Abstract:
Geographic information systems (GIS) are tools used to facilitate locational decision making in interactive, graphic-based environments. GIS and interactive maps allow users to customize displays and manipulate data for accomplishing a variety of tasks, ranging from map interpretation to wayfinding and land use planning. Although originally adopted for professional use, GIS software is increasingly utilized by both expert and non-expert users. Despite the improved availability, training in cartographic design has not followed suit and studies claim that users often employ inefficient displa

Understanding the spatial ecology and habitat use of declining species is essential for their management and successful recovery. I examined the movement patterns and habitat selection of map turtles (Graptemys geographica), a species at risk, in St. Lawrence Islands National Park. Adult females moved longer distances and had larger home ranges than juvenile females and males. The longest distances moved by adult females occurred during nesting excursions. Examining movements allowed for critical habitat locations to be found (nesting sites, hibernacula). My data on movements will allow St. La

University students were shown simulated television newscasts and then tested on the news material to see if maps within the newscast aided learning world geographic information. Students were shown one of eight simulated newscasts, of three news stories, Each newscast contained maps, varying in complexity. There were five levels of complexity. One group viewed a simulated newscast with no maps, while other groups viewed simulated newscasts containing maps with 6, 10, or 14 variables per map. A control group saw no newscasts. The order of news story presentation was varied. Students who view
