Social policy scholars disagree about which factors best predict U.S. welfare state generosity. We argue that this disagreement is an artifact of study designs. Researchers usually study either the totality of a state’s social expenditures or one specific program. These approaches overlook the fact that individual social programs were born of different circumstances and serve different constituencies. Comparing state-level policies for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), our fi

Zakat has a strong legal foundation in Islam and holds the potential to serve as both a da'wah instrument and an effective generosity strategy in driving social change. However, in practice, zakat management still faces various challenges, such as low public awareness in fulfilling zakat obligations and inefficient distribution. This study aims to analyze the role of zakat as a da'wah instrument from an Islamic perspective and evaluate the implementation of zakat generosity strategies in promoting social change. The research employs a normative approach with a literature review methodology, en

Mutually beneficial interactions often require trust that others will reciprocate. Such interpersonal trust is foundational to evolutionarily unique aspects of human social behaviour, such as economic exchange. In adults, interpersonal trust is often assessed using the ‘trust game’, in which a lender invests resources in a trustee who may or may not repay the loan. This game captures two crucial elements of economic exchange: the potential for greater mutual benefits by trusting in others, and the moral hazard that others may betray that trust. While adults across cultures can trust others, li

Before the advent of Islam, trade was the primary occupation of the people in Makkah. However, their commercial dealings often lacked ethical principles, leading to widespread exploitation. Deception, fraud, misrepresentation, and adulteration were common practices, resulting in economic injustices and fueling tribal and familial conflicts. In such circumstances, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ introduced significant economic reforms, declaring all forms of trade unlawful that involved individual or collective harm. The paper analyzes the impact of the Cuban Missile crisis on today’s US-Cuban relations. Of course, the scale and historical significance of this event is so great that it simply could not have failed to leave its mark and to affect the further development of the conflict between the United States and Cuba. However, with a more explicit focus, the impact of the 1962 Missile crisis is reflected not in those aspects that are conventionally talked about, but in more fundamental (albeit short-lived) manifestations. This thesis consists of three papers studying the economic implications of non-standard preferences on religious giving, alternative banking, and optimal taxation. The first paper (Chapter 2) compares a type of religious giving from the rich to the poor with other fiscal policies in terms of economic aggregates and social welfare. The second paper (Chapter 3) aims to answer under what conditions an alternative banking system would arise and what are the growth and welfare implications of these systems. Abstract:
This chapter begins by detailing the major aspects of the virtue ethics tradition, particularly as they are understood by Aristotle. I then turn to Wendell Berry’s thought and argue that Berry embodies well many of the facets of this tradition. I consider three virtues in Berry’s thought: humility, generosity, and love. I reveal that by taking these virtues seriously, Berry offers to the agricultural community a more sustainable path forward for agriculture. Berry’s advocacy of virtues in agriculture offers a wisdom to researchers and practitioners alike which, I argue, can ameliorate many pre
