Abstract:
Low-pressure/high-temperature (LP/HT) metamorphic belts are characterised by rocks that experienced abnormal heat flow in shallow crustal levels (T > 600 °C; P < 4 kbar) resulting in anomalous geothermal gradients (60-150 °C/km). The abnormal amount of heat has been related to crustal underplating of mantle-derived basic magmas or to thermal perturbation linked to intrusion of large volumes of granitoids in the intermediate crust. In particular, in this latter context, magmatic or aqueous fluids are able to transport relevant amounts of heat by advection, thus favouring regional LP/HT metamorp

This thesis investigated the metamorphic history of this basement occurring in the Cerreto Pass, in the Pontremoli well, and in the Pisani Mountains. The study comprised fieldwork, petrography and microstructural analysis, determination of the bulk rock and mineral composition, thermodynamic modelling, conventional geothermobarometry, monazite chemical dating and Ar/Ar dating of muscovite. Abstract:
The peridotites from the Ulten Zone (UZ) in the Italian Eastern Alps derive from a mantle wedge, were incorporated in a crustal slab during continental subduction in the course of the Variscan orogeny, and subsequently exhumed in a crust-mantle mélange. The complex pre-Alpine metamorphic history is documented by a variety of mineral assemblages and microstructures. This PhD work aims to shed light on individual melt- and fluid-mediated metasomatic stages affecting the UZ peridotites and to contribute to the understanding of the element cycle during crust-mantle interaction in a continental col

Abstract:
Convergent plate boundaries are sites of sustained chemical exchanges between the Earth’s surface and deep geochemical reservoirs, playing a major role in the global cycle of carbon and sulfur. However, carbon and sulfur recycling processes continue to be hotly debated. A critical gap in the knowledge of the whole subduction factory is given by the limited accessibility to the upper mantle residing above the subducting plate, the so-called mantle wedge. This thesis investigates the carbonate and sulfide metasomatism taking place during the whole metamorphic evolution of a mantle wedge involve
