Full textFour algorithms are proposed to take advantage of heteregeneous architectures. The first one addresses the visualization of the quality of CAD surfaces to validate visually the model quality. Then, fluid flow simulation of waves in shallow water is described based on an efficient numerical scheme. Our implementation produces a performance increase of a factor 40 compared to an optimized version. Finally, two algoritms focus on the simplifaication of 3D object shapes to reduce the preparation time to finite element models. The first one is a hybrid algorithm f shape simplification, using a graphics board for the most intensive computations and the main processor to ensure the consistency of the data structures. The second one describes a shape simplification algorithm adapted to heterogeneous architectures and its implementation using a cellular architecture of type 'Cell BE'

Full textThe use of compliant joints reduces the mechanical clearance in robotic manipulators. However, the particularities of their behaviour, which differs from that of conventional joints, cannot be taken into account in existing models, which mitigates the expected gain in accuracy. In this thesis, a model satisfying both the kinematic constraints and the static constraints between the joint variables is proposed. It enables to precisely describe the behaviour of a compliant mechanism, notably by allowing the consideration of several degrees of freedom for a single compliant joint. The generalized coordinates, which correspond to a minimal set of joint variables required to completely describe the configuration of the mechanism, are used to calculate the pose of the end-effector in the geometric model. These coordinates are not directly set by the user but adjust themselves such that the static equilibrium of the mechanism is satisfied. Therefore, they are function of some external parameters taken into account in the proposed kinemato-static model: the position of the actuators, the external efforts applied on the mechanism and the weight of its rigid links. Because of the complexity of some equations of this kinemato-static model, a quasi-static model was also developed. The latter gives linear relationships between the variations of the external parameters and the variations of the configuration of the mechanism. To obtain these relationships, the stiffness matrix of compliant parallel mechanisms was derived in a general form. The formulation of this quasi-static model is very simple and uses two new matrices: the Cartesian compliance matrix and the quasi-static Jacobian matrix. The latter matrix integrates the effects of the deformations of the mechanisms in its kinematic behaviour using a matrix of the transmission ratios of the motion of the actuators. Finally, three examples of applications are given in order to illustrate the contributions of these models, not only regarding the gain in precision, but also the novel possibilities they offer. From then on, compliant parallel mechanisms, but also bistable mechanisms, under-actuated compliant mechanisms and even conventional mechanisms can be modeled with the same equations.

Full textWood procurement planning is a complex activity that requires collaboration between various actors. There have been several mathematical models formulated to help practitioners in the decision making process. But, only a few of these models are actually applied in practice. Planning is still done manually, based on experience and the sum of several individuals’ knowledge within the procurement department. One possible reason is that most models do not account for important factors related to data quality, information availability, and knowledge sharing within forest companies. Knowledge management has been proposed as a way to improve the performance of the planning process. Indeed, it enables companies to understand the information and knowledge required for planning. The objective of this project is to help forestry companies integrate optimization models to improve the planning process and the decisions quality. In fact, we aim to develop a mathematical model that depicts the industrial planning process. Finally, we want to determine the impact of better knowledge on planning decisions quality. First, a comparison between two existing mathematical models and the industrial process of a specific forestry company represented by Knowledge management mapping was done. Then, through this comparison, we developed a new mathematical model for procurement planning. Finally, this model has been used to evaluate the profit of improving the accuracy of the forestry inventory data. In order to do so, we compared the plan developed using accurate inventory data (obtained from the beginning of the planning horizon) with the plan adjusted monthly based on the accurate data. The comparison of the models with the industrials process showed that the gap between them is important. The differences measured were used in the development of the new mathematical model. This model reflects the industrial process. It has been used to determine the profit of a better accuracy inventory data. We found an important profit increase equal to 7% through improving the accuracy inventory data of 30%.

Full textThis thesis investigates the force capabilities of two-degree-of-freedom planar parallel mechanisms that are equipped with safety clutches (torque limiters). The force capabilities are studied based on the Jacobian matrices. The maximum force that can be applied at the end-effector for given torque limits (safety index) is determined together with the maximum isotropic force that can be produced. The ratio between these two forces, referred to as the force effectiveness, can be considered as a performance index. Finally, some numerical results are proposed which can provide insight into the design of cooperation robots based on parallel architectures. Considering each link and slider system as a single body, approximate dynamic models are derived based on the Newton-Euler approach and Lagrange equations for the tripteron and the quadrupteron. The acceleration range or the external force range of the end-effector are determined and given as a safety consideration with the dynamic models.

Full textThe industrial market requires a good quality production with competitive prices; this is the case in the wood planing industry. The downtime impact on productivity is a complex phenomenon, and understanding this phenomenon represents a real challenge for industrials. The main goal of this thesis is to analyse and identify the specific causes of the planing process performance degradation. The process put forward in our study is inspired by the DMAIC approach (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) of Six Sigma. The use of the DMAIC approach in our study showed that 80% of non-performance is due to the unscheduled downtime of machines. To solve this issue, it is essential to eliminating the not quality of the inputs and dysfunctions of the production line and this should be done by implementing a preventive maintenance strategy; Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM).
