundamental objective of the thesis, to develop a general model of analysis, trying to escape the excessive metalinguistic temptations which would have made the model more elegant and rigorous but also barely usable in research practice of industry. In the first section of the chapter we have dealt with the pre- field research , ie the search and study of all materials of Brand`s discourse: advertising, corporate communications, etc. . To approach the retail space with prior knowledge of what a brand wanted to communicate . The model touchs after the joint between two great moments, conceptualy and chronologically chained: the field study of observation, visual documentation and analysis and further desk study on observed and classified material. The core of the model is concerned on the identification and description of all areas and levels to be investigated in the space for understanding the values conveyed . A model especially important section is dedicated to the issue sensory space analysis . In the last section of the model, is introduced to study the trajectories that can be made in space and transform it into a living material, changing, meaningful practices generator . At the end of the section , we have compiled a overall record of commercial space semiotic analysis which summarizes the various issues discussed throughout the chapter, an operation that has a Propp inspiration for providing a framework in which they can hold all commercial organizations that want to analyze . Finally , we wanted to articulate the conclusions of the work in an application of developed model before - as long as possible exhaustive - to an ad hoc chosen case of the universe of fashion . The semiotic study of selected commercial space has demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed model, obtaining good diagnostic results that then we communicated to the company and helped to accelerate one second restyling of those spaces.
