Abstract:
Prosthetic heart valve sewing rings were impregnated with gentamicin crobefat (EMD 46217), a poorly soluble gentamicin salt, gentamicin sulfate, and clindamycin palmitate to prevent early prosthetic endocarditis. MICs and MBCs of gentamicin and/or clindamycin were tested against several pathogens of early prosthetic endocarditis. The combination of gentamicin and clindamycin was found to be effective against most relevant bacterial pathogens. With an in vitro pharmacokinetic model, the antibacterial activity of gentamicin and clindamycin was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia

Abstract During surgery with bone grafting, the impaction of bone tissue creates an avascular area where local circulation is disrupted. If infections arise, they may prevent systemically administered antibiotics from reaching the infected bone. In this study we evaluated gentamicin palmitate (GP) mixed with gentamicin sulfate (GS) as a coating for bone chips (BCh). The efficacy of the coated BCh was measured by gentamicin base release tests using B. subtilis, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Gentamicin base release was evaluated in phosphate- buffered saline for up to 7 days using B. subtilis bi

Abstract:
Asparagus suaveolens is a medicinal plant used in Lesotho and South Africa to treat epilepsy and gonorrhea. The current investigation identifies the compound responsible for the antiepileptic and antimicrobial properties as palmitone which showed antigonorrhea activities against WHO 2008 Neisseria gonorrhea F and O strains more than the standard used, gentamicin. These results support the traditional use of A. suaveolens for treatment of gonorrhea and epilepsy since palmitone is known as an anticonvulsant agent. This is the first study indicating the presence of palmitone in the Asparagus genu

PurposeAntibiotic coating for several medical devices has been carried out; however, there are only few studies about coating hernia meshes with antimicrobial substances. In this study we checked the capacity of different commercially available hernia meshes to act as drug carrier.MethodsThe meshes were coated with gentamicin palmitate, chlorhexidine palmitic acid and chlorhexidine palmitate. The coating mass and subsequent in vitro delivery rate were evaluated for gentamicin palmitate by fluorescence polarization. For Chlorhexidine coated devices the coating mass was determined by weighing. T

AbstractVascular graft infections (VGI) are severe complications in prosthetic vascular surgery with an incidence ranging from 1 to 6%. In these cases, synthetic grafts are commonly used in combination with antimicrobial agents. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) is in clinical use as a synthetic graft material and shows promising results by influencing bacterial adhesion. However, the literature on antibiotic-bound ePTFE grafts is scarce. Gentamicin is a frequently used antibiotic for local treatment of surgical site infections, but has not been evaluated as antimicrobial agent on ePTFE

ABSTRACT: In this study we evaluated gentamicin palmitate salt and gentamicin sulfate salt mixed with bone chips after storage at 80°C. Different concentration rates of gentamicin sulfate and gentamicin palmitate were mixed with human bone chips and stored for 1–6 months at 80°C. Nonstored samples were used as control. The release of the antibiotics from the bone was carried out in phosphate-buffered saline. Abstract:
Abstract The rising number of primary joint replacements worldwide causes an increase of revision surgery of endoprostheses due bacterial infection. Revision surgery using non-cemented implants seems beneficial for the long-term outcome and the use of antibiotic-impregnated bone grafts might control the infection and give a good support for the implant. In this study we evaluated the release of antibiotics from fresh-frozen and lyophilized allogeneic bone grafts. Lyophilized bone chips and fresh frozen bone chips were mixed with gentamicin sulphate, gentamicin palmitate, vancomycin, calcium ca
