Abstract:
We are currently living in an artificial, increasingly complex created system of discourse heavily base on socially constructed systems of language and digital technologies. How we use these technologies to advance the human condition in terms of our very existence makes us inherently cyborg in nature. With the increase in digital technologies in every aspect of day –to-day existence from your morning coffee to higher education, we have become increasingly dependent on our cyborg identities. This thesis, then, serves as a project that looks to understand how we have come to this point and to what extent our newly found cyborg identities can serve as the catalyst for progress particularly in education and the further production and transmission of human knowledge.

Gardner, Bruce Knight. "The Genesis calendar : the synchronistic tradition in Genesis 11." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.322470.

Full text
Abstract:
Six related problems in calendrical study are addressed. In Chapter 2, the West, inheritor of Rome, is seen as solar-calendrical, unfamiliar with Hebrew calendrics apart from the Church's specialised use of a luni-solar calendar for Paschal calculations. Ancient calendars were usually lunar-based, although most periodically synchronised with the seasons (luni-solar). These models are reviewed. In Chapter 3, ANE and Mediterranean calendars show improved international astronomy - historically, the province of priestly astronomers. Yet, in Chapter 4, the third problem is that Mishnaic and Talmudic evidence speaks of strict observance of New Moons and <I>ad hoc</I> intercalation. If mathematical schemes for the lunar month were in operation in the Hebrews' <I>milieu</I> by 380 BCE, why were they so far behind in rabbinical times? The solution is: they deliberately chose to rely on observation. This cannot exclude an earlier, more mathematical tradition (Segal, 1957). The fourth problem, in Chapter 5, is the 364-day solar calendar, associated with Jaubert (1953, 1957), supported by VanderKam (1979), and Davies (1983). By acknowledging the comparative calendrical realism in the <I>Mishmarot</I>, luni-solar and solar evidence is examined in the Primeval History where Creation and Flood evince synchronistic ideas. The fifth problem, in Chapter 6, is the 'Key of Enoch', the idea that Enoch's full age in Gen 5:23 represents 365<I> days</I>. It is shown that <I>Gen 11:10-26 contains a synchronistic calendar of 6 years and 84 years, </I>similar to that hypothesised by Glessmer (1996) for the <I>'Otot</I>. This covert scheme is called Genesis 11 Synchronistic Calendar. The sixth problem, in Chapter 7, is the pre-history of <I>Qumran's</I> synchronistic calendars, which the Genesis calendar illuminates. A failure to recognised the <I>covert calendrical genre</I> was caused by unfamiliarity with ancient calendrics, and a traditional reading of P's genealogies.

Briggs, Barbara. "Kinetics in aqueous and microhetero-geneous systems." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/34028.

Full text
Abstract:
Rate constants for chemical reactions in various aqueous and micro- heterogeneous systems have been measured and analysed. A large part of the thesis is concerned with interpreting kinetic trends in two water-in-oil microemulsions. Kinetic data for inorganic reactions involving low-spin iron (II) di-imine oorplexes and for reactions involving the organic substrates, 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene, crystal violet and malachite green in microemulsions have been collected and used to identify different structural zones in these solvent systems. The kinetic data are interpreted in terms of a model in which reaction occurs at an interfuse. Reactions involving cis-bis(pyridine)tetracarbonylmolybdenum (0) in oil- in-water, water-in-oil microemulsions and organic solvent mixtures have been studied. Aquation reactions of iron (II) hexadentate Schiff base have been used to identify microheterogeneous phases in water-rich '2-butoxyethanol + water' mixtures. Solvent effects on initial and transition states are discussed for reactions of iron (II) glyoxal bis-N methylamine with hydroxide ions in 'methanol + water' mixtures and reactions of iron(II) 1,10-phenan- throline with hydroxide ions in 'isopropanol + water' mixtures. Transfer chemical potentials for single ions, in 'acetone + water' mixtures, have been estimated, using solubility data for salts in conjunction with the assumption that transfer chemical potentials for tetraphenylboronate and tetraphenylarsonium ions are equal. Effects of added salt on the neutral hydrolysis of phenyldichloro- acetate in aqueous solutions are examined in terms of solvent cosphere interactions between ions. The temperature dependence of rate constants for reactions of iron (II) 4-methyl, 1,10-phenanthroline have been examined. The results are discussed in terms of isobaric, isothermal and isochoric activation parameters. The meaning of the term 'isochoric' is clarified in this context.

Abstract:

Walton, Kevin Anthony. "The presence and absence of God in the Jacob narrative." Thesis, Durham University, 1998. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5003/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the theological complexity of the Jacob narrative. In particular this is centred upon the paradox of divine presence and absence, and the contrast of the human and the divine. In the first part, an investigation is made of three key episodes which contain an encounter with the divine: the opening oracle (25:19ff), Bethel (28:10-22) and Peniel (32:23-33). It is concluded that the first passage is constructed as an introduction, making explicit the theme of the presence of God in the Jacob story, but also introducing the human side of the paradox. Bethel and Peniel are based on older pre-Yahwistic traditions, now shaped and incorporated into the story of Jacob to throw a theological perspective over the wider plot. The second part consists of a reading of the wider Jacob story, with particular attention to the theme of divine presence and absence and the interaction of the human and the divine. It is argued that even the most human of stories betray a theological interest and contribute to the overall paradox, but also that there are several indications of the presence of God. In the conclusion, it is noted that behind the present unity of the Jacob story there is evidence of earlier traditions, a growing together of material, and supplements offering new perspectives. It is also concluded that a close reading of the final text and a historical-critical appreciation need not be mutually exclusive, and that a cautious use of critical insights has thrown light upon the final form. Finally, it is argued that the theme of the presence and absence of God offers a way of reading the Jacob story in a theological way, that does most justice to its historical depth, final form, and canonical status.

One of the modules in GENESIS uses about 1000 lines of Java code representing 31 rules to turn English sentences into a variety of more meaningful semantic representations. I reproduced the functionality of these rules by training the existing rule-learning program UNDERSTAND with 43 human-readable examples of English sentences and corresponding semantic representations, resulting in 18 rules. These new rules and the framework for training and using them provides GENESIS with a more robust and extensible semantic parser. This research also led me to make several improvements to UNDERSTAND, making it both more powerful and easier to train.<br>by Harold Blake Cooper.<br>M.Eng.

Abstract:
The main focus in this thesis is the understanding of Genesis 12: 1- 13: 4 and its development in the Genesis Apocryphon, one of the re-written Bible text, dealt with in this dissertation. Reading the Genesis Apocryphon, it draws your attention to firstly find out why, and secondly, to see how the author/s of this scroll re-wrote the above-mentioned passage in Genesis. The focus of the Genesis account is particularly on Abram leaving the Promised Land of Egypt, and consequently, what may be regarded as his ill behaviour towards Sarai, his wife, while they were in Egypt. Abraham's leave-taking of the Promised Land, and his behaviour towards his wife are unexpected, for Abram had followed God's calling, and had been promised Canaan for his and Sarai's offspring, However interfers, and lead Abram back on his steps.

Pentatomidae has 7000 species in 15 families, of which Pentatomidae is the largest, with 4500 species and 760 genera, although in the state of São Paulo only 163 species are present. The Coreoidae superfamily consists of five families, however only Coreidae, Rophalidae and Alydidae are present in the Neotropics. The Coreidae family has 1884 species, divided into four subfamilies, of which Coreinae has eight tribes with representatives in Brazil. Although Pentatomidae and Coreidae families have a significant role as pests of agricultural crops, the cladistic analysis involving these taxa are scarce, which results in the absence of a single hypothesis classification, making research on phylogenetic systematic approaches necessary for these families. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the phylogenetic relationships of Pentatomidae families and subfamilies through the 16S, ND5, 18S and 28S genes and Coreidae family and their respective Coreinae subfamily through the 18S and 28S genes. We aimed also to confirm the current classification of tribes and subfamilies of Pentatomidae and Coreidae, which is grounded on morphological characters, as well as to evaluate the genetic variability of the sequences corresponding to the mitochondrial and nuclear genes analyzed. From the results it was observed that the nuclear genes are conserved while the mitochondrial are highly variable and tend to AT base. Our study showed that nuclear genes 18S and 28S are not ideal for phylogenetic resolution at the level of families, subfamilies and tribes of Coreidae and Pentatomidae, because the supports of the branches do not allow that there is confiability in the analysis. Furthermore, groups considered monophyletic, based on morphological characteristics, such as Pentatomidae subfamilies, have not had their monophyly rescued. But when we consider the topologies obtained with nuclear genes combined with mitochondrial genes for the Pentatomidae family, we had high support in the branches, and thus high confiability in the analysis, rescuing the monophyly of most of the studied tribes. Thus, studies using different molecular markers, in particular mitochondrial genes are needed, because they can help in understanding and support of the current classification of intra-family relations Pentatomidae and Coreidae that remain pending.

Abstract:
This paper is a comparison of narrative in Genesis and Midrash Genesis Rabbah, using as a sample each text's version of the story of Cain and Abel. The paper begins with a survey of the study of Bible as literature and Midrash as literature, examining the work of Robert Alter, Meir Sternberg, Wesley A. Kort, Isaak Heinemann, Ofra Meir, David Stern and Jacob Neusner. Following this is a close reading and poetic analysis of the two primary texts, then a summary and comparison of narrative conventions and techniques. Narrative is examined according to the considerations of plot, character, narration and meaning. Further conclusions are drawn regarding the different portrayal of God in biblical and midrashic discourse, attitudes toward paradox and ambiguity, and strategies for achieving ideological and rhetorical goals.

Galarza, Ballester Mª Teresa. "Antiguan Creole: Genesis and Variation." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de València, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/77724.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates Antiguan Creole (AC), including its socio-history and sociolinguistics. Besides, it is concerned with the central strands of research in creolistics: the diachronic that focuses on creole genesis and creole development, and the synchronic that emphasizes the status of creoles as linguistic systems in their own right. The research has been organized in three parts. The first part is preparatory and concerns theoretical and methodological issues. It begins with a review of the literature concerning creole genesis and the creole continuum and examines the hypotheses to be tested. Next, it is concerned with research techniques and presents the fieldwork methods employed. The second part considers the following areas: the language and its context. It outlines the historical circumstances that led to the emergence of AC and then turns to the sociolinguistic situation of present-day Antigua. Subsequently, it offers a phonological and grammatical description of AC. The third part deals with the linguistic analyses that have been applied in order to test the hypotheses. This part provides a linguistic analysis of three linguistic features of AC that have been soundly investigated in other creole languages: palatal gliding after velars, copula system and its variability, and preverbal markers and past-marking by verb inflection. Firstly, to examine palatal gliding, the study begins with a historical account and then offers a synchronic description of the variable use of the palatal/stop glide complex. Secondly, copular and attributive predication is investigated from a historical perspective followed by a synchronic analysis of copula variability in present affirmative contexts. Thirdly, the research looks at the origin of the system encoding tense, mood and aspect and gives a synchronic analysis of the variable use of past inflection. Finally, the thesis is concluded by relating the findings of the previous chapters to issues concerning creole genesis on the one hand, and issues describing the speech community and the validity of the creole continuum model on the other.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the early poetry of Clough, written between 1830 and 1841, in the light of the information about his personal and intellectual life provided by published and unpublished manuscripts, essays, letters and diaries. More specifically, it sets out to determine the degree to which the seeds (thematic and formal) of Clough’s more mature work can be discerned in the earlier. Chapter One discusses the influence of Clough’s childhood reading, and particularly the heroic ideal as encouraged by his mother. It traces the way this developed, particularly under the historical ideas of Thomas Arnold and the Liberal Anglicans, and the fatalistic moral problems this created. Chapter Three considers Clough’s responses to the Oxford Movement. It teases out those elements that attracted Clough and those he came to reject, particularly in the light of Tractarian ideas about reserve, in relation to poetry, truth and personal behaviour. Chapters Two and Four provide chronological, text-by-text accounts of the Rugby and Balliol poems respectively, offering judgments about influences, dates and sources, and interpretations in the light of Chapters One and Three respectively. Chapter Two argues that much of the Rugby poetry reflects an escapist lament for the past and a failure of will to restore it. Chapter Three argues that Clough’s engagement with Tractarian ideas about reserved truth provides the key context for many of these poems. Chapter Five traces the way in which Clough’s early poetics, derived from Wordsworth via Thomas Arnold, were gradually replaced by his more mature, ambiguous approach which also emerged from his encounters with Tractarian reserve. Two appendices collect ten poems and poetic fragments omitted from Mulhauser’s standard edition; three additional variant texts for poems included by Mulhauser; and four previously unpublished letters to Clough from his friend WilliamTylden.

Mohr, Sascha Janina. "Costly signaling and generous behavior." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6278.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the use of generous behaviour as a costly signal to convey information about an unobservable social characteristic to other individuals in one's social environment. Building on recent contributions in this spirit, I develop a theoretical framework that contrasts signaling activities without social benefits with activities that benefit the observers in situations in which individuals compete for access to a scarce social good. The objective of the first part of the thesis is to characterize the possible separating equilibria in each case. While one obtains a multiplicity of equilibria when the agents employ neutral signals to convey information, one can make a unique prediction with respect to the individuals' equilibrium behaviour if they use beneficial signaling activities, the agents are of two discrete types, behave symmetrically within their respective types, and the observers of the signals adopt non-decreasing beliefs vis-à-vis the signalers' relative quality. In view of their sharp divergence, the second part of the thesis investigates experimentally the precision of these predictions. The results provide support for many elements of the theory. Among others, the behaviour of individuals in the treatments with beneficent signals is much more closely in line with the theoretical predictions than expected given the complexity of their behavioural implications, especially when it comes to the similarity of the participants' behaviour within them. Behaviour in the treatment with neutral signals, in turn, is consistent with multiple equilibria. The final part of the thesis explores what kind of signaling activity individuals trying to communicate their intentions to potential interaction partners will use in various social settings if given a choice. To this end, the framework developed in the first part is extended to allow the signalers to choose endogenously a signal from a “menu” of signaling activities rather than exogenously prescribing a messaging tool. Besides revealing that the uniqueness result of the framework without choice no longer obtains, the results indicate that the players may, under some conditions, opt for inefficient signals.

Turner, Laurence A. "Announcements of plots in Genesis." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1989. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3441/.

Full text
Abstract:
The narrative blocks which comprise Genesis are prefaced by statements which suggest ways in which the ensuing stories are likely to develop. This thesis sets out to investigate how these "Announcements" influence their respective plots. In Gen. 1: 28 the primaeval history is introduced by a three-fold imperative. The first part, "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" has some success in exerting its authority but is threatened by several factors. The second, "subdue the earth", is negated. The third, "have dominion over the animals", degenerates into a relationship of mutual hostility. Gen. 12: 1-3 contains two promises and a command. The promises of nationhood and land are threatened throughout the Abraham narrative and by the time of his death Abraham has a single heir and hardly any land. However, by the end of Genesis the ancestral family has grown to seventy people who are multiplying, but outside the land that has been promised to them. The command "be a blessing" makes hardly any impact because neither Abraham nor his descendants seem disposed to obey it. In the Jacob story the Announcement is found in 25: 23 and 27: 27-29, 39-40. Jacob's lordship over Esau is never seen. The promise of fertility/prosperity given to Jacob alone actually comes to both brothers thus negating the intended distinction. The prediction that the two will be divided is "fulfilled" but the expectation of division caused by strife is converted into separation within reconciliation. The two dreams of 37: 5-11 which govern the story of Jacob's family suffer different fates. The first is fulfilled several times but the second has three elements of which the first is fulfilled and the others are not. Unlike many scholars I conclude that Announcements influence their narratives in many different ways and that they are misleading indicators of how plots will develop. The reasons why this may be the case are explored in the Conclusion.

Abstract:
The renewed interest in chromite ore deposits is directly related to the increase of Cr price ruled by international market trends. The need of detailed knowledge of chemical features of chromitite ore bodies aims new projects focused on the understanding of chemical composition variation of such deposits. The present study, divided in two parts, has been focused on the understanding of the genesis and of the post-depositional alteration processes related to podiform chromitite ore bodies. The first part of the project focus on the major processes that influence chromitite genesis in Troodos ophiolite complex through the study of chromite chemical composition and on its related silicate inclusions that may preserve important information on parental magma source from which chromitite crystallized. Numerous silicate inclusions have been detected in chromite grains of different chromitite pods and in Cr-rich spinels of enveloping serpentinized host rock. The compositional features of silicate inclusions have been compared in term of major and REE elements with those of mineral matrix of fresh host rocks. Moreover chemical composition of selected included clinopyroxenes, were compared to experimental results of Gaetani et al. (2003) on hydrous peridotite partial melting REE contents of clinopyroxene inclusions of chromite of selected samples and in clinopyroxenes of the host rock have been measured in order to evaluate the role of a possible metasomatic process affecting chromite formation. Mineral REE concentrations were measured by means of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) using a Cameca IMS~4f ion microprobe at CNR-IGG (Pavia). The analysis of Troodos chromites associated to the study of silicate inclusions detected in chromitite pods as well as in host rock suggests a complex genesis probably related to an interaction between a hydrous boninitic melt, rich incompatible elements with a mantle lherzolite host rock. The second part of the study has been focused on post-depositional alteration processes that affected chromitite deposits of serpentinitic mélange in Kalkan ophiolite complex. In melange environments intense metamorphic alteration leads to major changes in chromite chemistry and to the growth of secondary phases such as ferritchromite and chlorite. In this study we investigate Kalkan hosted melange chromitites through textural and chemical analyses and we propose a new, post-serpentinization, reaction for ferritchromite and chlorite formation on the basis of involved phases: 2(Mg0.60Fe0.40)(Cr1.30Al0.70)O4 + 3/2(Mg2.57 Al0.32Fe0.11)Si2O5(OH)4 + H2O+1/12O2→ 7/6(Mg0.40Fe0.60)(Cr1.85Fe0.08Al0.07)O4+ 1/2(Mg9.18Fe0.34Al1.60Cr0.88)(Al2Si6)O20(OH)16. Results of textural analyses fit well with proposed reaction and show that reaction usually proceeds very close to completion. Alteration of chromite into ferritchromite is controlled by initial chromite to serpentine ratio. In chromitites high ratios prevent complete transformation of chromite into ferritchromite.

Abstract:
Os genes COI mtDNA e 16S rDNA apresentaram um amplo sinal filogenético permitindo uma boa resolução dos dendrogramas e H3 e 18S nDNA mostraram a recente divergência entre algumas espécies do grupo.<br>Studies on systematic and taxonomy of freshwater shrimp of the genus Macrobrachium Bate, 1868 are still unclear for some of its members, such as Macrobrachium olfersii Wiegmann, 1836). This species occurs from the southeastern United States to southern Brazil and is commonly mistaken with species that occur mainly in Central America (M. faustinum (de Saussure, 1857), M. digueti (Bouvier, 1895), M. crenulatum Holthuis, 1950, M. hancocki Holthuis, 1950 e M. acanthochirus Villalobos, 1967). In 1969 these species have been designated as a species-complex by Villalobos, because they share morphological characteristics, particularly in the second pair of pereiopod. This strong affinity and proposed some synonyms species is pointed by other authors. Faced with this problem, the validity of these species and the evolutionary relationships between them were verified by a wide taxonomic and molecular data. The phylogenetic hypotheses were based on partial sequences of 16S rDNA, COI mtDNA, 18S and H3 nDNA using analysis of Maximum Likelihood and Inference Bayesian. The diagnoses of the species were detailed, highlighting the differences between them. Nevertheless the morphological analysis were not enough to infer the phylogeny of this group because of the presence of plastic and variables characters among individuals of the same species and other preserved characters among different species of the genus. However, all identities were supported with additional molecular analysis based on four markers, rejecting the existence of synonymy. These species are evolutionarily related to M. zariqueyi Holthuis, 1949, from the west coast of Africa and share morphological character. The latter species could also belong to the M. olfersii complex because has philogenetic closeness, but before this afirmation it may be verified by morphological and molecular analysis. The mitochondrial genes (COI and 16S) showed a broad phylogenetic signal allowing a good resolution of the dendrograms. The nuclear genes (H3 and 18S) showed the recent divergence between some members of the group.

Abstract:
The toxins produced by cyanobacteria in surface aquatic ecosystems used for public supply constitute a worldwide concern, with poisoning cases reported in several countries. Serious health problems and even death can occur as a consequence of these poisonings. In eutrophic freshwater environments, blooms of Microcystis species are often observed and, due to its wide geographic distribution and ability to produce toxins, this is one of the most extensively studied cyanobacterial genera. Microcystis spp. are known for the production of the potent hepatotoxin microcystin. Nonetheless, a recent study with the strain M. aeruginosa SPC777 isolated from Billings reservoir (São Paulo, SP) reported its ability for simultaneous production of [L-ser7] microcystin-RR and the neurotoxin saxitoxin (gonyautoxins 1, 2, 3 and 4). This was the first report of saxitoxin production by a unicellular cyanobacterium. In this context, the present study aimed at the identification and sequencing of the genes involved in the biosynthesis of microcystin and saxitoxin in the strain M. aeruginosa SPC777 and re-evaluation ofthe production of these toxins after several years of cultivation in laboratory. For this, whole genome sequencing of M. aeruginosa SPC777 was done in the platform SOLiD V3 and ab initio assembly of the reads was performed using the algorithms Edena and Velvet. Blast analyses in the NCBI database were performed in the searchfor similarity to mcy and sxt gene sequences and to genes flanking the clusters involvedin the biosynthesis of both toxins. Furthermore, PCR and Sanger sequencing were employed to help the search for the genes of interest. The ten genes involved in microcystin biosynthesis (mcyA-J) were found and annotated from the genome of M. aeruginosa SPC777, as well as the genes dnaN and uma1, which are usually found flanking the microcystin gene cluster. The arrangement of mcy genes in the cluster has followed the same order than others described in literature, but differences were found in the sequence of nucleotides for some of the genes. For saxitoxin, only five genes among those directly involved in the biosynthesis of this neurotoxin were found using PCR and Sanger sequencing. The partial sxt gene sequences have shown high identities to others found in toxic cyanobacteria. Additionally, their translation into amino acids and the predicted protein functions and domains confirmed their identity as saxitoxin synthetase genes.HPLC-MS/MS chemical analyses have shown the production of microcystin, with the detection of the ion m/z1036, which corresponds to the microcystin-YM. Nevertheless, saxitoxin production was not observed. As far as we know, this is the first microcystin gene cluster sequenced from a Microcystis strain isolated from South America and it is also the first time that sxt genes are described in a unicellular cyanobacterium. This study has brought new insightson the origin of the mcy and sxt genes and contributed to a better understanding of the evolution of these toxins

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to attempt to read the text of Genesis 18-19 in line with the canonical approach of Brevard S Childs in order to critique his programme through its actual praxis. In chapter 1 a historical introduction to the discipline of 'biblical theology' and its texts provides a background against which to contextualise Childs's own work and its historical development. A detailed description of the approach in terms of its historical justification and its actual praxis appears in chapter 2. There certain common criticisms are encountered and refuted. It is also suggested that Childs's approach is often the target of unwarranted criticism based upon an assumed foundationalist view of hermeneutics. In chapter 3, this is developed further and it is argued that the non-foundationalist hermeneutics of Stanley E. Fish provide a heuristically powerful way of understanding the canonical approach and its 'community of faith'. Two aspects of the praxis of the canonical approach form the core of chapter 4: the necessary role of narrative presuppositions and the potential role of diachronic studies of biblical texts. A description of presuppositions necessary for understanding Genesis 18-19 are drawn from Genesis 1-17 and outlined, and the diachronic studies of H. Gunkel is used as an exemplar to test the illumination which diachronic studies may provide to readers of the canonical text. In chapters 5 and 6, a detailed exegesis is provided of the canonical text of Genesis 18 and Genesis 19. A short section on the effects of this exegesis on subsequent Old Testament texts completes chapter 6. In conclusion, the experience of reading the texts in this way is used to point out certain aspects and implications of the canonical approach which are missed when the approach is considered in purely theoretical terms.

Because systems apply different grammars, dictionaries and programming languages, the internal representation of parsed text is often different from system to system, making it difficult to compare performance and exchange useful data such as tagged corpora or semantic interpretations. This report describes how semantically annotated corpora can be used to measure quality of Natural Language Processing systems. A selected corpus produced by the GENIA project were used as ``golden standard'' (event-annotated abstracts from MEDLINE). This corpus were sparse (19 abstracts), thus manual methods were employed to produce a mapping from the native GeneTUC knowledge format (TQL). This mapping were used to produce an evaluation of events in GeneTUC. We were able to attain a recall of 67% and average precision of 33% on the training data. These results suggest that the mapping is inadequate. On test data, the recall were 28% and average precision 21%. Because events is a new ``feature'' in NLP-applications, there are no large corpora that can be used for automated rule learning. The conclusion is that at least there exists a partial mapping from TQL to GENIA events, and that larger corpora and AI-methods should be applied to refine the mapping rules. In addition, we discovered that this mapping can be of use for extraction of protein-protein interactions.</p>

Abstract:
Le partenariat regroupe les régimes et envisage une nouvelle forme institutionnelle, la firme contractuelle<br>Cooperation, outsourcing, a strategy of alliances : the business world seems to be grabbed by a frenzy of reorganization. In order to better understand the practices of these firms, we studied in a cross-disciplinary way the disciplines of management and law. We introduce the concept of legal partnership as a legal autonomous category, sui generis, and suggest its legal regulation. The obligation of a fair cooperation is what units the partners. All these relations between firms are subjected to the same rules of competition but a typology of partnership must be established and must take into account the modalities of exchanges. A good regulation suggests a differentiation of the regulations on the criteria of dependence or interdependence between the partners and, according to a second axis, of a contractual cooperation or of an organisation in network. The partnership units the regulations and considers a new institutional structure, the " firme contractuelle "

Abstract:
This thesis critically examines the earliest creative work of J.R.R. Tolkien, from which the first version of his mythology would emerge, as one coherent whole, rather than a series of individual creative acts. It argues that all aspects of Tolkien's creativity worked in a dialectic way to bring to life an invented secondary world the complexity of which fantasy literature had not seen before. In examining Tolkien's early creative process this study also offers an alternative profile and assessment of J.R.R. Tolkien, in contradistinction to the popular image of him as the elderly Oxford don, by critically reading him as a young man, student, budding philologist, soldier and World War One survivor. The scope of this thesis is a holistic examination of Tolkien's earliest creative output comprising poetry, prose, language invention and visual works and includes analysis of several of Tolkien’s early creative works which remain either unpublished or under-analysed. The study uses several contextual frameworks to offer an in-depth analysis of Tolkien’s early imaginative language invention, a neglected area in Tolkien studies, in spite of being at the core of Tolkien’s creative process. This thesis, therefore, is critically responding to a gap in Tolkien and fantasy literature scholarship, and offers new insights on the earliest writing phases of one of the most influential fantasy authors of the 20th century. The introductory chapter presents an overview of Tolkien criticism and defines the scope and range of the thesis. Chapter two examines how myth-making and language invention came together in Tolkien’s earliest works and argues that these two key elements become inextricably intertwined in the first full expression of Tolkien’s early mythology, The Book of Lost Tales. Chapter three explores the underlying religious underpinnings of Tolkien's mythology and his early attempt to employ overt Roman Catholic words and ideas into his emerging secondary world. This chapter goes on to demonstrate how Tolkien combined Roman Catholic ideas with elements of both pagan mythology and Victorian spiritualism into the fabric of his secondary world. Chapter four focuses on the role of visual expression in Tolkien's early mythology by reading two major groups of documents from this period: published drawings and paintings in which Tolkien expressed his early mythic ideas; and a group of visually oriented ‘para-textual’ elements, such as maps, charts and samples of Tolkien’s invented writing systems. These visual representations are explored as ‘trans-medial’ components which, along with layered narratives and language invention, make up the fabric of Tolkien’s invented secondary world. The last chapter of this thesis explores several ways Tolkien experimented with in order to link his growing body of mythology to the primary world. It examines Tolkien’s first ‘framework’ of transmission which relied on dreams, and dream vision, to attempt this link. The second half of this chapter explores how Tolkien developed a parallel narrative transmission ‘framework’ through the re-imagining and re-purposing of Germanic myth and legend. The thesis also includes a series of appendices: a chronology outlining Tolkien’s creative works from this time; a list of the books he borrowed from the Exeter College Library as an undergraduate; a detailed list of examples of Tolkien's early language invention from the time; and a transcript of a report on the literary talk Tolkien gave at Exeter College on the Anglo-Catholic poet Francis Thompson.
