Abstract:
The article analyzes the formal and structural aspects of the genitive metaphor, focusing on modern trends in its use and interpretation. Based on the analysis of various linguistic corpuses and examples from well-known works and publications, the article demonstrates a wide spectrum of variations of the genitive metaphor and its role in shaping the language image. The article analyzes four types of metaphorization – full metaphor structure, one-sided semasiological metaphor, one-sided onomasiological metaphor, and etymological metaphor. Abstract In this paper I reconstruct two separative argument structure constructions for West Germanic: one involving a genitive of origin and one involving an instrumental in the process of being subsumed under the dative. Although neither genitives nor instrumentals/datives are typically used to refer to literal origins in space in any of the languages under consideration, a number of verbs attested with genitives and instrumentals/datives can be semantically related to each other as expressing different metaphorical extensions from the concept of separation. The very potential of metaphor flags to aid analysts in the process of identifying and interpreting metaphor has led to the development of metaphor signaling as a new area of study within metaphor analysis (Skorczynska, Ahrens 2015; Herrmann 2013). This paper investigates metaphor signaling by focusing on a specific type of metaphor flag (MFlag) that has not been analyzed in a more targeted fashion, and that has been excluded from consideration in the MIPVU (Steen et al. 2010). Namely, it examines the signaling use of the genitive construction by means of ’s. This is done by observing (i) the

The metaphor «depth of the garden» introduced in the stage direction of the first act of «Uncle Vanya» is analyzed. It is proved that both entities of the genitive metaphor have a metaphoric meaning. The metaphoric meaning of the lexeme ‘garden’ is connected with units of legal semantics. The lexeme ‘depth’ is connected with water metaphors in the text. ‘The depth of the garden’ points to the degree of Serebryakov’s doomness in his search for God’s mercy, which is depicted through water images. Abstract Newspapers create publicity, draw attention to topics, and try to gain thematic acceptance from the reader. To achieve this, they use linguistic strategies and select culturally and historically evolved encyclopedic knowledge sources. In our pilot study we explore the presentation of the events in the Middle East–North African region between December 2010 and November 2011 that were soon metaphorically framed as the Arab Spring. To this end, we use a text corpus consisting of 300 opinion pieces from five national German newspapers. To get access to the conceptual knowledge structure a

Abstract:
The distribution of the Saxon genitive and the of genitive in computer manuals is significantly different from their distribution in other texts. This is because the manuals contain a high proportion of computer nouns (nouns referring to computer hardware and software), which pattern like human nouns rather than like inanimate nouns. An analysis of the conventional metaphors used to talk about computers reveals that they are often construed as people, and the higher proportion of the Saxon genitive is a grammatical repercussion of this construal.

One of the main characteristics of German technical language is the nominal style, which includes complex pre-nominal and post-nominal extended modifiers. A commonly held view is that these are less common in Swedish due to language-specific restrictions and preferences. As such, they may pose a challenge to Swedish translators. This essay examines this particular problem and focuses on the translation of four different complex extended modifiers: adjectival, participial, genitival and prepositional. The aim of this study was to determine which syntactic structures are used when these modifiers
