Tharaud, Jerome. Apocalyptic Geographies. Princeton University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691200101.001.0001.

Abstract:
In nineteenth-century America, “apocalypse” referred not to the end of the world but to sacred revelation, and “geography” meant both the physical landscape and its representation in printed maps, atlases, and pictures. This book explores how white Protestant evangelicals used print and visual media to present the antebellum landscape as a “sacred space” of spiritual pilgrimage, and how devotional literature influenced secular society in important and surprising ways. Reading across genres and media — including religious tracts and landscape paintings, domestic fiction and missionary memoirs, slave narratives and moving panoramas — the book illuminates intersections of popular culture, the physical spaces of an expanding and urbanizing nation, and the spiritual narratives that ordinary Americans used to orient their lives. Placing works of literature and visual art — from Thomas Cole's The Oxbow to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and Henry David Thoreau's Walden — into new contexts, the book traces the rise of evangelical media, the controversy and backlash it engendered, and the role it played in shaping American modernity.

Buchler, Michael. Licentious Harmony and Counterpoint in Porter’s “Love for Sale”. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040092.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
No one would mistake Cole Porter's “Love for Sale” for a love song. Yet this less-than-subtle song about the world's oldest profession, from the 1930 musical The New Yorkers, confronts the nature of love and, by extension, the love song genre. Because of its daring text, it not only was banned in Boston but was considered so risqué that at the time radio stations across America refused to play it. Porter's musical setting of his infamous lyrics also deviated from the normative structures found in contemporaneous popular—and especially love—songs, and his structural departures were not simply motivated by relatively obvious concerns for text painting. This chapter attempts to unpack and understand these musical anomalies through close analyses of harmony, counterpoint, and text.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the paintings of John Frederick Peto, whose “letter rack” depictions constitute melancholic acts of remembering transacted through the arrangement of abandoned objects. Insofar as Peto theorizes memory through the genre of trompe l’oeil, he provokes questions concerning the extent to which recollection entails fabrication, and focused upon the insistence that such fabrication invariably turns upon sensations of loss. As Peto’s letter racks move toward subject matter relating to the Civil War, his questions come increasingly to involve embroilments of memory and memorialization, and in ways that offer an entrée into Emerson’s “Fortune of the Republic,” an essay that anticipates future acts of remembering undertaken by other generations of Americans confronted with the challenge of recalling the War with integrity.

Hindmarsh, D. Bruce. The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190616694.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Spirit of Early Evangelicalism sheds new light on the nature of evangelical religion by locating its rise with reference to those consequential changes in Anglo-American society we now routinely acknowledge with the terms Modernity, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. Bringing together a wide range of sources, the book makes meaningful connections between the Protestant evangelical awakening and the history of science, law, art, and literature in the eighteenth century. There was a profound turn toward nature and the authority of natural knowledge in each of these discourses and a more democratic public sphere available for debating contemporary concerns. In this modern context, evangelicals forcefully pressed their agenda for “true religion,” believing it was still possible to experience “the life of God in the soul of man.” The results were dramatic and disruptive. This book provides a fresh perspective, and presents new research, on the religious thought of leading figures such as John Wesley and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, and Jonathan Edwards, but it also traces the significance of evangelical spirituality for elites and non-elites across multiple genres including not only theology, but also natural and moral philosophy, poetry, painting, literature, and music. Viewing devotion, culture, and ideas together, it is possible to see the advent of evangelicalism as a significant new episode in the history of Christian spirituality.
