Abstract: With the development of technology and software, it has become easy to solve difficult problems in every field which use to take a lot of time. The use of software in the field of civil engineering has grown since the last decade. GEO5 is one such software which may be used to solve many geotechnical problems. GEO5 consists of wide range of powerful programs based on analytical method sand the Finite Element Method such as Stability Analysis, Excavation Design, Retaining, Wall Design, Foundation Design, Soil Settlement Analysis, Digital Terrain Model, Geotechnical Finite Element Analysis like analyzing and design of slope, design of retaining walls, settlement analysis, foundation design and much more .It is a very simple and powerful tool for solving geotechnical problems based on traditional analytical methods and Finite Element Methods (FEM).The easy-to-use suite consists of individual programs with a unified and user-friendly interface. Each program is used to analyze a different geotechnical task but all modules communicate with each other to form an integrated suite. In this project modules related to slope stability have been studied in details and then used them for analysis of slope stability. Using GEO5 software the geometry of problems were created in GEO5 and the analysis were carried out considering the stability and economic considerations. Also, the costs of different types of reinforcing methods were determined and compared. It is found that soil nailing is most economical. Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract— The use of natural stones in retaining wall has been a tradition and common practice throughout human history. Stone retaining walls are load bearing retaining walls, which have long been analyzed by considering the equilibrium of forces and moments applied to the wall treated as a rigid solid. Stone retaining walls can be designed for the provision of some slope stability. This paper provides a review of stability analysis of high stone retaining walls. This paper provides a review of stability analysis of high stone retaining walls using Geo5 software. The stone retaining wall examined in this study is located in Karabük (Turkey). The study area was located near of the North Anatolian Fault Line (NAF) which are the most important fault lines in Turkey. For that reason, the stability analyzes were carried out considering the earthquake situation. The stone retaining wall is made of traverten type rock. This rock is a commonly observed rock type. The height of the analyzed wall is 10 m. A 5 kPa uniformly distributed load was adopted in the stability analysis to accommodate for the heaviest loading condition during construction. The analysis with Geo5 found a wall factor of safety 1.78. At this value, it shows that the wall will stable although it is very high. Index Terms— Stone masonry walls, slope stability, Geo5, Turkey

Abstract:
Numbers of large scale polders are constructed to protect low-lying coastal area of Sundarban in Bangladesh during 1960s. At present, there are number of polders occupying an area of about 1.2 million hectares, which are vulnerable to breach and cause immense misery to millions of people every year. The purpose of this study is to assess the safety factors (FoS) of those Polder embankments during diurnal tidal cycle in coastal area and provide solution to improve the stability of embankment through installation of geogrid layers. To investigate vulnerability of the embankment failure, soil samples are collected from several borehole locations in Satkhira, a coastal site of Sundarban area. Field test—SPT and several Laboratory tests—direct shear test and Sieve analysis test have been carried out to determine shear strength, angle of internal frictions and grain size distribution. Slope stability analysis are performed using Geo5 software under several conditions—high water table (HWT), low water table (LWT) and rapid drawdown (RD) with side slope are 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2 and embankment height are 5m, 7.5m and 10m. The safety factor has been found lowest at rapid drawdown condition because of rapid recession of external water level. The lower FoS have been found 0.68, 0.89 and 0.92 which can be improved to 1.23, 1.34 and 1.24 respectively by installing several geogrid layers. Simplified Bishop Method have been used in Geo5 to perform the stability analysis under various conditions. In our investigation, HDPE biaxial geogrid have been taken to strengthen of polder embankments, which are timesaving, cost effective and efficient, side by side suitable for Sundarban area. The findings and solutions proposed by the study will help geotechnical engineers to reduce the vulnerability of Polder embankment under similar coastal conditions.

Abstract:
This paper revisits the issue of a potential substitutions of the Hoek-Brown failure model by the standard Mohr-Coulomb model in the stability analysis of rock masses. The derivation of equivalent shear strength parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb proposed by Hoek et al. [1] is addressed with emphases on the suitable range of stresses for which the equivalence of the two failure criteria applies. To that end, a simple numerical analysis of the oedometric test is carried out. It is seen that a correct choice of the upper limit of the minimum compressive principal stress is crucial for the Mohr-Coulomb model to provide predictions comparable to the Hoek-Brown model. This issue is addressed next in the light of the solution of slope stability problem. All the presented results were derived with the help of the GEO5 FEM finite element software [2].

Abstract:
The analysis of slope stability has received wide attention nowdays because of its practical importance. To provide steepest slopes which are stable and safe, various investigation are ongoing. The main objective of the project is to analyze slope of embankment by calculating factor of safety. So that an appropriate side slope can be chosen and use for the construction of highway. For this, limit equilibrium analysis has been done using GEO5 software. Swedish circle method (Graphically) has been used to performed manually analysis. In the present study, data collected from the site which is located near Shivni Village, Ner-Yavatmal road. “The construction of Samruddhi Mahamarg” is being constructed at that site. It is having high embankment heights upto 9meter. The values of unit weight of soil(γ), angle of internal friction(ϕ), cross sectional details of embankment and side slope of embankment were taken from that site. In this study, embankment of different heights (3 to 9m) under different 8 slopes (i.e. 1:2, 1:1.75, 1:1.5, 1:1.25, 1:1, 1:0.83, 1:0.7, 1:0.58), different values of cohesion and friction angle were considered. The analysis has been performed on two different cases: Case I stands for single layer of soil and Case II stands for double layer of soil by varying the value of cohesion and angle of internal friction the changes occur in the value of factor of safety were checked by comparing both results obtained by manual method and by GEO5 software. From this investigation it is found that increasing the value of cohesion and angle of internal friction, the factor of safety against slope stability increases. And for a particular height of embankment factor of safety increases with increase in the flatness of slope. From these results, it is better to use C-ϕ soil rather than ϕ soil as it gives maximum FOS as compared to sandy soil. From the analysis of doubled layered soil, it has been concluded that condition 2(with both soil cohesive) found satisfactory better with respect to condition 1(when one soil cohesive and one soil sandy). By considering condition 2 (both soil cohesive), it has been found that the increment of 25 to 30% in the FOS of condition 1 takes place.

Abstract:
This paper presents the stability analysis of a dike proposed to impound the river flood waters within an estuary near the west coast of south India. The proposed dike will be located within Ashtamudi Lake, the second largest lake in the state of Kerala, India, separating fresh water from brackish water. Constructing a dike at Munro Island portion of Ashtamudi, which is about 9.23 km from Arabian Sea coast, can meet the water demands of the region as well as prevent the sinking of Island during high tide. The river dike is designed to construct artificially as rock filled structures. The stratigraphy in the top 2 m consists of clayey mud underlined by fine to medium sand up to 6 m followed by alternate layers of clay and sand up the investigated depth of 15 m. In this paper, the stability of the dike located in an estuarine environment has been investigated and the factor of safety values have been determined with varying water level conditions and varying properties of the underlying soil. A detailed parametric study using RocScience software is presented, considering all the design conditions. The expected settlement of the dike is estimated considering the soil profile at the location both manually as well as using software Geo5. Both were in good agreement and the maximum possible settlement was found to be less than half a meter.

Elgindy, Ehab. "Extracting place semantics from geo-folksonomies." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/46263/.

Full text
Abstract:
Massive interest in geo-referencing of personal resources is evident on the web. People are collaboratively digitising maps and building place knowledge resources that document personal use and experiences in geographic places. Understanding and discovering these place semantics can potentially lead to the development of a different type of place gazetteer that holds not only standard information of place names and geographic location, but also activities practiced by people in a place and vernacular views of place characteristics. The main contributions of this research are as follows. A novel framework is proposed for the analysis of geo-folksonomies and the automatic discovery of place-related semantics. The framework is based on a model of geographic place that extends the definition of place as defined in traditional gazetteers and geospatial ontologies to include the notion of place affordance. A method of clustering place resources to overcome the inaccuracy and redundancy inherent in the geo-folksonomy structure is developed and evaluated. Reference ontologies are created and used in a tag resolution stage to discover place-related concepts of interest. Folksonomy analysis techniques are then used to create a place ontology and its component type and activity ontologies. The resulting concept ontologies are compared with an expert ontology of place type and activities and evaluated through a user questionnaire. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed framework, an application is developed to illustrate the possible enrichment of search experience by exposing the derived semantics to users of web mapping abstract applications. Finally, the value of using the discovered place semantics is also demonstrated by proposing two semantic based similarity approaches; user similarity and place similarity. The validity of the approaches was confirmed by the results of an experiment conducted on a realistic folksonomy dataset.

Abstract:
The emergency services in neighboring Jämtland, Sweden and Nord-Sør Trøndelag, Norway have identified a need to share data across department, municipality and country borders. A project is started to evaluate the possibility of sharing information through a common Web Geographic Information System (GIS). The data about resources at the various departments suffers from a high level of heterogeneity, fragmentation and protocol incompatibility. The Open Geo-Spatial Consortium (OGC) issue Web standards to harmonize the processing of geo-spatial data and promote interoperability between GIS systems. A test model based on the Thin Thread Model, emulating a potential final solution, is built to evaluate the usability of these Web standards in the situation. Successful test cases including CRUD operations and relatively smooth swapping of layer modules show that using well-established standards can be beneficial. A proposed architecture extending the test model presents the idea of a centralized proxy node and a meta data catalog. The study highlights the issue of responsibility and question of which authority should maintain centralized nodes. In order to successfully implement a Web portal, the project participants must from a technical point of view investigate how to access all desired data, agree on protocols for communication and ensure that each owner of data provides an API in agreement with the protocol. The OGC Web standards are proven a good option and focal point.

The increasing use of shallow seismic methods of high resolution, for investigations of geological problems, environmental or industrial, has impelled the development of techniques, flows and computational algorithms. The practice of applying techniques for processing this data, until recently it wasn t used and the interpretation of the data was made as they were acquired. In order to facilitate and contribute to the improvement of the practices adopted, was developed a free graphical application and open source, called OpenSeismic which is based on free software Seismic Un*x, widely used in the treatment of conventional seismic data used in the exploration of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The data used to validate the initiative were marine seismic data of high resolution, acquired by the laboratory of Geology and Marine Geophysics and Environmental Monitoring - GGEMMA, of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte UFRN, for the SISPLAT Project, located at the region of paleo-valley of the Rio Acu. These data were submitted to the processing flow developed by Gomes (2009), using the free software developed in this work, the OpenSeismic, as well other free software, the Seismic Un*x and the commercial software ProMAX, where despite its peculiarities has presented similar results

Dirt roads constitute both a work and a !eisure support for farrners, foresters and a lot of users who wish to unwind, to spend their energy or to sharc a convivial moment. They represent a vector of encounter and link between man and nature. This multiplicity of dirt roads usages and users witling to use them make it possible to keep a live this heritage, which quickly disappears without anthropogenic interventions. However, the circulation of vehicle~ used for farming or hiking, as well a~ the overcrowdîng of certain tourist sites, accentuate the soil erosion of these unpaved roads. Most of the complaints submitted to road managers are linked to these degradations as well as to practices that harm the natural environrnent, public safety and the tranquilily of local residents. The University of Jean Monnet (Saint-Etienne) and the Regional Nature Park of Pilat decided to set-up a multi-criteria decision analysis {MCDA) system in order to objectify and deal effectively with maintenance problems and conflicts arising between users. The invo!vement of territorial actors in the design of this device has made it possible to formulate acceptable solutions that respond to the unsatisfactory local situations found during a participatory cartographie diagnosis on Geo Web. Furthermore, sensitivity maps were modeled using a multi~criteria mapping software to integrate the risks associated with road erosion and the traffic of motorized hikers. The final MCDA procedure uses Geo Web solutions to provide digital tracking and information on !rails' state

Abstract:
This diploma thesis consists of a research and a practical part. The research part summarises the problem of slopes movements. The practical part deals with the determination of the slope deformation causes, at the 76th km of the D11 motorway. Causes determination was based on laboratory tests of soil samples taken from the disrupted motorway cut, made at PřF UK soil mechanics lab. Tests of grain size composition were done, plasticity of the L 26 sample was determined and critical strength of the reconstituted L26 and L27 samples was found out in the Translational apparatus box. Soils were categorized due to the according standards and the acquired data were evaluated. In the BricsCAD software, a well arranged locality situation and the slope deformation crosscut underlayed with the geophysical ERT cut were illustrated. In the GEO5 software, slope stability models were created using the Spencer Method of Slices. The slip surface and the groundwater level during the disruption were determined. The practical part also covers a proposal of a remediation appropriate for this deformation and it's modelling in GEO5. For the remediation, the slope stability level is determined. The work is based on the specialized literature, articles, research reports and standards. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Abstract:
Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is very effective for nuclear power plant. This generalized corrosion can lead to the rupture of pipe and in some dramatic cases to casualties. During the last 20 years Electricité de France (EDF) has developed software called BRT-CICERO™ for the surveillance of the carbon steel piping system of its Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). This software enables the operator to calculate the FAC wear rates by taking into account all the influencing parameters such as pipe isometrics, alloy content, chemical conditioning, design and operating parameters of the steam water circuit (temperature, pressure, etc…). This is a major tool to help operators organize their maintenance and inspections plan. The algorithms implemented in BRT-CICERO™ are based on tests conducted by EDF R&D, empirical results (national and international feedback), literature reviews and on permanent adjustments based on the operating feedback, via statistical studies. However, for some piping components, from the turbine’s hall, flow dynamics are not optimized and calculated FAC kinetics may be too conservative. EDF is committed for optimizing and increasing reliability of its maintenance programs to prevent the risk of pipe rupture due to FAC. As in consequence EDF is leading continuous improvement in parameters and calculation algorithms for BRT-CICERO™. Furthermore studies on the geometric characteristics of the pipes were conducted. In BRT-CICERO™ geometric effect of a pipe component (elbow reduction, tees …) is taken into account by considering a factor called “Geo” in the calculation to tune the thickness loss rate according the component type, its characteristics and specific effect on flow mass transfer. EDF implements finite element analysis software to compute the mass transfer coefficient k and so ascertain the “Geo” coefficient. These computed “Geo” coefficients are compared to those used in BRT-CICERO™. If necessary, current “Geo” coefficients used in BRT-CICERO™ will be adjusted and optimized to improve maintenance programs issued from the software. The presentation deals with the calculation method used for these studies and some results will be shown on tube and elbows.
