Abstract:
The genie characters in Vietnamese legends are a topic that attracts many scientists, especially in studying genie characters from the historical-cultural perspective because Vietnamese folk legends are mostly associated with historical stories and national heroes. Moreover, the study of genie characters in the integration between the study of legend and history is the source of feelings of honor, praise and nationalpride. From this perspective, it shows that the genie characters are historicized, deified, worshiped, and the legends about genies become documents for national history. Folk festivals have become vivid symbols of genies’s beliefs. This signifies the particularly important position of the genies in the legend as well as in theprocess of national history and also in the minds of Vietnamese people for a long time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Whether identified as “genies,” “little men,” or simply “les moi,” a vast horde of personified mental faculties populates In Search of Lost Time, responsible for behaviors too instantaneous or too ingrained to come under conscious control. Representing automatic neural subroutines as self-interested beings allows Proust to apply the principles of biological selection to these psychological entities, imagining the mind as an ecosystem in which great personal upheavals—for instance, Marcel's loss of Albertine—figure as extinction events that wipe out large populations of narrowly specialized, slow-to-adapt “genies.” Since genies are optimized for highly specific micro-environments, the same “species” of genie may form in any two individuals who share such a micro-environment, with this indifference to the boundaries of the person making it possible for a shared genie-type to define an ad hoc social category: homosexuals, snobs, members of the Guermantes set. In this essay, I unpack Search's model of the mind as a population of simple homunculi and explore its effect on Proust's understanding of interpersonal collectives, from intellectual coteries to social classes. The construct of the genie, I suggest, not only allows Proust to suture together sub-individual and supra-individual scales of analysis but also enables a model of change—both psychological and historical—that is neither simply agentic nor simply deterministic. Rather, the shifting demographics of mental homunculi constitute a quantitative, probabilistic, and nonsychronous form of change, creating new adaptive niches while permitting the partial survival of prior forms of life.

‘Pasugihan’ of Banjar people (getting wealth by unusual ways) intended in this paper is three prototypes. First, the wealthy Banjar people (wealth and money). But, they get it through the ‘left-way’, which maintains genies (genie mating), spirits (tuyul), stealth swine (Babi ngepet), usues Kuyang oil, and etc. Second, they take the wealth through the ‘right-way’, which gets the wealth by doing Islamic ritual, such as fasting and reading sura Waqiah, doing Dhuha prayer, reading sura Alfatihah, even combining with Lailatul Qadr. This group also includes its own myth in society’s view of Banjar people. Third, the rich people who gets the wealth mythology irrational and rational. Abstract:
This article is an important part of the exploration of the development of local treasures related to the beliefs and behavior of traditional village midwives towards supernatural beings. The midwives in East Banjarmasin have a belief that there are supernatural creatures called supernatural beings, besides genies and angels. Their relationship with this supernatural person is very close, because supernatural people are part of their kinship. This supernatural person is believed to have taught them to massage through dreams. This creature can become an animal. Unseen people are people or humans who are God-idolized, can the time in the womb disappear by itself, or after birth disappear. The behavior of traditional village midwives towards these occult people is that they always establish kinship, by giving offerings in the form of bitter coffee, sweet coffee, water, sticky rice, eggs, bananas, red and white porridge. In Islam it is not explicitly talked about this supernatural person, there are only supernatural beings (genies and angels). It could be that in Islam the occult is grouped into genie, because genie means hidden, and the occult is also hidden. But according to the author, if there is a magic person other than the genie, then there is an Al-Quran verse that supports implicitly, namely in the Surah An-Nâs verses 4-6. That is the whisper of evil hidden into the chest (heart), not ears, and which whispers it from the genie and human.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractPhotoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for hydrogen generation has been considered as a promising route to convert and store solar energy into chemical fuels. In terms of its large-scale application, seeking semiconductor photoelectrodes with high efficiency and good stability should be essential. Although an enormous number of materials have been explored for solar water splitting in the last several decades, challenges still remain for the practical application. P-type copper-based chalcogenides, such as Cu(In, Ga)Se2 and Cu2ZnSnS4, have shown impressive performance in photovoltaics due to narrow bandgaps, high absorption coefficients, and good carrier transport properties. The obtained high efficiencies in photovoltaics have promoted the utilization of these materials into the field of PEC water splitting. A comprehensive review on copper-based chalcogenides for solar-to-hydrogen conversion would help advance the research in this expanding area. This review will cover the physicochemical properties of copper-based chalco-genides, developments of various photocathodes, strategies to enhance the PEC activity and stability, introductions of tandem PEC cells, and finally, prospects on their potential for the practical solar-to-hydrogen conversion. We believe this review article can provide some insights of fundamentals and applications of copper-based chalco-genide thin films for PEC water splitting.

Abstract:
Abstract In his reconstruction of what he believed to be a typical Mediterranean medieval society, Shlomo Dov Goitein gave prime of place to the documentary material found in the Cairo Geniza, and it is primarily through this prism that he sought to analyze the Geniza and the society it mirrored. Focusing, instead, on the literary material permits a different perspective on the genizot. The Cairo Geniza was shaped not only by the Jewish tradition, but also by contemporary practices, perhaps specifically Fāṭimid ones. The level of integration of scientists and philosophers within the broader Islamicate culture often surpassed what is usually described as “symbiosis.” The integration of Jewish intellectuals within this philosophic sub-culture requires that we correct our perception of their place in it, and that we modify our vocabulary accordingly.

AbstractMany neo-Darwinists treat natural selection of genes and individual organisms as broadly equivalent. This enables Wilson & Sober (W&S) to propose a multilevel group selection model by drawing parallels between individuals and groups. Abstract:
Genike, the imatinib (IM)-alpha form is widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) patients in China. We wanted to investigate whether there are differences in IM plasma concentrations, adverse events, health-related quality of life (QOL) and outcomes between patients treated with Genike and Glivec. Thirty included GIST patients receiving IM treatment were matched to either Genike or Glivec according to gastrectomy, body weight, body surface area and sex. There was no statistically significant difference in IM trough plasma levels between the two groups. There were no significant differences in very common adverse events of IM between the Genike and Glivec groups. IM was well tolerated, although it was associated with a significant change in cognitive function (P < 0.001), fatigue (P = 0.015), pain (P = 0.015), nausea/vomiting (P = 0.029), insomnia (P = 0.019), diarrhea (P = 0.003) and financial difficulties (P < 0.001). Physical functioning, financial burden and insomnia were significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.026). Until Aug. 2022, there was no significant difference in time to imatinib treatment failure (TTF) between the two groups. In conclusion, there was no difference in IM plasma concentration and adverse events between Genike and Glivec. Both Genike and Glivec could partially decrease the QOL of GIST patients. Physical functioning was worse in Genike group than in Glivec group, while the economic burden and symptoms of insomnia in Glivec patients were worse. There was no significant difference in TTF between the two groups.

Genizot as places of hidden testimonies of German rural Jewry have increasingly become topics of research interest. This is especially true in southern Germany, where several of these unique depositories have been recovered from synagogue attics and their contents recorded and researched. Alongside the many written texts, material evidence has also been found. An exceptionally large number of textiles were recovered a few years ago from the former synagogue in Niederzissen, Rhineland-Palatinate. This find, whose content spans several centuries, contains synagogal objects as well as textiles for personal use. This article highlights objects in their materiality and design. Their corresponding levels of use and meaning are addressed and are used to illustrate conclusions surrounding the culture of Jewish rural communities and how the self-image of the community is expressed in the design of their ritual objects.

Abstract:
Gene regulatory networks are powerful tools which facilitate hypothesis generation and candidate gene discovery. However, the extent to which the network predictions are biologically relevant is often unclear. Recently a GENIE3 network which predicted targets of wheat transcription factors was produced. Here we used an independent RNA-Seq dataset to test the predictions of the wheat GENIE3 network for the senescence-regulating transcription factor NAM-A1 (TraesCS6A02G108300). We re-analyzed the RNA-Seq data against the RefSeqv1.0 genome and identified a set of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the wild-type and nam-a1 mutant which recapitulated the known role of NAM-A1 in senescence and nutrient remobilisation. We found that the GENIE3-predicted target genes of NAM-A1 overlap significantly with the DEGs, more than would be expected by chance. Based on high levels of overlap between GENIE3-predicted target genes and the DEGs, we identified candidate senescence regulators. We then explored genome-wide trends in the network related to polyploidy and found that only homeologous transcription factors are likely to share predicted targets in common. However, homeologs which vary in expression levels across tissues are less likely to share predicted targets than those that do not, suggesting that they may be more likely to act in distinct pathways. This work demonstrates that the wheat GENIE3 network can provide biologically-relevant predictions of transcription factor targets, which can be used for candidate gene prediction and for global analyses of transcription factor function. The GENIE3 network has now been integrated into the KnetMiner web application, facilitating its use in future studies.

We describe the development, tuning and climate of PLASIM-GENIE, a new intermediate complexity Atmosphere–Ocean Global Climate Model (AOGCM), built by coupling the Planet Simulator to the GENIE earth system model. PLASIM-GENIE supersedes "GENIE-2", a coupling of GENIE to the Reading IGCM. It has been developed to join the limited number of models that bridge the gap between EMICS with simplified atmospheric dynamics and state of the art AOGCMs. A 1000 year simulation with PLASIM-GENIE requires approximately two weeks on a single node of a 2.1 GHz AMD 6172 CPU. An important motivation for intermediate complexity models is the evaluation of uncertainty. We here demonstrate the tractability of PLASIM-GENIE ensembles by deriving a "subjective" tuning of the model with a 50 member ensemble of 1000 year simulations.

Abstract:
Abstract The Cairo genizot (plural of Geniza) provide not only new Arabic literary texts but also new contexts. This study explores different kinds of context by presenting several examples of Arabic literary material found mostly in the Ben Ezra Geniza (BEG). The examples include three tales that also appear in the Arabian Nights literature, a Judeo-Arabic fragment of a Šīʿī kitāb al-ğafr, a Muslim historical work dealing with Muḥammad’s letters to foreign rulers, a playful romantic polemical exchange between a Jewish man and a Christian woman and more. Thinking about different kinds of context is one of the ways to reconnect the study of the documentary and the literary genizot.

Abstract:
Abstract. Here we describe GENIE-M, a new and improved version of the Grid ENabled Integrated Earth system model (GENIE), which is a 3-D earth system model of intermediate complexity. Main development goals of GENIE-M were to: (1) bring oceanic uptake of anthropogenic transient tracers within data constraints; (2) increase vertical resolution in the upper ocean to better represent near-surface biogeochemical processes; (3) calibrate the deep ocean ventilation with observed abundance of radiocarbon. We achieved all these goals through a transparent process of calibration that mostly consisted of objective model optimization. An important new feature in GENIE-M that dramatically improved the uptake of CFC-11 and anthropogenic carbon is the depth dependent vertical diffusivity in the ocean, which is spatially uniform in GENIE-1. In GENIE-M, biological production occurs in the top two layers above the compensation depth of 100 m and is modified, for example, by diagnosed mixed layer depth. In contrast, production in GENIE-1 occurs in a single layer with thickness of 175 m. These improvements make GENIE-M a well-calibrated model of intermediate complexity suitable for investigations of the global marine carbon cycle requiring long integration time.

Abstract:
Central European genizot, protected and closed spaces, usually in a synagogue attic, were for centuries used by local communities as a storage area for worn-out ritual objects, especially textual relics. However, beside the expected objects requiring genizah according to halakhah, genizot also contain objects that have no obvious connection to religion. Most remarkable is the abundance of shoes of various types and materials. These may have belonged to the deceased and as such, according to Jewish custom, should not be worn by anyone else. The practice of setting aside shoes, however, may have been influenced by non-Jewish customs.
