Abstract:
The present paper aims at a closer inspection of historical layers of the lexicon of East Caucasian by looking at a small set of lexical forms that are related to the world of concepts for domestic animals. The paper concentrates on these terms also in order to discuss the question to which extent the reconstructability of corresponding forms for Proto-East Caucasian may shed light on some of the economical patterns of the speakers of this language. It will be shown that much of the terminology for domestic animals has to be related to earlier or later loan layers or to innovative processes within the subgroups. The fact that very few of the terms occurring in one of the domains at issue (‘cow’, ‘horse’, ‘donkey’, ‘pig’, ‘sheep’, ‘goat’) can be reconstructed for Proto-East Caucasian is related to the assumption that lexical terms that are strongly related to the praxeological dimension of socioeconomic concepts tend to be rather instable and adaptable over times to changes with respect to these praxeological patterns. The paper also strongly advocates for a closer consideration and isolation of loan layers present in the individual East Caucasian languages prior to any enterprise aiming at the reconstruction of Proto-East Caucasian lexical units.

Abstract:
Objective To assess the level of knowledge, perceptions and usage profile for generic drugs among laypersons. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 278 volunteers (180 women and 98 men, aged 37.1±15.8 years). A questionnaire was drawn up with questions on their use, perceptions and knowledge of generic drugs. Results Most respondents (99.6%) knew that generic drugs exist, but only 48.6% were able to define them correctly, while 78.8% of the respondents had some information about generics. This information was obtained mainly through television (49.3%). In terms of generic drug characteristics, 79.1% stated that they were confident about their efficacy, 74.8% believed that generic drugs have the same effect as branded medications, 88.8% said that generics were priced lower than branded medications, and 80.2% stated that they bought generic drugs because of price. With regard to drugs prescribed by medical practitioners, 17.6% of the participants said that their doctors never prescribed generics and only 7.5% confirmed that their doctors always prescribed generics. Conclusion For the lay public, the sample in this study has sufficient knowledge of generic drugs in terms of definition, efficacy and cost. Consequently, the volunteers interviewed are very likely to use generics. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate that programs should be implemented in order to boost generic drug prescriptions by medical practitioners.

Abstract:
Abstract Since the introduction of imatinib, the management of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has changed considerably. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the mainstay of CML treatment; however, the high financial burden of TKIs can be problematic for both the patients and health care systems. After the emergence of generics, reimbursement policies of many countries have changed, and generics offered an alternative treatment option for CML patients. There are many papers published on the use of generics in CML patients with conflicting results regarding both efficacy and safety. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the current literature on generic imatinib use in CML, and 36 papers were evaluated. Both in vitro and in vivo studies of generic imatinib showed comparable results with branded imatinib in terms of bioequivalence and bioavailability. In most studies, generics were comparable with the original molecule in terms of efficacy and safety, both in newly diagnosed patients and after switching from Gleevec. Some generic studies showed contradictory findings regarding efficacy and toxicity, and these differences can be attributed to some factors including the use of different generics in different countries. Both in hypothetical models and in real life, introduction of generic imatinib caused significant reduction in health care costs. In conclusion, generics are not inferior to original imatinib in terms of efficacy with an acceptable toxicity profile. Notwithstanding the generally favorable efficacy and safety of generics worldwide to date, we most probably still need more time to draw firmer conclusions on the longer-term outcomes of generics.

Abstract:
The generic cubic contributions to the Lagrangian of gravitation theory are considered. Field equations are determined and put in their simplest form. In the framework of Bianchi I cosmological models with a metric which is power-like in time, algebraic equations are obtained and their exact solutions are derived exploiting computer algebra techniques. These solutions are fully discussed. The analysis is, presently, essentially restricted to a space-time dimension equal to four but results obtained here open the way to an analysis in any dimension.

Abstract:
Slurring epithets or slurs like 'Frog' and 'Boche' are derogative terms but it is unclear why they are derogatory. This work discusses several proposals to answer this question. One commonality with the discussed views is that they all hold that derogation has something to do with semantics, broadly with the meaning of slurs. I disagree with this. I go on to introduce generic descriptivism. It is a novel view to handle slurs and it has two distinctive features. First, generic descriptivism holds that the nature of derogation is epistemic. derogation is due to the information which slurs contain. This is specied with the notion of stereotype. I claim that negative and unwarranted stereotypes are responsible for derogation. This information is not semantic. That is, it is to be distinguished from the meaning of slurs. Secondly, the eponymous feature of generic descriptivism is that it holds that the information which slurs contain is generic. I argue that generic beliefs are produced with a psychological mechanism of generalisation. In relation to social kinds, the mechanism can produce xenophobic generalisations and the use of slurs display these negative beliefs. Derogation is due to this negative information which the slurs contain.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to study how television spot and product placement compare in terms of gaining the target audience’s attention, having control over the marketing message and creating credibility for a product or a brand. The context of the study is Finnish television from advertisers’ point of view. Three major theories used are: AIDA, Generic Communications Process and Two-Step Communications. Twelve hypotheses are built based on the theories, the main hypothesis being: “Although a marketing message sent through product placement gains the target audience’s attention better and creates higher credibility for a product or a brand than a television spot, advertisers are keener on sending the marketing message through a television spot than through product placement because they have more control over the message in a television spot and because it historically has a more stable legal position.” Five experts on the field were interviewed to test the hypotheses. In general, the hypotheses were supported.

Abstract:

Geographical indications designate products which have a specific geographical origin, which can either be national, regional or local. The subject is complicated since geographical indications arises a large number of questions There are EC regulations which regulate the protection of geographical indications, but since the field has not yet been exhaustively harmonized, the existence of national rules of protection is therefore still possible, which can lead to trade barriers between the member states. Consequently, one problem consists in whether it may be legitimate to restrict the free movement of goods by article 28 in the EC Treaty by referring to national rules of protection and to what extent such measures may be justified by article 30 or by the Cassis doctrine. An additional question consists in how the line between geographical indications and generic terms is to be established appropriately. Further, geographical indications are exposed to improper use by other dishonest commercial operators and therefore the possibilities of protection against unfair competition and misleading are also discussed in the thesis. Since there are several questions which are unanswered regarding geographical indications, the purpose of this essay is to analyze what kind of intellectual property right geographical indications constitute and how they are protected.

Nomoto, Hiroki. "A General Theory of Bare "Singular" Kind Terms." University of Arizona Linguistics Circle, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/253424.

Full text
Abstract:
Dayal's (2004) theory of kind terms accounts for the definiteness and number marking patterns in kind terms in many languages. Brazilian Portuguese has been claimed to be a counter-example to her theory as it seems to allow bare “singular” kind terms, which are predicted to be impossible according to her theory. However, the empirical status of the relevant data has not been clear so far. This paper presents a new data point from Singlish and confirms the existence of bare “singular” kind terms. A revised theory of kind terms is proposed that accounts for it. The proposed theory puts forth a number system with three basic categories, i.e. singular, plural and general. It is claimed that bare “singular” kind terms are in fact derived from general NPs, which are associated with number-neutral properties. The paper also discusses why bare “singular” kind terms are not perfectly acceptable in Brazilian Portuguese.

Beniwal, Baldev K. "Genetic analysis of long-term selection experiments." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/13973.

Full text
Abstract:
A long-term selection experiment with mice for 38 generations was analysed. Genetic parameters were estimated for lean mass, body weight, litter size and other associated traits using univariate and multivariate REML analyses with an animal model fitting litters as an additional random effect. Different combinations of selected and control lines were analysed. The change in genetic parameters during the course of selection and infinitesimal model assumptions were examined. Three replicates, each having high and low selected lines for lean mass at 10 weeks of age were maintained for 20 generations with unselected controls (P-Lines). This resulted in a divergence of 7 phenotypic standard deviation units (igmap) between the high and low lean mass lines. After 20 generations replicates were crossed and the selection criterion was changed to 10 week body weight (P6-Lines) without maintaining the controls. At generation 38 the selected lines diverged by 23.2g (8.7 igmap) for 10 week body weight. The estimates of heritability (h2) and c2 (common litter variance/phenotypic variance ratio) for lean mass were 0.5 and 0.2 from the univariate REML analyses of both control lines alone and of pooled data of control+ high+ low lines. Estimates of c2 were higher in the high lines and lower in the low lines, controls being intermediate. The estimates of genetic paramters for body weight were similar to the lean mass in the P-lines. Analysis of the selected lines indicated a steady decline in their additive genetic variance (va) during the course of selection for both lean mass and body weight, even though allowance was made in the infinitesimal model for reductions in Va due to inbreeding and linkage disequilibrium. The multivariate REML estimates of h2 and c2 for lean mass and body weight were similar to those from the univariate analyses. The genetic (rg) and phenotypic correlations (rp) between lean mass and body weight were very high (> 0.9) and positive. Lean mass also showed positive correlations (rg and rp) with gonadal fat pad weight, but when gonadal fat pad weight was expressed as a proportion of body weight it showed small negative correlations with lean mass.

Nicol, Elizabeth. "Long-term effects of oestrogenic effluent exposure on wild fish populations." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/10826.

Full text
Abstract:
Freshwater streams in the developed world are becoming increasingly dominated by treated wastewater. Continually discharged into most surface waters, these effluents contain a suite of bioactive man-made chemicals, including steroid and non-steroid oestrogens, which have been found to feminise male fish, skew sex ratios, and cause reproductive failure. However, the consequences of reproductive disruption remain poorly explored at the population level. This thesis was initiated to evaluate how oestrogenic contaminants might influence the population ecology of a common cyprinid, the roach (Rutilus rutilus). An investigation encompassing population structure, multigenerational exposure and the role of additional drivers of fish population dynamics was undertaken to contextualise the effects of oestrogenic effluents on wild fish populations. Population genetic analysis of UK roach found they exhibit moderately high levels of genetic diversity and significant intra-river genetic structure. Genetically differentiated local subpopulations indicate little interbreeding and limited gene flow, consistent with a typical metapopulation that has not been homogenised by restocking. Similarly, my thesis demonstrates no significant relationship between effluent exposure and Ne (effective population size) or genetic diversity of roach populations, albeit a 65% reduction in Ne is possible at highly polluted sites. River stretches contaminated with high levels of effluent can support breeding populations, which recruit successfully with minimal immigration from less contaminated sites. Multigenerational effects of effluent exposure on roach were also evaluated experimentally using reproductive success from breeding adults over three generations. Lifelong exposure to 100% treated effluent resulted in feminised phenotypes (ovarian cavities and intersex condition) in males but no observable effect on females. Additionally, despite gonadal disruption in males and effluent exposure of their mothers, I found no detrimental effect on their ability to compete with control fish. Instead, reproductive success was primarily determined by body size. A novel approach considering additional fish population drivers suggests that genetic diversity and species diversity decline in parallel with an increasing presence of disturbed land, when combined with geographical isolation. In conclusion, group assemblage and genetic structure of fish populations appears multi-causal and cannot be disaggregated, such that a single environmental characteristic can be shown to drive patterns of population success.

A literature review was done to understand how different authors and researchers view collaboration and teamwork. In addition, interviews were conducted with a cross section of members of teams operating globally within General Motors. This thesis builds upon this research and expands on the effect and interplay of the many different variables present in all collaborative efforts. Special emphasis has been placed in understanding team dynamics for globally dispersed teams. Literature analysis and field interview data led us to develop a model of teamwork dynamics. The model contributed to the understanding of variables and feedback mechanisms affecting alignment, interaction and communication, trust, capability, and team results and efficiency. A survey was administered to partially test the model and to validate insights from interview sessions. From this work, we conclude that issues surrounding globally dispersed teams do not differ significantly from those inherent to co-located teams. However, some of these issues especially time, distance and diversity exert a stronger influence on dispersed teams and require different sorts of interventions to build and maintain effectiveness. As far as General Motors is concerned, we conclude that GM is doing the right things when it comes to assembling teams operating globally but the pace at which the entire organization is genuinely committing to change needs to be accelerated.

AbstractIsabelle is a generic theorem prover with a fragment of higher-order logic as a metalogic for defining object logics. Isabelle also provides proof terms. We formalize this metalogic and the language of proof terms in Isabelle/HOL, define an executable (but inefficient) proof term checker and prove its correctness w.r.t. the metalogic. We integrate the proof checker with Isabelle and run it on a range of logics and theories to check the correctness of all the proofs in those theories.

Abstract:
AbstractModelling and reasoning about dynamic memory allocation is one of the well-established strands of theoretical computer science, which is particularly well-known as a source of notorious challenges in semantics, reasoning, and proof theory. We capitalize on recent progress on categorical semantics of full ground store, in terms of a full ground store monad, to build a corresponding semantics of a higher order logic over the corresponding programs. Our main result is a construction of an (intuitionistic) BI-hyperdoctrine, which is arguably the semantic core of higher order logic over local store. Although we have made an extensive use of the existing generic tools, certain principled changes had to be made to enable the desired construction: while the original monad works over total heaps (to disable dangling pointers), our version involves partial heaps (heaplets) to enable compositional reasoning using separating conjunction. Another remarkable feature of our construction is that, in contrast to the existing generic approaches, our BI-algebra does not directly stem from an internal categorical partial commutative monoid.

Abstract:
Real-time simulation of gas turbine engine performance is used in a variety of aerospace applications. For simulation of propulsion system performance in flight-simulators, fidelity requirements become increasingly stringent. Significant improvements in simulation fidelity can be obtained when using thermodynamic models instead of the customary (piece-wise) linear real-time models. However, real-time thermodynamic models require sophisticated methods to efficiently solve the model equations on a real-time basis with sufficient speed. NLR has developed the ‘Turbine Engine Real-Time Simulator’ (TERTS) generic real-time engine simulation environment for full thermodynamic simulation of various gas turbine engine configurations. At NLR’s National Simulator Facility (NSF), research is performed on pilot-in-the-loop simulation of complex aircraft and helicopter configurations such as thrust-vectoring and Integrated Flight Propulsion Control (IFPC) concepts. For this application, high-fidelity real-time gas turbine models are required. TERTS has an efficient method for solving the engine model equations real-time. The system is implemented in Matlab-Simulink®, which offers advantages in terms of control system modeling flexibility. With TERTS, detailed thermodynamic real-time engine models can easily be implemented in NSF providing an excellent means to analyze a variety of engine effects on pilot-in-the-loop aircraft performance. In this paper the TERTS modeling environment will be described including the numerical solutions used to comply with the real-time requirements. A TERTS model of a military afterburning turbofan will be presented including simulation results.

Abstract:
Three versions of a generic horizontal axis wind turbine nacelle model were tested in a wind tunnel. Force and wake velocity measurements were performed at a Reynolds number of 4.2e5 based on the complete length of the nacelle and the spinner. The effect of main body corner shape was examined as well as that of the spinner. It was found that rounded corners can lead to significant reduction in the aerodynamic forces experienced by the nacelle. At the same time, however, smooth curve surfaces cause instabilities in the separation location, which lead to sudden drops in the lift force. In terms of aeroelastic behavior this is an undesirable feature that leads to negative aerodynamic damping and structures prone to galloping.

Abstract:
The presented work models the geometry of Single Point Cutting Tools (SPCTs) with generic profile. Presently few standard shapes of SPCTs defined in terms of projective geometry are being employed while there is a need to design free-form tools to efficiently machine free-form surfaces with few passes and chosen range of cutting angles. To be able to produce SPCT face and flanks with generic shapes through grinding, a comprehensive geometric model of the tool in terms of the varying grinding angles and the ground depths is required which helps design the tool with arbitrarily chosen tool angles. The surface modeling begins with the creation of a tool blank model followed by transformation of unbounded planes to get the cutting tool surfaces. The intersection of these surfaces with the blank gives the complete model of the tool. Having created the geometric model in two generations of generalization, the paper presents the methodology to obtain the conventional tool angles from the generic model. An illustration of the model has been provided showing variation of tool angles along the cutting edge with changing grinding parameters. When the geometric model is not to be related to the grinding parameters, the SPCT can be modeled as a composite NURBS surface which has been presented towards the end of the work.

Abstract:
The generic problem considered is the propagation of vortical waves across junctions between one wave-bearing medium and another. It is assumed that the eigensolutions are known for the corresponding spatially homogeneous problems. The task is how to determine the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves given the amplitude of the incident wave. In general, there may be more than one incident, reflected or transmitted wave. It is shown how this sort of problem may be solved in terms of the homogeneous eigensolutions by drawing an analogy between the junction and a wave-driver. The particular illustrative problem studied is that of a Tollmien-Schlichting wave, propagating along a rigid-walled channel flow, that is incident on a section of the channel where the walls consist of compliant panels. It is shown how the wave system over the compliant panels and the amplitude of the Tollmien-Schlichting wave leaving the compliant section may be determined in terms of the incident wave. The technique developed for this problem is considered to be generic.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a generic integration approach to the design and manufacture of scroll type compressors which are becoming popular and widely used in refrigeration and air conditioners. To design and manufacture scroll compressors, however, is not easy for the reasons that their key parts have complex shapes with involute curves. The authors have developed a design approach that can cope with simultaneous design activities concurrently within one single environment. The approach is implemented by using Pro/ENGINEER and Visual C++ programming. The work presented is focused on the integration of Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) solid modelling, FEM and CAM. With this particular approach a correct and precise solid model can be achieved, which leads to an optimal design in terms of specification adherence, quality, delivery time and cost. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential and applications of the approach for mechanical product design.

Abstract:
Within the framework of the activities and responsibilities of the OECD/NEA/WGAMA group, a modest PIRT-type exercise was initiated to identify and prioritize country-specific safety issues for which it was considered that analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) could bring real benefits in regard to improved safety. Conventional PIRT procedures were followed as far as possible: the problem scope and objectives of the exercise were first defined, and then a panel of experts was assembled to identify and prioritize the safety items of specific concern to the country represented. Collating the information received, it was possible to identify those safety issues which were clearly country-specific in origin, and those which were of generic interest for which a common approach to benchmarking would be justified. Separate lists were compiled for single-phase and multi-phase phenomena. The paper summarizes the procedures undertaken, lists and prioritizes the safety topics identified in the study, and presents the final ranking in terms of generic importance. Also described are perspectives for a first follow-up activity: the promotion of a new validation benchmark activity based on the problem of high-cycle thermal fatigue in mixing tees.

Abstract:
The development of a generic and effective force model for semi-automatic or manual virtual assembly with haptic support is not a trivial task, esp. when the assembly constraints involve complex features of arbitrary shape. The primary challenge lies in a proper formulation of the guidance forces that effectively assist the user in his/her exploration of the virtual environment, from repulsing collisions to attracting proper contact. The secondary difficulty is that of efficient implementation that maintains the standard 1 kHz haptic refresh rate. We propose a purely geometric model for an artificial energy field that favors spatial relations leading to proper assembly, differentiated to obtain forces and torques in a 6 DOF motion. The energy function is expressed in terms of a convolution of shape-dependent affinity fields, precomputed offline separately for each object. We test the effectiveness of the method using familiar peg-in-hole examples. We show that the proposed technique unifies collision detection and precision assembly modes into a single interaction, and provides a generic and automatic constraint model for the so-called virtual fixtures, with no restrictive assumptions on the types of the involved assembly features.

Abstract:
In recent years, mission-oriented approaches have received growing interest in science, technology and innovation (STI) policies against the background of two developments. First, while so-called “horizontal” or “generic” approaches to research, technology and innovation policies have largely been successful in improving the general innovation performance or the rate of innovation, there are perceived limitations in terms of insufficiently addressing the direction of technological change and innovation. Second, “grand societal challenges” emerged on policy agendas, such as climate change, security, food and energy supply or ageing populations, which call for thematic orientation and the targeting of research and innovation efforts. In addition, the apparent success of some mission-oriented initiatives in countries like China, South Korea, and the United States in boosting technological development for purposes of strengthening competitiveness contributed to boosting the interest in targeted and directional government interventions in STI. Against the backdrop of this renewed interest in mission-oriented STI policy, the OECD has addressed the growing importance of this topic and launched a project looking into current experiences with Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP). The present study on MOIP in Austria was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Energy, Mobility, Environment, Innovation and Technologiy (BMK) and comprises the Austrian contributions to this OECD project. The study aims at contributing Austrian experiences to the international debate and to stimulate a national debate on MOIP.

Abstract:
Climate change is a complex subject with terms and definitions that can seem overwhelming to non-specialists. What is ‘albedo’? What does ‘radiative forcing’ mean? What does ‘geoengineering’ entail? As climate change impacts grow more frequent and intense, it is critical that journalists, in particular, are equipped with the right information when they report. This set of open-access multilingual glossaries aim to bridge the gap between research and the general public by compiling this comprehensive list of most frequently-used terms related to climate change. A majority of these terms have been sourced from the different IPCC reports as well as public platforms such as the BBC and the Climate Reality Project.

Abstract:
We introduce a quantum neural network, QNN, that can represent labeled data, classical or quantum, and be trained by supervised learning. The quantum circuit consists of a sequence of parameter dependent unitary transformations which acts on an input quantum state. For binary classification a single Pauli operator is measured on a designated readout qubit. The measured output is the quantum neural network’s predictor of the binary label of the input state. We show through classical simulation that parameters can be found that allow the QNN to learn to correctly distinguish the two data sets. We then discuss presenting the data as quantum superpositions of computational basis states corresponding to different label values. Here we show through simulation that learning is possible. We consider using our QNN to learn the label of a general quantum state. By example we show that this can be done. Our work is exploratory and relies on the classical simulation of small quantum systems. The QNN proposed here was designed with near-term quantum processors in mind. Therefore it will be possible to run this QNN on a near term gate model quantum computer where its power can be explored beyond what can be explored with simulation.
