O'Bagy, Janalee. "The implementation of generators and goal-directed evaluation in Icon." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184491.

Full text
Abstract:
Generators and goal-directed evaluation provide a rich programming paradigm when combined with traditional control structures in an imperative language. Icon is a language whose goal-directed evaluation is integrated with traditional control structures. This integration provides powerful mechanisms for formulating many complex programming operations in concise and natural ways. However, generators, goal-directed evaluation, and related control structures introduce implementation problems that do not exist for languages with only conventional expression evaluation. Abstract:
This dissertation describes a system that constructs efficient, retargetable code generators and optimizers. chop reads nonprocedural descriptions of a computer's instruction set and of a naive code generator for the computer, and it writes an integrated code generator and peephole optimizer for it. The resulting code generators are very efficient because they interpret no tables; they are completely hard-coded. Nor do they build complex data structures to communicate between code generation and optimization phases. Interphase communication is reduced to the point that the code generator's out

Abstract:
A good methodology for simulation experimentation can result in high efficiency in carrying out simulation experiments. To fully support a user to carry out a simulation experiment, a supportive and user friendly simulation experimentation environment is desirable. The program generator which generates the executable programs from a model expressed in a high-level simulation programming language is another important issue in simulation experimentation. Abstract:
Proliferation of computers with varying word sizes has led to increases in software use where random number generation is required. Several techniques have been developed. Criteria of randomness, portability, period, reproducibility, variety, speed, and storage are used to evaluate developed generation methods. The Tausworthe method is the only method to meet the portability requirement, and is chosen to be implemented. A C language implementation is proposed as a possible implementation and test results are presented to confirm the acceptability of the proposed code.<br>Master of Science

One obstacle preventing more engineers from using finite element analysis (FEA) is the difficulty of transferring data between steps in the modeling process. A Fortran computer program, Rosetta.BYU, has been developed to open data paths between finite element preprocessors (mesh generators) and finite element analysis programs, using a custom data structure. It accepts neutral data files, Version 2.0 IGES data files, and Movie.BYU files for input/output. An application of Rosetta is described. Abstract:
Unlike linear Finite State Machines (FSM) such as Linear Feedback Shift Registers (LFSR), the Geffe generator, a nonlinear FSM, hasn't been frequently studied or used in the scenario of digital system testing. Such machines are used as pattern generators for built-in self-test. LFSRs have become widely used in today's integrated circuits since they have a comparatively low hardware overhead. While it is known that a Geffe generator when used as a pattern generator for a built-in self-test, gives improved fault detection, the area overhead is sufficiently high for this not to be a practical app
