Full textIn my qualitative study, I examined textual analyses, interviews and reception analysis of how women and men are portrayed in advertising. By doing this triangulation, I have been able to highlight the research questions from different angles and therefore gotten a clearer general picture. The purpose of the essay is to increase understanding of whether and how, women and men are gender stereotyped in advertising and how they reason about this. I have also examined whether it is possible to distinguish patterns or themes, in how women and men reason if the gender-stereotyped is of the opposite sex. In order to analyse the research questions, the essay takes off in the assessments of notified advertisings made by industry's self-regulation regarding advertising and marketing communications, Reklamombudsmannen and Reklamombudsmannens opinionsnämnd. The survey shows that both women and men are good at perceiving gender stereotyping and the making of gender, in advertising. One of the selected advertisements was not convicted by Reklamombudsmannens opinionsnämnd, but both me and informants could identify gender stereotypes and gender markers in it. All informants expressed themselves to perceive gender stereotypes regarding both women and men, in the, for the essay chosen, advertisements. The analysis also shows that the individual itself, seems to be more important for how and if the informants reason about gender stereotyping, than their sex.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the representation of gender stereotypes, also with regard to ethnicity, in swedish and american gambling advertising. With the help of the theoretical framework, important parts of the content of the commercials will be analyzed. Parts that have to do with gender, representation theory, and stereotypes based on text analysis as a method. The result that could be presented is that the main gender stereotypes in swedish commercials for online-gambling are fair-skinned male characters. The myth that men love football and mainly express emotions in sports contexts, and the myth of men behaving childishly. Professionally, there is a stereotypical representation of men in the football profession, and the sports commentator profession. While in the USA it applies to stereotypically male employees in the medical profession and, jockey-professions. The narrator voices in all four commercials are also represented by men, which is stereotypical. Differences between Sweden and the USA are not big, but the american stereotypes are about how men look stereotypically masculine, when it comes to body shape and facial hair. The swedish stereotypes are more linked to ethnicity, as they are mainly fair-skinned characters. The swedish commercials are also the only ones that include female characters, albeit in a stereotypical way. The swedish commercials break stereotypes within one professional role, but the american commercials break more stereotypes when it comes to both the narrator voice, and myths. Which has resulted in a conclusion that shows that swedish commercials for online-gambling are more stereotypical when it comes to gender stereotypes, compared with american commercials for online-gambling.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to critically examine and analyze how well-known BookTubers maintain gender stereotypes within the specific subculture The BookTube Community. The ambition is to understand whether the subculture represents norms and normative gender stereotypes. The selection of the study consists of the two female and the two male BookTubers who currently, in January 2020, have the most subscribers. The material includes four videos, one from each BookTuber, where books are discussed in a general context and not based on any specific genre. The analysis is performed with gender theory as a theoretical framework and critical discourse analysis as a method, with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model as a starting point. It appears from the analysis that well-known BookTubers maintain gender stereotypes to some extent through their appearance and behavior. The way in which they discuss literature can also be interpreted as gender stereotypical in some ways.

Manliga författare överskrider kvinnliga i antal. Vår analys visar att huvudkaraktärerna inte är överdrivet stereotypa, däremot innehåller de flesta böcker sidokaraktärer som upplevs som genusstereotypa.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine prospective differences between females and males in which gendered objects they memorize, compared to which objects they pay attention to. The hypothesis was that women tend to memorize and pay more attention to stereotypically female objects since these are more congruent with her self-image, and vice versa. The hypothesis was tested experimentally, with a visual memory test containing gendered objects. Twenty-four subjects participated in the study, and the result was analyzed using two-way mixed ANOVA in SPSS. Eye tracking was adopted to measure the participants’ focused attention. Post hoc analysis was conducted using paired samples t-tests. The results showed a significant interaction between sex and which gendered objects were paid attention to. Women thus tended to pay more attention to stereotypically feminine objects, and men to masculine ones. No significant interaction could be discerned in the memory test, however. Both men and women tended to recall more masculine objects, a find which lacks explanation in the presented theory. Post hoc tests showed that only men paid significantly more attention to masculine objects. The low number of participants was considered the main reason for the absence of consistently significant results when measuring attention.

Full textHCI and interaction design are strongly linked to user experience (UX), which contains a built-in focus on user experiences and an emphasis on human values, which indicates that these values as well as ethical and political ideals are often present in HCI. The purpose of this study was to investigate if gender stereotypical design affects how people of the male or female gender experience it, and to investigate normative gender stereotypes that affect how interfaces are designed depending on if the target group are men or women. Gender is a social construct created by things in society, which forms a picture of how men and women "should" be. Design is part of this gender construction, because it contributes to the stereotypes of what is "male" and "female", for example through normative colour choices. Gender-coded design is a contributing factor in standardizing and maintaining stereotypes of gender in society. The study has been done with an introductory literature study based on the concepts user experience, aesthetics, gender coding in human computer interaction, gender, and gender as a social construct. A survey was used for descriptive quantitative data collection with the methods Structured Word Choice and numerical ranking, where the experience of a calendar interface has been tested, with a masculine and a feminine colour scheme based on existing literature on genus-typical colours. Complimentary data was collected using interviews. Certain trends emerged that indicate the coloration of an interface to be more important to women and that both male and female informants to some extent prefer the interface that was coloured according to their gender, but only marginally. Most had a neutral experience of both the masculine and feminine coloration of the interface. The conclusion drawn based on the methods above is that gender-typical colouration does not affect the users experience in any major ways. Both genders believe that function is more important than form, which is what should be the focused on when creating a good user experience in a product.

Full textThis thesis examines how male and female influencers gain trust and construct gender in their YouTube videos in 2019. With a strong ethos based on trust, influencers have the power to influence their followers and their view on gender. This gives influencers a norm-creating function. The selection of influencers in this study is limited to Bianca Ingrosso, Therese Lindgren, JLC and Anis Don Demina, who are all major Swedish influencers on YouTube. The study includes five YouTube videos from each influencer. Based on the material, a rhetorical analysis is used together with elements of gender analysis. Homosociality and a concept of tools for building trust are also used as a method for analysing the material. The results of the study show that most of the tools for building trust are used consistently. Openness, honesty, authenticity, recognition and goodwill are used as primary tools for building trust in the majority of the videos. Although the way of creating trust does not differ much between the sexes, the tools for building trust are used in different ways. A conclusion that can also be drawn from this is that influencers contribute to constructing gender in their content. For instance by having a gender stereotyped active or passive focus and by recreating habitual gender patterns.
