Abstract:
Brine shrimp (genus Artemia) are small (8 to 12 mm long) cosmopolitan crustaceans (Anostraca) found predominately in hypersaline water bodies such as inland salt lakes and pans, coastal lagoons, and salt works at salinity levels above 40 g(.)l[superscript(-1)]. They have been extensively studied due to their high monetary value as food for larval fish in aquaculture and their unique reproductive strategies. Brine shrimp occur as either bisexual species or as parthenogenetic populations. Despite published reviews of their world-wide distribution little is known about their occurrence in Africa.

Durvillaea, a kelp genus occurring only in the Southern Hemisphere, presents an ideal system for studies of marine connectivity and postglacial recolonisation. Durvillaea contains five currently-recognised species, four of which are non-buoyant. Whereas all non-buoyant species are restricted to the south-western Pacific, the sole buoyant species (D. antarctica) has a far wider, circumpolar distribution, strongly suggesting that long-distance dispersal in D. antarctica is achieved by rafting. This contrast in predicted dispersal ability among Durvillaea species provides an opportunity for natur

Abstract:
Festuca L. (Poaceae, Loliinae) and allied genera represent one of the most problematic taxonomic critical groups of worldwide interest, for combination of intrinsic high phenotypic variability and nomenclatural complexity, produced by two centuries of heterogeneous and, to some extent, conflicting taxonomic interpretations. The present PhD thesis, through the examination of three main ISI papers and further “satellite” contributions (both ISI and non-ISI) published during the PhD course, fills some relevant gaps in the knowledge of Festuca s.l., with special regards to three research topics: (

Abstract:
High-throughput RNA Sequencing (RNA-Seq) has emerged as an innovative and powerful technology for detecting differentially expressed genes (DE) across different conditions. Unlike continuous microarray data, RNA-Seq data consist of discrete read counts mapped to a particular gene. Most proposed methods for detecting DE genes from RNA-Seq are based on statistics that compare normalized read counts between conditions. However, most of these methods do not take into account potential asymmetry in the distribution of effect sizes. In this dissertation, we propose methods to detect DE genes when th

Abstract:
The aim of the present study is to identify the di®erentially expressed genes be- tween two di®erent conditions and apply it in predicting the class of new samples using the microarray data. Microarray data analysis poses many challenges to the statis- ticians because of its high dimensionality and small sample size, dubbed as "small n large p problem". Microarray data has been extensively studied by many statisticians and geneticists. Generally, it is said to follow a normal distribution with equal vari- ances in two conditions, but it is not true in general. Since the number of replications
