The best-studied antimicrobial compounds are bacteriocins, i.e. ribosomally synthesized peptides. Most of these peptides have a narrow spectrum of activity and are usually only active against bacteria from the same ecological niche. The fact that all bacteriocins are degraded by proteolytic enzymes enlarges their potential use as natural food preservatives. The ideal would b

This process is called interference and is mediated by CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins. Det må skje på en nøye regulert måte slik at alle delfunksjoner blir kvantitativt tilpasset hverandre. Nevertheless, some of the characteristics regarding how bacteria organize their chromosomes are relatively conserved, suggesting that they might be both ancient and important, and that selective pressures inhibit their modification. This thesis aims to study some of these characteristics experimentally, assessing how changes affect bacterial growth, and how, after changing conserved features, bacteria might evolve. Membrane proteins represent a subset of proteins embedded in or associated with the biological membrane. Despite accounting for 30% of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic proteomes and over 50% of current therapeutic targets, the structural and functional studies of membrane proteins still largely lag behind their soluble counterparts. This is predominantly due to the challenges in the isolation and purification of these proteins from their native mmembrane environment. Using the enhancement of fluorescence as a method of determining whether a sample contains spores shows great potential because DPA is not found in most powders that do not contain spores.
