Abstract:
The tradition of “biographies of eminent monks”, kōsōden, was adopted by Japanese Buddhist masters from China and developed in various works, including collections of setsuwa tales. There are three components in monastic biographies: the path of the Buddha, retraced by his follower; the role of the monk in the history of the country; ascetic experience, which allows to assign the monk to one of the categories within the community (exegete of the Buddha teaching, miracle worker, merciful helper to the suffering living beings etс.). The genre of biographies partly overlaps with other genres: tales about miracles and about posthumous retribution; the same story, depending on the context, may shift toward one of these genres. “Genkō Era Buddhist History” (“Genkō Shakusho”, 1322) contains about 400 biographies of monks, which are divided in several categories. What categories turned out to be the most extensive in this text – in particular, the biographies of miracle workers – allows us to make some assumptions about the sources the compiler used or at least took into account. One of these sources was “Anthology of Tales from the Past” (“Konjaku monogatari-shū”, 1120s). This collection of setsuwa tales showcases the structure of biographies as they differ from texts of related genres based on several series of examples. In turn, a number of stories included in this collection trace back to “Miraculous Tales of the Lotus Sutra” (“Hokke Genki”, 1040s). A comparison of the two texts shows how, with a change in context, the tale about a miracle can become the tale about of a person who experienced a miracle, that is, acquire the features of a life story.

Przedmiotem artykułu są ekfrastyczne reprezentacje postaci i malarstwa Epifaniusza Drowniaka oraz Genko Ivana Genkova (nazywanego „Genką-wariatem”), funkcjonującew rejestrach literackich, krytycznych i publicystycznych. Rewelatorska twórczość, traumatyczne biografie obu artystów posiadają potencjał legendotwórczy; byli oni podobnie stygmatyzowani, wykluczani przez swoją odmienność. W ustrojowych warunkach powojennych Polski i Bułgarii podlegali licznym deprecjacjom jako kłopotliwi politycznie Łemko i dysydent, podczas gdy ich obrazy uchodziły za paszporty tych krajów do światowej sztuki. Ekfrastyczne i hypotypiczne uobecnienia malarstwa, osobowości („sur une idée du tableau”, „sur une image de l’artiste”) Nikifora i Genkova są w artykule podstawą analizy porównawczej i interpretacji m. in. w aspektach wykluczenia, transgresji, performansu.

Abstract:
Japanese gentō (originally a translation of the English term “magic lantern”) is a still-image projection system that enlarges images on a transparent slide or film and projects them onto a large screen. Most studies argue that the magic lantern, stereopticon, or gentō thrived from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries and that their use declined in the early twentieth century with the arrival of the motion picture. This article examines the revival and redevelopment of gentō in mid-twentieth-century Japan, focusing on its use in 1950s social movements (including labor, social welfare, and political protest movements) and exploring how independent gentō works represented the landscapes, histories, and everyday lives threatened by the presence of U.S. military forces in Japan. It also examines the representation of female gender and sexuality in these gentō works, looking at the ways they depict women as both symbols of a victimized and humiliated homeland and as threats to the order of paternalistic family and society in Japan.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the textbook “Genki I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese” in terms of cultural elements. The data of this qualitative research were collected by means of the document review method. Content analysis, one of the qualitative analysis techniques, was used in the evaluation of the research data. A second coding was carried out by a second researcher to ensure the reliability of the study. The categories in the study were formed in the line of the cultural product, thought and behavior classifications developed by Tomalin & Stempleski (1993). In addition, the tools for cultural instruction, as taught by Qu (2010), Frank (2013), Peterson & Coltrane (2003), have helped to create the relevant codes. In comparison of the cultural elements in the textbook “Genki I: an Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese”, this study found that the textbook emphasizes more on the elements related to behavioral dimension of the culture, but does not give much room for the elements related to belief dimension. Also, the textbook “Genki I: an Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese” was observed to use the device of “describing and explaining the culture”, at most.

Saunders, Rachel Mary. "Xuanzang’s Journey to the East: Picto-textual Efficacy in the Genjō Sanzō emaki." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:23845439.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation asks how, in the context of elite medieval Japanese painting, matter could constitute meaning. This is attempted through a case study of one of the last great medieval illustrated handscrolls (Jp. emaki) yet to receive full treatment, the Genjō Sanzō-e (Illustrated Life of Xuanzang). Produced by the atelier of the enigmatic court painter Takashina Takakane (fl. ca. 1309–1330), the Genjō Sanzō-e has long constituted the mysterious jewel in the crown of the genre known as kōsōden emaki, or illustrated handscrolls of the lives of eminent monks. The work relates the life of the seventh century Chinese monk Xuanzang (ca. 602–664), who made an epic seventeen year pilgrimage from China to India to obtain sutras for translation into Chinese, thereby changing the course of Buddhist history in East Asia. The Genjō Sanzō-e comprises twelve illustrated scrolls that cumulatively measure almost two hundred meters. It was sequestered for hundreds of years at the spiritual heart of the Daijō-in imperial cloister of Kōfukuji, Nara, where it served as both icon and relic. This history of hermeticism led to the generation of an auratic narrative of a hermetic handscroll that turned on the perverse charisma of the invisible object. Already intellectually quarantined as a “very special object” by virtue of its emaki format, the scroll’s ontological complexity indirectly contributed to its further art historical isolation. Its first ever full exhibition in 2011 catalyzed this study, which interrogates the composition and function of illustrated sacred biography on both the hermeneutic and non-hermeneutic levels, as both text and sacred object. Micro-readings of the scroll texts and paintings against a constellation of self-indicated lexical and pictorial sources reveals that the source of the scroll’s efficacy as a numinous object lies in an exquisitely choreographed analogical mode of explicitly intertextual composition, producing a self-canonizing object that manipulates the expressive plasticity of the picto-textual handscroll format to deliver a customized re-telling of the life of Xuanzang. These findings challenge the conventional history of medieval Yamato-e painting, the category of kōsōden emaki, and Euro-centric conceptions of iconicity and the autonomy of the artifact.

Abstract:

Tourism is one of the fast growing industries in 21st century. The tourism has been fuelled by the growth in leisure time and engaged in holidays both domestically and internationally. The tourism industry is also essentially regarded as service industry. In view of this, the Ministry of Economic Affairs saves no endeavors on assisting those cultural and creative factories which have willingness for transformation and upgrading. By referring through the design and planning of the overall development, the successful experience of foreign tourism factories and through comprehensive scheme, they would become the factories which combine manufacturing, historical culture and tourism demand. Apart from manufacturing production, in Taiwan factories have also been transformed to open-to-the-public tourism factories. Under such circumstances, in addition to the manufacturing process, consumers can understand and strengthen product identification, and also create a different kind of tourism niche. Besides improving local tourism income, it is also beneficial for diversifying tourism market demand. We take Plum Genki House as case study, consisting of Service Quality, Experiential Marketing and Customer Satisfaction Degree of a Tourism factory. According to Dabholkar et al. (1996) in terms of quality of service proposed RSQS scale to measure basis. Experiential marketing by Schmitt (1999) proposed that is based on the senses, emotion, action, thought and association composed of five measure factors. Customer satisfaction is referred to the American Customer Satisfaction Index reference model (ASCI) views. In this study, the survey was applied at Plum Genkikan House during January to February at year 2015 for the sampling. Total valid questionnaires are 330. Statistical analysis is worked out in light of the narrative structure of the sample analysis, reliability and validity analysis, and the overall pattern of each facet of analysis. According to the study, when it comes to the customer base, we notice that the number of female is more than male. Regarding age, it is between 31 to 40 years old. For educational degree, college or university is the majority. As to occupation, most of them are students. With respect to place of residence, visitors from the southern part are the majority. In addition, as far as the total satisfaction is concerned, the experimental marketing is greater than service quality. Thus, we can determine that the experimentail marketing has more influence on satisfaction.

Abstract:
Abstract The introduction examines the Chan (Zen) style of Zhongfeng Mingben (1263–1323), the most prominent Chan teacher of the Mongol Yuan dynasty. A complete translation of Zhongfeng’s autobiography is provided. It is a ledger-like account of his itinerant life in mountain hermitages and houseboats. Zhongfeng may have modeled himself on the legendary vagabond Budai. Zhongfeng has two Chan records: Zhongfeng Extensive Record and Zhongfeng Record B. Key motifs are as follows: everything is a phantasm (huan); the great matter of samsara is each practitioner’s own existential problem; Chan is the Chan of Pure Land, and Pure Land is the Pure Land of Chan; and enter deeply into one (specialize in either Chan or Pure Land nianfo). Two of Zhongfeng’s students, the Yunnan native Xuanjian and the Japanese Rinzai Zen monk Jakushitsu Genkō, receive treatment. Lastly, the influence of Zhongfeng and his major disciple Tianru Weize on subsequent Ming-dynasty Chan is investigated.

Abstract:
The Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC), Japan set up the taskforce on introduction of risk informed regulation (RIR) into nuclear safety regulations in April 2004. Since then the taskforce (Chairperson: Prof. Genki Yagawa, Toyo university) has reviewed the status of risk considerations at related organizations and discussed the issues for developing RIR in Japan. Recently, the taskforce prepared the interim report on the review results and discussions, and NSC approved it in December 2005. The report described that the risk consideration in related organizations in Japan has made progress in line mostly with the NSC’s basic policy for introduction of RIR expressed in 2003. However, the following topics were identified as important issues for further promotion of RIR introduction: policy for utilization of risk information considering Japanese features, usage of safety goals and performance objectives in RIR, decision-making process using risk information, pilot program, PSA quality, improvement of safety examination guidelines considering risk information, utilization of risk information in nuclear fuel cycle facilities and risk communication.

Spring, J. P., and D. M. McLaughlin. "Rod Bundle Heat Transfer: Steady-State Steam Cooling Experiments." In 14th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. ASMEDC, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone14-89734.

Full text
Abstract:
Through the joint efforts of the Pennsylvania State University and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an experimental rod bundle heat transfer (RBHT) facility was designed and built. The rod bundle consists of a 7×7 square pitch array with spacer grids and geometry similar to that found in a modern pressurized water reactor. From this facility, a series of steady-state steam cooling experiments were performed. The bundle inlet Reynolds number was varied from 1 400 to 30 000 over a pressure range from 1.36 to 4 bars (20 to 60 psia). The bundle inlet steam temperature was controlled to be at saturation for the specified pressure and the fluid exit temperature exceeded 550 °C in the highest power tests. One important quantity of interest is the local convective heat transfer coefficient defined in terms of the local bulk mean temperature of the flow, local wall temperature, and heat flux. Steam temperatures were measured at the center of selected subchannels along the length of the bundle by traversing miniaturized thermocouples. Using an analogy between momentum and energy transport, a method was developed for relating the local subchannel centerline temperature measurement to the local bulk mean temperature. Wall temperatures were measured using internal thermocouples strategically placed along the length of each rod and the local wall heat flux was obtained from an inverse conduction program. The local heat transfer coefficient was calculated from the data at each rod thermocouple location. The local heat transfer coefficients calculated for locations where the flow was fully developed were compared against several published correlations. The Weisman and El-Genk correlations were found to agree best with the RBHT steam cooling data, especially over the range of turbulent Reynolds numbers. The effect of spacer grids on the heat transfer enhancement was also determined from instrumentation placed downstream of the spacer grid locations. The local heat transfer was found to be greatest at locations immediately downstream of the grid, and as the flow moved further downstream from the grid it became more developed, thus causing the heat transfer to diminish. The amount of heat transfer enhancement was found to depend not only on the spacer grid design, but also on the local Reynolds number. It was seen that decreasing Reynolds number leads to greater heat transfer enhancement.
