Abstract:
This issue of Mineralogical Magazine is the 5th in a loosely defined series of special thematic issues (or part issues), deriving from conferences organized by the Mineralogical Society. The associated conference was entitled ‘Environmental Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Human Health’ and took place in January 2005, in Bath. A common thread to all these Mineralogical Society conferences has been the role of mineralogy in applied science and technology and particularly in environmental science, focussing on the multidisciplinarity of modern mineralogy; the conferences (and special issues) have be

ABSTRACT Rhyolites and their deep-seated chemical equivalents, granites, are some of the most interesting rocks. They provide good examples of why it is important to look carefully at fresh rocks in terms of fıeld relationships, mineralogy, petrography, petrology, geochemistry, and alteration processes. Because of their evolved geochemisty, they commonly are important in terms of ore-forming processes. They are almost certainly the source of metal in many beryllium and lithium deposits and the source of heat for many other hydrothermal systems. From other perspectives, rhyolitic volcanic erupt

The most important Greek perlite deposits crop out on the islands of Milos (Provatas and Trachilas areas), Kimolos, and Kos, Aegean Sea, which are currently under exploitation. More than 200 specimens of raw perlite were collected from these perlite deposits and were subjected to physical, chemical, petrographic and expansion tests. The perlite deposits have been formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption, which is the last event of volcanic activity on the islands. Most of the deposits comprise the sand, ash, and perlitic fragments' formation, the perlitic lahar, the perlite beds, and the perlitic

The Murdock Creek intrusion, immediately southwest of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, in the southern part of the Abitibi belt, is a member of a suite of late Archean ($\approx$2680 Ma) syenitic intrusions located within and adjacent to the Kirkland Lake-Larder Lake fault zone (KLF), which host virtually all of the gold mineralization in the Kirkland Lake camp. An early crystallizing mafic margin consisting of clinopyroxenite, meladiorite, melamonzodiorite, and melasyenite encloses an extensive felsic core of alkali-feldspar syenite. Results from experiments in this work have been combined with existing data to yield tracer diffusivities of divalent cations in natural multicomponent garnets at 10-40 kb, 1100 - 1475°C. For the garnet compositions studied in this work, the activation energy for tracer diffusion of Mn < Fe ≃ Mg, while activation volumes increase in the order Mg < Fe < Mn. These data may be used with theoretical models to calculate the full multicomponent diffusion coefficient matrix as a function of pressure, temperature, composition and oxygen fugacity.
