Abstract:
To build on the research of strategic management we conducted an empirical study in the context of international performance. Three principal strategies, according to Porters generic strategy theory: cost leadership cost-focus and differentiation respectively, were tested in our research model. Quantitative empirical analysis of international strategy on a sample of 58 Chinese firms was conducted to determine strategies that lead to enhanced strategic performance. We utilized survey strategy encompassing questionnaire data collection. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS statistical package. Inference statistics consisting of correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. Findings of the study suggest that cost leadership and differentiation strategies impact strategic performance significantly, whereas cost-focus does not. A value of appropriate international business strategy is illustrated by supporting a relationship between strategy and international performance. The originality of contributions of the study lies in the fact that the generic business strategies’ impact on strategic performance is tested on an international market on the sample of Chinese firms. These notions enrich existing body of knowledge on strategic management. Therefore, companies conducting their business operations internationally should consider forming and implementing strategies of differentiation and cost leadership to achieve optimal business results.

Production processes have moved beyond mass production to more customized approaches. Global mass customization moves beyond Woodwards models of production to create business models that allow customers to get what they want, although not quite when they want it. This paper explores Woodwards approaches to production processes, extends mass production to include global mass customization and discusses the process as it supports generic and global strategies.

Abstract:
This article explores the topicality of Porter’s generic strategies, assessing about their applicability on two specific automotive industry projects: The Smart and the New Beetle. After performing a documentation analysis on these two projects, it was concluded that both of them may be considered avoidable strategic mistakes as they show the risks of higher differentiation that is not being paid by the customer, no matter how if it is about recognized brands or icon products. Hazards and risks, like big losses and negative margins, are applicable to every firm. This is a qualitative investigation with a not experimental and transversal research design.

Abstract:
This study evaluated knowledge and use of generic drugs in a population-based sample of adults from a southern Brazilian city. The outcomes were: the proportion of generics in total medicines used; theoretical and practical knowledge about generics; and strategies used to buy medicines on medical prescriptions. The recall period for drug utilization was 15 days. The proportion of generics in total medicines was 3.9%. While 86.0% knew that generics cost less and 70.0% that the quality is similar to brand name medicines, only 57.0% knew any packaging characteristics that distinguish generics from other medicines. The highest proportion of generic drug utilization was in the antimicrobial pharmacological group. A brand name medicine (with a brand similar to the generic name) was mistakenly classified as a generic through photos by 48.0% of the interviewees. Among subjects who bought medicines in the 15-day period, 18.9% reported buying a generic, but this result should be interpreted with caution, because the population frequently fails to differentiate between generics and other medicines.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore strategy-specific competencies with regard to intangibles and provides empirical evidence of intangible-based strategy groups for Russian companies. Additionally, the study examines the link between intangible-based strategy and company performance. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses strategic group theory and the resource-based view framework to identify similar strategic behaviour of companies by employment of intangibles. In line with the intellectual capital concept, the study provides a cluster analysis that considers four types of intangibles: human, relational, innovation and process capital. These are measured through publicly available data using principal component analysis. The empirical part of the study uses a database of 1,096 Russian public companies, which covers the period 2004–2014. Findings As a result, the study reveals three profiles of strategic behaviour with regard to intangibles. The majority of Russian public companies (63.5 per cent) are Generics and pursue a non-intensive intangible strategy. Only 13.3 per cent of companies constitute the intangible-intensive profile by having endowment of all intellectual resources higher than the sample average. The remaining companies (23.2 per cent) also pursue an intangible-intensive strategy with a focus on innovation capital. Intangible-intensive strategic groups outperform Generics. Originality/value The study proposes a novel intangible-based strategy continuum, which straddles two polar strategies: generic and smart. The study introduces insights to better understand the differences in performance across intangible-intensive strategies and presents a new empirical inquiry into strategic behaviour with regard to intangibles in Russia.

Is the strategy approach of focusing on either cost leadership or differentiation still relevant? The article discusses Porter´s approach with reference to hybrid strategies. These solve the contradiction of cost leadership versus differentiation. An additional approach based on classical marginal analysis is introduced. Again, the original idea of a polarization is called into question. AbstractThe paper reports research within Australian manufacturing companies that investigated the perceived importance and interrelationships of functional and business strategies. Seven functional strategies were postulated (operations, research and development, technology, marketing, human resources, organisational, and financial). Porter's (1980) generic strategies were used to define business strategies because of their ability to simplify complex strategic patterns and because of their popularity in the strategic management literature (Miller and Dess, 1993). The research found that Australian manufacturers operations strategy was the most preferred and effective functional strategy. Australian manufacturers also have a preference for combined generic strategies. However, an analysis of performance suggests that the adoption of a single generic strategy may be preferable.

The Diploma thesis is focused on internal and external analysis of the company Autoseating. In the first, teoretical, part of the thesis are explained the basic therms as a strategy,a mission and a vision follower by the external Pest and Porter 5 forces analyses. Author continued with an internal analysis represented by resource analysis and financial analysis. At the end of teoretical part were explained swot analysis together with choice of generic strategies made by porter. Practical part fullfiled all the analyses mentioned. Pest analysis was made as a first one, with no breaking news. But porter analysis of 5 forces disclosed endangering by suppliers in a case of import-branch in Autoseating, an endangering by customers in the case of car-parts production, an finally big endangering by e-shops for shop "Prodejna Honzik". The majority contribution brought an internal analysis, particulary the financial one. There were suggested better usage of capital and to take measures to improve stock-turn. Final swot analysis confirmed facts found in Porters model of 5 forces (competition analysis). The company Autoseating deals with the high quality products, so the author decided to recommend diferenciation strategy and added some measures to improve contemporary system.

Abstract:
This is the first extensive comparative study that systematically illustrates how Galen tailors his rhetorical strategies according to the genre of literature he is using. This study is part of a growing body of literature which attempts to address the over-arching question posed by Prof. van der Eijk in Toward a Rhetoric of Ancient Scientific Discourse-'How was scientific knowledge expressed and communicated in the ancient world?'. The particular aim of this study is to provide insight into the interrelationship between scientific knowledge, genre and rhetoric in the Galenic Corpus. To illustrate this, six Galenic texts were selected as exemplars of different types of scientific communication: protreptic, prolegomena, medical commentary, isagogic text, thesis and scientific treatise. Each exemplar is systematically analysed in respect to its understood objective, participants (author/audience), structure, language, level of explanation and the kinds of proofs used. This analysis is informed both by modern linguistic theory as well as by ancient definitions and practices of the aforementioned types of discourse. The format of this study lends itself to drawing comparisons between the aforementioned texts. This study illustrates how Galen is a skilled communicator who adjusts his authorial posture, arguments and stylistic register to a broad range of communicative situations and audiences.

Abstract:
This study’s objective is to test of Porter’s, Mintzberg’s and Miles & Snow’s strategic typologies in the pharmaceutical industries that operate in Brazil, detaching the explanatory capability versus parsimony classic trade-off in its capacity to describe these typologies. A bibliographical revision was made including strategies, environment and performance, using a database with information about the largest fifty pharmaceutical industries operating in Brazil based on invoicing criteria. Ten strategic variables and seven performance variables had been extracted from this database. These variables had been evaluated using statistical procedures as cluster analysis and MANOVA, in order to allow the identification of strategic groups according to the typologies being studied. Finally, the strategic groups average performances were compared to the respective theoretical models expected results. The three tested typologies showed distinct descriptive capabilities. Porter’s typology demonstrated greater tack to the pharmaceutical industries operating in Brazil. The parsimony won the explanatory capability in this market in deep transformation.

Abstract:
Recent years have seen an increase in the adoption of geometric tolerances. Often it is possible to find several geometric tolerances defined on a single part. However, this poses inspection issues: the values of the geometric errors may be interrelated; therefore, the presence of multiple tolerances should be considered in inspection design. In this work, a methodology is proposed for planning optimal CMM sampling strategies for multiple tolerances based on the minimization of inspection costs. A model for inspection costs is proposed, which takes into account the influence of the inspection strategy on the measurement and inspection errors costs. The inspection strategy minimizing inspection cost can then be defined. The approach can be adopted both to optimize generic, uniform, sampling strategies, and to generate manufacturing specific strategies, which consider the manufacturing signature. A case study which illustrates the methodology is presented.

Abstract:
A very large majority of the current product development process models put forward in textbooks present a homogenous structure, what Ulrich & Eppinger [1] call the market-pull model, presented as a generic one, while other possible product development process models are merely seen as variants. This paper focuses on the task clarification and derived activities (mainly the systematic search for customer needs through market study and the supplementary development costs it entails) and investigates two alternative strategies that are not derived from the generic process model. The first alternative is the market-pull model without an extensive task clarification. The second is the application of the so-called expeditionary marketing strategy. With the help of simplified analytic modeling, the conditions for which these alternatives are as efficient as the generic process model are discussed. This advocates the development of more flexible process models.

Abstract:
A generic training simulator of a natural gas combined cycle was modified to match operations at a real plant. The objective was to use the simulator to analyze cycling operations of the plant. Initial operation of the simulator revealed the potential for saturation conditions in the final high pressure superheater as the attemperator tried to control temperature at the superheater outlet during gas turbine loading and unloading. Subsequent plant operational data confirmed simulation results. Multiple simulations were performed during loading and unloading of the gas turbine to determine operational strategies that prevented saturation and increased the approach to saturation temperature. The solutions included changes to the attemperator temperature control setpoints and strategic control of the steam turbine inlet pressure control valve.

Abstract:
Life cycle management of RPV heads is a significant issue for utilities with PWR plants. Experience has shown the potential for primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of the Alloy 600 CRDM nozzles and/or Alloy 182 J-groove welds which can lead to leaks if allowed to propagate. Non-destructive examinations to detect the PWSCC at an early stage are expensive and potentially time consuming while failure to perform timely inspections can lead to leaks, boric acid corrosion, and the possible need to perform repairs during outages when no provisions have been made for inspections or repairs. Decisions regarding the optimum long term strategic plan can be made based on economic modeling of alternative strategies in combination with probabilistic risk modeling based on plant-specific and industry generic inspection results. This paper describes the key factors in developing a strategic plan that takes into account planned costs, potential repair costs, costs of lost production, and other consequential costs, while ensuring safety. Modeling tools discussed include welding residual stress analyses, fracture mechanics calculations, crack initiation and growth modeling, and probabilistic Monte Carlo simulation.
