Abstract:
A number of authors have argued that redundancy in biological organisms contributes to their evolvability. We investigate this hypothesis via the experimental manipulation of genetic redundancy in evolving populations of simulated robots controlled by artificial neural networks. A genetic algorithm is used to simulate the evolution of robots with the ability to perform a previously studied task. Redundancy is measured using systematic lesioning. In our experiments, populations of robots with larger genotypes achieve systematically higher fitness than populations whose genotypes are smaller. It

Abstract Genetic redundancy refers to a situation where an individual with a loss-of-function mutation in one gene (single mutant) does not show an apparent phenotype until one or more paralogs are also knocked out (double/higher-order mutant). Previous studies have identified some characteristics common among redundant gene pairs, but a predictive model of genetic redundancy incorporating a wide variety of features derived from accumulating omics and mutant phenotype data is yet to be established. In addition, the relative importance of these features for genetic redundancy remains largely un

Abstract:
The genetic programming (GP) evolutionary process typically introduces a large amount of redundancy and unnecessary complexity into evolved programs. Quick growth of redundant and functionally useless sections of programs can quickly overcome a GP system, exhausting system resources and causing premature termination of the system before an acceptable solution can be found. Rather than implicitly controlling the redundancy and code growth/bloat as in most of the existing approaches, this paper investigates an algebraic simplification algorithm for explicitly removing the redundancy from the gen

Abstract:
A new representation combining redundancy and implicit fitness constraints is introduced that performs better than a simple genetic algorithm (GA) and a structured GA in experiments. The implicit redundant representation (IRR) consists of a string that is over-specified, allowing for sections of the string to remain inactive during function evaluation. The representation does not require the user to prespecify the number of parameters to evaluate or the location of these parameters within the string. This information is obtained implicitly by the fitness function during the GA operations. The

The diversity and the drivers of diversity for below ground invertebrates including Collembola (springtails) are relatively unknown in the Namib Desert. This paper evaluates the effect of the addition of kinematic redundancy in the energy efficiency of parallel manipulators.
