Abstract:
Purpose Demographic data indicate that the millennial generation is entering the workforce and will become an increasingly significant component of the workforce in the near future. The Millennial generation appears to have significant differences in values, attitudes and expectations regarding work than prior generations. The paper seeks to draw attention to one specific area of management practice - delivering negative feedback - and explore how the knowledge may be changing as a new generation of workers enter the workplace. Design/methodology/approach The literature on the millennial generation was reviewed and research undertaken on giving negative feedback to identify issues that are significant with respect to the manner in which managers give negative information to this new generation of workers. Findings To be effective, negative feedback to millennials needs to be consistent and ongoing. The feedback must be perceived by millennials as benefiting them now or in the future. Managers must be assertive enough to make sure the employee understands the concerns, but sensitive to the fact that many millennials have difficulty accepting such feedback. Originality/value To date, there has been little attempt by management researchers to address the organizational implications of the generational shift that is occurring.

Abstract:
This paper explores the limits and possibilities of research in the sociology of generation by taking the ‘thirtysomething’ cohort as a case study. It addresses a number of critical research issues, namely: how does one identify the parameters of a generation? Are there different sorts of generations, and if so how can this fact be established? And how can one deal with the internal diversity of generations, both in terms of their stratification and in the lived experiences of its members? The empirical research for this study was conducted using focus groups, and analysis loosely follows a grounded theory approach. In the paper, I reflect upon how the context of doing research in an ‘entertainment and consumer society’ might affect the research process and its findings. This leads me to conclude that research methods themselves have an historicizing character, and that sociology also has a generational flavour.

Abstract:
One Script, Two Perspectives: Generation Me and The Staging of Really Really is a reflection on the approach, pre-production, rehearsal and post-production phases of the play, Really Really by Paul Downs Colaizzo, which debuted in the Shafer Street Playhouse on February 20, 2015 on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. The cast included Kaelie Ukrop, Adam Valentine, Ethan Malamud, Telos Fuller, Solomon Dixon, Molly Kaufman, and Katie Stoddard. This paper looks at the processes involved with the creation of that piece. Focus is given to the problems and challenges involved with casting, production, rehearsals, post-production and effective directing methods.

Abstract:
Really, Really, by Paul Downs Colaizzo, is loosely based on the 2006 Duke University sexual assault scandal resulting from what proved to be a false accusation of rape made against three members of the men’s lacrosse team. After individually reading the play, Jorge Burmudez and I both arrived at differing opinions of who was the true victim, in turn inspiring this thesis, which is an exploration of two separate productions of the play demonstrating contrasting perspectives/outlooks regarding sex crimes within sports organizations in the university setting. It will describe our process from conceptualization to a post-mortem talking about particular challenges we faced along with feedback from both casts and audience members who saw the shows. Included will also be my experience with pre-production, auditions/casting, rehearsal journals and post-production documentation of my individual directorial processes. In the end, we are researching where the blame lies in the crime detailed in this play.

Liu, Moxian. "Semi-automated mobile television interactive application generation based on XHTML and Java ME." Thesis, Brunel University, 2011. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5074.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile Digital TV (MDTV), the hybrid of Digital Television (DTV) and mobile devices (such as mobile phones), has introduced a new way for people to watch DTV and has brought new opportunities for development in the DTV industry. Nowadays, the development of the next generation MDTV service has progressed in terms of both hardware layers and software, with interactive services/applications becoming one of the future MDTV service trends. However, current MDTV interactive services still lack in terms of attracting the consumers and the service creation and implementation process relies too much on commercial solutions, resulting in most parts of the process being proprietary. In addition, this has increased the technical demands for developers as well as has increased substantially the cost of producing and maintaining MDTV services. In light of the aforementioned situation, the Thesis has contributed to this field, by proposing an innovative MDTV service creation and consumption system based on XHTML and Java ME. On the head-end it introduces a semi-automatic creation mechanism to facilitate a less technical and more efficient interactive service creation process. This enables designers and creative individuals to be actively involved in the MDTV service creation process and to develop interactive-rich MDTV service. On the client-end it employs an open-source software environment as the interactive service MDTV consumption platform, rendering the MDTV service implementation process as less proprietary as possible. Furthermore, the Thesis offers a discussion on the different MDTV interactive application models currently used and based on the proposed software, a novel MDTV service presentation method is further introduced and adopted instead of the Rich Media and ECMAScript based methods. Finally, a series of qualitative testing procedures have been implemented with regards to conducting an essential evaluation on the operability of the proposed software system.

De, Loera Yolanda Stephanie. "Entre Mis Mundos Me Encontre| First-Generation Chicanas/Latinas' Experiences in Higher Education." Thesis, University of Redlands, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13425779.

Full text
Abstract:

Existing research illustrates that although Latinos make up the largest ethnic minority group in the country, Latinos continue to have the lowest college degree attainment rates (Ramirez, 2014). Despite the increasing rates of high school graduation rates, there remains a large educational achievement gap between Latinos and their white and Asian counterparts (Pérez Huber, Malagon, Ramirez, Camargo Gonzalez, Jimenez, & Vélez, 2015). As we see the increase of the Latino population, it is important to highlight the disparities between Latina and Latino students. Although female students over exceed in enrollment and retention numbers across K-12 and higher education over their male counterparts, they continue to graduate and attain degrees at a lower rate (Pérez Huber, Vélez, & Solórzano, 2014).

This study serves to highlight the experiences first-generation Chicanas/Latinas have within higher education, their navigation and negotiation within academia, their personal sectors as that of self-wellness and family, and the barriers they face within higher education and their personal identities. The research used a qualitative counter-narrative case study inquiry approach to interview, observe, and analyze the experiences of first-generation Chicanas/Latinas in higher education. Latino Critical Race (LaCrit) (Solórzano & Yosso, 2001), Chicana Feminist Theory (Moraga & Anzaldúa, 1983; Delgado Bernal & Elenes, 2011), and Critical Consciousness (Freire, 2007) guide the theoretical framework of this study. Therefore, this study will add to the existing literature by conducting counter-narrative testimonios of five muxeres who illustrated their pathways in higher education while maintaining their various identities.

Clements, Alyssa. "Generation Me: Millennial Intercultural Sensitivity and Conflict Management Styles in the Group Setting." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22291.

Full text
Abstract:
The Millennial Generation is a young generation now required to effectively and efficiently navigate the cultural diversity that they encounter in various group settings throughout the United States. Research has examined conflict management styles and intercultural sensitivity, but few studies have investigated these two concepts specifically within the Millennial Generation. The purpose of this study is to fill the gap that exists in the current literature through an examination of the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles within the Millennial Generation in a hypothetical intercultural group setting. The results from 221 participants indicate that positive and negative relationships exist among the dimensions of intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles, Millennials show a preference for conflict management styles that reflect a concern for self, and Millennials report high Interaction Confidence and low Respect for Cultural Difference. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

Linder, Patricia Lynne. "An Analysis of Self-Directed Learning of First-Year, First-Generation College Students." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4529.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the reflective essays of first-year, first-generation college students for evidence of self-directed learning at the conclusion of their first semester at the university. A phenomenological qualitative method was employed and a content analysis rating rubric used to identify and code evidence related to four themes: Self Awareness, Decoding and Pattern Fit, Autonomy/Responsibility, and Academic Success. The study findings indicated that first-year, first-generation college students have the capacity to take ownership of their learning in ways exemplified by self-directed learners. Participants demonstrated deep reflection and metacognition and their essays revealed unexpected student vulnerability as they voiced fears and hopes with a nearly innocent transparency and candor. Study findings also emphasized the importance of a support system that includes coursework designed to facilitate understanding of individual learner characteristics, emphasize strategies to maximize learner efforts that lead to successful outcomes, and empower students to become more self-directed. This study also expands the field of adult education by providing evidence that learner control is a key component of self-direction and is positively correlated to academic success. Ample evidence related to metacognition, self-regulation, and learner control was identified in the essay data.

Ryberg, Ida. "What’s in it for me? : En studie av motivationsfaktorer bakom ideellt arbete hos Generation Y." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för organisation och entreprenörskap (OE), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-49479.

Full text
Abstract:

Stewart, Kate Jennifer. "Kind of singing in me : a critical account of women writers of the Beat generation." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.515072.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a critical account of women writers of the Beat generation. Writers such as Diane di Prima, Hettie Jones, Joanne Kyger, Joyce Johnson, Bonnie Bremser, and Janine Pommy Vega were part of the 1950s Beat literary culture and had social relationships with the more famous male Beat writers such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. To differing degrees the women writers have also been influenced by the aesthetics of the male writers, and since the 1950s their work has been contextualised alongside the men's in literary magazines, anthologies and more recent academic studies. But in such responses the women writers appear overshadowed by the male Beats, as 'minor characters', to quote the title of Joyce Johnson's memoir of the 1950s. The issue of women's 'minority' forms the premise of this thesis, and I introduce the minority debate through reference to the Beat canon and the issue of revisionism in relation to the wider literary canon. I cite theoretical models such as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's 'rhizome' and 'nomadology' to support my argument. In their spatial form and terminology, these models express movement, which is pertinent since physical movement characterises the lifestyles, texts and myths of the Beat writers. Deleuze and Guattari' s theory can also express the destabilising which the notion of the woman writer brings to these images and myths. I argue that instead of proposing women writers as Beat writers we look to their difference. By reading the women's texts in relation to various themes -literary influence, the literary bohemian world of the city, the parental generation, and body, sexuality, and the road - I suggest difference is expressed in their writing. But rather than positing a distinct 'gynocritical' tradition in the terms set out by Elaine Showalter (1979), I highlight the differences between the women writers. By nature of its focus on little known texts and authors, and the critically undeveloped area of Beat literature and culture, this thesis is part literary history, part cultural history, part biography, as well as offering close readings of the texts. The texts discussed in this thesis have not only received little critical attention, they have not been read and contextualised against each other. In this thesis I do so, taking the broad historical and literary overview that women of the Beat generation have not received, as either writers or subjects.
