We compare the price elasticity of import demand in the destination markets of Italian exports to the price elasticity in the destination markets of the other main euro-zone countries' exports. We use the elasticities of substitution across varieties estimated for each destination market by Broda, Greenfield and Weinstein (2006). We find that Italy exports to markets that have, on average, lower price elasticity than the markets to which France, Germany and Spain sell their exports. The result is mainly driven by the motor vehicle and other transport equipment sectors. Net of these two industr

Abstract During the past decade, poor documentation and computer software containing outdated price parameters used to screen and "correct" data taken from U.S. export declarations resulted in significant overestimation of official U.S. hardwood lumber export volumes. In the year prior to their correction, U.S. hardwood lumber exports to Europe were about half the officially reported volume. Although official statistics indicated red oak was the most important species traded, the new data indicate that, in fact, white oak exports in 1988 were actually three times red oak exports. Current trends in meat and meat products exports are considered. The dynamics and structural changes in meat exports by types and degree of processing (beef and veal, pork, poultry, finished meat products) are analyzed. The paper proves that in recent years, only meat and edible poultry by-products have taken a competitive position in the world market. Accordingly, the dynamics of exports of this type of meat is positive, and the share of these products in the structure of exported meat is the largest (86.09%). A vast body of literature recognizes the importance of exports as a driver of economic growth. The increasing share of more sophisticated exports gave birth to the idea that the composition of exports, and not just exports per se, could be crucial for economic dynamics. The aim of this paper was to estimate the relative importance of exports with different technological content on economic growth in Romania and V4 economies, considering R&D (Research and Development) expenditure as a predictor of the pattern of these exports. The empirical results reveal that exchange rate volatility and geographical distance hamper exports, while regional trade agreements (RTAs), shared borders, and dependent relationships in the past boost exports.
