This dissertation addresses the problem of whether the Gospel of Matthew reflects a Jewish Christian or gentile Christian stance within the early church. A study of the principal theories of the evolution of the early church provides the background against which the terms "Jewish Christian" and "gentile Christian" may be understood. This thesis presents Giovanni Gentile’s actual idealism as a radical constructivist doctrine for use in moral theory. The first half describes the moral theory that Gentile explicitly identifies with actual idealism, according to which all thinking, rather than an exclusive domain of ‘practical reason,’ has a moral character. Matthew contains seemingly contradictory passages with regard to the Gentiles and the Gentile mission. On the one hand, it seems that the Gentiles are disparaged and excluded from the missionary activities of Jesus' disciples. This thesis looks at the Jerusalem Conference and Antioch dispute as described by Paul in Galatians (2.1-14) and Acts (15). A new approach to the topics is used, that of using models derived from socio-psychological research. The subject of this thesis is Jewish conversion to Christianity in medieval England. The majority of the material covered dates between 1066 and c.1290. The overall argument of the thesis contends that converts to Christianity in England remained essentially Jews. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that Matthew included the name of Uriah (Matt 1:6) in the genealogy (Matt 1:2-17) in order to legitimise granting a fully-fledged Jewish identity to Gentile converts in his own day.
