I argue for the significance of the spatial and geographic in the criticism of elegy. Space and geography are important in elegy, I demonstrate, both as a strategy for ordering the emotion of grief into the practice of mourning, but also in terms of mapping the flexible, shifting distance between the dead and the elegist, inscribing memory, navigating a changed world of loss and absence, and providing a site for funeral rites. The representation of Chancery court in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House (1852-3) emphasises the inaccessibility of this institution to members of the laity. À partir d’un corpus de six pièces de théâtre produites entre 2006 et 2016 par des Palestiniens, ce travail étudie l’élaboration de la spatialité dans les textes et ses interactions avec l’espace réel dans lequel ils se déploient. En raison des fortes contraintes imposées aux Palestiniens dans leurs mobilités, la pratique du territoire représente d’abord une expérience identitaire quimarque les conditions de création et les choix dramaturgiques. Le théâtre offre un espace pour raconter cette expérience et c’est le témoignage qui occupe la scène, dans diverses formes d’autobiographie scénique.

This study examines the importance of geographical ideas in Dante’s Commedia and develops a historically sensitive geocritical methodology to analyze the function of real world geography within Dante’s poem. I aim to expand our understanding of the importance of the poet’s use of geography beyond the consulation of geographical sources and consideration of place names.
