Full textThis dissertation shows how the figure of the génie was constituted in France over the course of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, by highlighting the paradoxes which allowed such a figure to become the fundamental notion of modernity. The analysis revolves around three main lines. First, the circumstances for the invention of the very term génie in the French language are examined by focusing on the Greco-Latin cultural background it carried along. As a result, the notion appears as intimately connected to the genius of the French language and its history. Secondly, the analysis focuses on the role this notion played within the normative framework of poetic production at the end of the 17th century. Paradoxically, the value of the génie, which was then defined as the natural ability for the exercising of a regulated technique of poesis, was inconceivable without the transgression of such a normative framework. This social paradox underscores the fact that a génie was, at once, considered both as exceptional and exemplary. Finally, this very paradox his analyzed further within the trajectory of the development of aesthetic theories, during the 18th century, which were founded on a community-defining experience of beauty. This specific issue his examined with reference to the interest sensualist philosophers displayed, in particular, for the mechanisms of invention and discovery. The investigation comes to the following essential conclusion: the génie was, at the same time, problematic for the theories that attempted to circumscribe it and unifying for the communities which were illustrated through it.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers can work with gender pedagogy using gender-neutral children's literature. Research indicates that children knows early what is expected of them because of their gender. The Swedish curriculum (Lgr 11) advocates that the teacher should counteract the traditional gender patterns while influencing and shaping students' perception of what is typical for men and women. In order to do this, it is necessary to teach the students in gender education. Children are affected by all the impressions that surround them, why children's books are a good starting point in the conversation about gender, among other things. The method is to initially make an inventory of completely gender-neutral children's books published in Sweden, in order to analyze a selection of these, both separately and comparatively. After the analysis, an ethnographic study is implemented, where a teacher is reading aloud and the class has a book-talk, which results in discussions about the importance of belonging to a gender. The study shows that finding acceptance for differences and go against the norms is becoming more complicated the older the children are. The conclusion is that it should be more education in gender pedagogy; more gender-neutral children's literature and that more research should be done in this area.

Full textAn analysis of Zolas Nana focusing on male desire. Through a study of the narrtive structure and the polemic relation between the concepts of “Nature” and “Culture” it is shown that opposing ideologies are imbedded in the text. Nana is a symbolic character, in large, a myth created by male desire that eventually becomes a manifestation of that desire. At the same time, however, the character Nana evolves from being a mirrored image of male desire into a more stable and real individual and this process is also an answer to when and why she dies, underlining the fact that she initially was a creation emanating from male desire and in losing those symbolic functions she loses her function in the novel.

Full textThis study examines the love and desire between Angela von Pahlen and Stanny Landborg in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Fröknarna von Pahlen series. I have studied the characters in Krusenstjerna’s texts using Judith Butler’s theory of the heterosexual matrix. My main focus has been the desire in Fröknarna von Pahlen. Drawn from the primary question, “What is love?”, I examine the desires possibilities and obstacles.
The essay is divided into two parts. In the first part I read Fröknarna von Pahlen against its contemporary view on homosexuality. I have found both an awareness of the contemporary view but also a tendency to surpass this view, go beyond it in order to create something new. In the second part of the essay I focus on the relationship between the two young girls, Angela and Stanny, and a few other characters close to them. The desire in Krusenstjernas texts reaches an almost universal level, it is written as the same irrespective of between what or who it is expressed. The characters are however also always subject to culture and society which is dominated by the heterosexual matrix. Its rules for sexuality are embodied in different ways, through actions or thoughts, and are constantly present.
The novels use both the hetero-normative model for love and the ones the heterosexual matrix rules out as unwanted. But through repeating these models differently the text becomes a subversive instrument in the deconstruction of the heterosexual matrix. By means of applying a lyrical tone to the text and by putting the “divergent” love in a secluded place Agnes von Krusenstjerna brings her text to something new and bends the rules for what desire and love are allowed to be.
Holmqvist, Moa. "Omstörtande och återupprättelse : begärsstrukturer och budskap i Aurora Ljungstedts En jägares historier." Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Gender, Culture and History, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-95.
Full textThe aim of this study is to examine how the Swedish writer Aurora Ljungstedt describes relations and desire in her En jägares historier, and what political message she tries to send her audience through that description.
I have applied Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theory of erotic triangles to the relationships in En jägares historier and found that they are structured in the way Sedgwick describes. The structure works to uphold and, when needed, re-establish patriarchal order in the book. Most female characters in En jägares historier are – also in line with Sedgwick’s theory – no more than articles of trade between men. Only one woman surpasses this female role, and she is also the only main character in the book who is not involved in any triangular desire.
Ljungstedt uses a male perspective, the flaneur, to tell her story, which gives her opportunity to speak ironically of the male view on women. Still, her view on patriarchy and women’s liberation is ambivalent – the fall of patriarchy is connected with revolutionary tendencies that she clearly dislikes – instead, her political message becomes clear in the constantly underlying motives of devotion and commitment. These motives are most clearly illustrated in the recurrent motive of parents abandoning their children. The positive change from passivity and indifference to involvement and responsibility pervades the entire book.
Wehlin, Monika. Thesis, Södertörn University College, School of Gender, Culture and History, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-96.
Full textThis paper focuses on the subject of Simone de Beauvoir and how she creates her view of motherhood. With help from Toril Moi’s method – which she calls personal genealogy – as a standpoint I have read Beauvoir’s autobiography Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter with and against her essay about women, The Second Sex.
The genealogy tries to understand the term ‘making’ and the idea of production or construction and the personal genealogy sees the subject – the person – as an extraordinarily complex effect of a whole network of different discourses or determinants. In order to be able to understand Beauvoir’s view on motherhood I have read her philosophy with and against the feminist philosopher Ulla M. Holm’s and the radical feminist Adrienne Richs’ theories about mothering and the institution of motherhood.
In Beauvoir’s other works I have also found keys to the patriarchal motherhood she writes about in The Second Sex. A motherhood she in her individual life dissociates herself from, and through which she creates her own self, when she ten years after The second Sex publishes the first volume in her autobiography. With help from Julia Kristeva’s theory about the abject my study also shows that the ”motherhood as slavery” that she runs away from has made engraving marks in her own body.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to analyze how homosexuality is portrayed in young- adult novels. I use books published in Sweden from 1977- 2003. Three of the books have female main characters and the other three have male main characters. My purpose is therefore to compare the different results between the sexes.
I will examine and discuss the homosexuality in the novels with focus on the homosexual identity of the young characters and how it is formed. I relate the results to a queer discussion about identity. My results show that there has been a development in how the homosexuality of the main characters is portrayed; the majority of the late works describe homosexuality as socially constructed and not biological.

Full textIntroduction: Stress and stress related diseases are pressing issues in today’s society. The proportion of stressed teenagers in Sweden are high. 30 % of girls in school year 4-9 and 23 % of boys at the same age indicates stress. 40 % of girls in school year 2 in high school indicates stress and 20 % of the boys at the same age. The reason for it is school related demands and homework. The aim: The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a gender difference in perceived stress in Sweden, Denmark and Norway among teenagers.Method: This study is a literature survey. Databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, Sociological abstracts, Social Services Abstracts and Medline were used to find studies. To be able to choose studies with a high quality we used a grading template.Result: Both girls and boys indicate a high perceived stress. A higher proportion of girls than boys. Girls also indicated a higher level of demands from achievements and a lower degree of self-esteem.Conclusion: It is difficult to reach a conclusion about what impact the gender has on the teenagers’ health or lack of it, and how much that can be explained by biological factors. However, girls and boys have different expectations and demands of the society, which may create a higher level of stress amongst girls.

Full textThe aim of this paper is to analyze how gender is expressed and created through four popular fictive children's books. The characters in the books are analyzed from a gender perspective. A central point of departure is the theory about how males and females are separated by being given different characteristics and how this distinction creates gender. The paper also analyzes the narrative form of the different books, whether this form is expressed in a masculine or feminine matter. The risk with such stereotype characteristics for male and female characters is that children might be influenced by them, forcing them into certain gender positions, which might prevent them from forming their own unique identity. The method for the paper is a qualitative text analysis. The analyzes and results show that stereotype gender is expressed and reproduced through the different characters in the books. Some characters problematize these stereotype genders by showing both feminine as well as masculine characteristics. My thesis is that this expression of both masculine and feminine characteristics is the ultimate problematization of stereotype gender. The four books also contain similar narrative forms where they are all told in a masculine way by being very structured and explicit through parts such as beginning, middle and ending.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to analyze how gender is portrayed in picture books. The analyzed data consist of ten picture books. The selection of the ten books were made by two libraries producing information about the most borrowed picture books year 2020 for children in the age of 3-6 years, the older children in preschool. This analysis is carried out through a hermeneutic text analysis from a gender perspective. Our conclusion is that picture books largely depict gender based on the stereotypes that previous research discuss, either in text, image or iconotext. The conclusion is based on the stereotypical characteristics of the male and female characters as well as on how environments are portrayed in the analyzed books. The books with male protagonists generate a story that is fast and eventful in comparison with narratives with female protagonists. The characters’ characteristics reflect traditional gender patterns regardless of whether the characters are animals or humans. It is often the pictures that reinforce gender stereotypes, for example through colors or clothes.

Mio in Mio, my son (Lindgren 2011/ 1954) represent the kind, but brave boy as a main character and Lussi in Snäll (Dahle & Nyhus 2008) represents the kind, but norm breaking girl as the main character. The main issues are how pupils in the 6th grade interpret the chosen literature from a gender perspective, and how it affects the students in their thoughts about gender and gender norms. What is interesting is that in every time with its own culture and history, there is room for change (Hedlin 2010 s.20). Does this change happen when the pupil interacts with the books? The pupils have answered a questionnaire about the gender perspective in each book, and I chose to analyze the questionnaires of six pupils, three boys and three girls. The results show that the pupils have seen a clear gender perspective in the literature and on this basis, they developed their understanding and ultimately, they have been able to formulate their thoughts about gender and gender roles on a deeper level.
