This study focuses on improving business planning by proposing a series of artificial intelligence techniques to facilitate the integration of decision support systems and expert system paradigms. The continued evolution of the national information infrastructure, open systems interconnectivity, and electronic data interchange lends toward the future plausibility of the inclusion of a back-end genetic algorithm approach. This thesis analyses the social dimensions of the risk of animal biopharming (the genetic modification of animals to produce pharmaceuticals) in New Zealand, in the context of a wider discussion of the social nature of risk. In doing so, it offers a different conception of risk and risk assessment than is currently used within the government policy of New Zealand. Current policy has focused on technical evaluations of risk, in which the technology being analysed is not assessed within the social context it will enter and risk is compartmentalised into quantifiable and standardised data.

The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate psychological and behavioral effects of receiving cancer genetic counseling for breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer and/or with a family history of these cancer types and to determine whether counselees’ informational needs were met. Study I was performed 3-7 years post-counseling. Participants (n=214) reported a relatively high level of anxiety but a low level of depression compared to cancer patients in general. This thesis analyses the struggle over rights to benefits and ownership of plant genetic resources and the global regime complex on the management of plant genetic resources, and how different regimes concerning these resources cooperate or stand in opposition to each other. Because of changes in US patent law and the establishment of TRIPS, patent claims over plant genetic resources has increased dramatically globally.
