Full textHow could the place where people live have a part in promoting (improving) or deteriorating their health ? The researcher analyse health socio-territorial constructions on La Réunion island. He tries to bring together the backdrop corresponding to the populations' "environnent", which would explain how, beside social or individual characteristics, risk exposure can be influenced by living locations. Local health constructions appear to be, in each location, specific combinations of all aspects of "the environnent", term including numerous and varied aspects of life (ecological and biological data, social and family relationships, health services supplying) which surrounds and "deterrnines" populations' health. Two quarter comparative monographs (exploration of the conditions of social relationships within the districts, the spatial representations and practical experiences, social and health support authorities appropriation modes, localized active and passive treatment methods) shows processes that are firmly-rooted and filled in a territorialized daily /ife, through which the inhabitants' health builds up or worsens

Full textIn spite of the narrowness of the Reunion Island (2510 km²), there are some very remarkable regional disparities. During the colonial period, the Lowlands were differentiated from the Plains and costal slopes which were in turn differentiated from agricultural plantations in the Highlands, and the sparsely populated mountainous interior with an economy of subsistent farming. From 1946, the departmentalisation of the island brought about a huge development of the tertiary sector and a significant increase in population growth resulting in fast and massive urbanisation. The North and North-western parts of the island consisting of saint-Denis, the capital and Le Port represent the dominant "centre", leaving the rest of the island as the outskirts. Their development has overlapped onto the west coast tuning it to into residential and seaside resort. The three southern towns of Saint-Louis, Le Tampon, and Saint-Pierre are trying to build "a second centre" that will spread out over the South. In contrast, the Highlands, "les Hauts" and the Southwest form the rural outskirts/periphery whose development is slow whilst the Eastern plains (Saint-André/Saint-Benoît) or the coastal regions of Petite-Ile/Saint-Joseph are in the intermediate position. In light of these disparities and the important economic and demographic growth, traffic is a big problem and a competition for space - a rare commodity - as well as the environmental impact it has. There disparities are not quite curbed in spite of the existence of a regional development plan of the Highlands. Big projects are reserved for the reinforcement of the Northern and north-western metropolitan regions. An aggressive regional development plan of the territory is inseparable from Reunion Island's new project of durable development. The aim of this project is to bridge the territorial gap, to manage a restrained space in a thrifty manner and to foresee the consequences of global warming

Full textThe structures of space in the main two islands of the Mascarenes are polygenic. They result from successive application of two social projects: one is historical and colonial, and the other is a contemporary one of decolonization, carried out within the frame of independence and turning Reunion into a department. Those projects, different in the two islands, are combined with unequal ecological restraints and advantages to produce specific sociospatial structures which are not free of strong disparities.

Full textSince the departmentalization in 1946, Reunion knew a development without precedent, in particular an urbanization which was done gradually, currently characterized by an articulation of rural and the urban one. Moreover, the population becoming increasingly numerous caused immediate a greater consumption. Consequence of our way of life, domestic waste does not cease growing and their rejection in the environment becomes a crucial problem; they thus became omnipresent and their treatment poses problems. The project of creation of an installation of elimination such as a factory of incineration of waste causes true general outcries on behalf of the reunionnais inhabitants and local councillors. The nimby syndrome gains the population. The reinforcement of the European standards aiming at allowing a better controlled management of the waste processing seems an additional burden. Thus, the installation of the laws stated and enacted by the European Union apply on a local scale but fit with difficulty insofar as they do not take into account the local constraints and specificities
Giacomoni, Caroline. "Les représentations de la maladie du cancer liée aux modes de vie et comportements à risque chez les jeunes Réunionnais." Paris, EHESS, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011EHES0438.
Full textThe doctoral work in health anthropology ficuses on cancer representations among youth of Réunion Island. It shows the link made between lifestyles, risk behaviors and cancer disease, through several types of consumptions (food, alcohol, cannabis, tobacco) and behaviors (tanning) frequently encountered in the young population. The study seeks to identify the particularities of cancer representations in réunion context; and wants to understand how the various images linked to cancer are based, transmitted and how they take root in young healthy. If the exoticism of cancer representations is not clear, the study reveals nevertheless certain characteristics of "youth group" in which, the miscegenation of knowledge, that come from various vectors such as media, family, school, neighborhood friends, etc. , characterizes the young representational process regarding cancer in opposition traditional/modern. Moreover, it highlights the socio-cultural issues facing life-threatening cancer (calling into question the social role, the body representations facing this disease). In the end, this doctoral work provides information on society of réunion Island through the lens of cancer representations of its youth

Full textThe subject of this thesis cornes from established facts at La Reunion. At a tirne when the Reunion territorial collectivities have the challenge to put in place territorial development diagrams, for a long-term development in sports and other fields, the actors have a little knowledge of evolution and organization of federal sport organizations. What were the stages of the diffusion of sporting activities at La Reunion? How were built the sporting equipments in the region? What are the spatial behaviour of sporting participants? How can we characterize the spatial variations of Reunion sport? This study is in the field of social and culturel geography, and is linked around the notions of space and territory, The first part defines the theoretica! firame and the key concepts of analysis to determine the proper methodology to answer our questions on space and regional sporting practice. The second part explains the origins and the diffusion of the sport phenomena at La Reunion. It is followed by the heavy tendancies of the structural evolution of sport, viewed through the licensees, clubs and the local collectivities. To study this part, factors like politics, culture, socio-economy, urbanization and medias are used. The third part examines the spatial dynamics and the specificity of development politics for sporting equipments, After looking at the regional setting, we look at the municipal sporting equipment implantations. To explain the problems of sporting strutures, it is necessary to see the relations between the regional and local variations and dynamics, as well as the stake for building sporting equipments. The fourth part studies the geography of licensees and sporting clubs, From the mobility of players, we can look at the disparities of space. The participants flow in relation with the spatial settings of clubs and sporting equipments can explain the local reality of territorial sport activities. The recruitement strategies for sporting structures are put in relationships with the objectives of the clubs and the expectation of the sport participants. In conclusion, we propose a perspective of these different aspects of sport at La Reunion, and we put forward some propositions for the territorial development of local sport activities

Full textThe "tops of the Reunion Island" has always been at the heart of social, economic and political issues emerging from plural considerations relegating these territories to an image of non-rights zones, to a model of attractive regions to develop. In 1978, an extensive plan for the development of the Hauts region, accompanied by a structural land reform, was implemented in order to limit the exodus from the countryside and improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. Since the 1960s, the history of the Plains (Plaine des Cafres and Plaine des Palmistes) has been jointly marked by the structuring of dairy and lactating cattle farms around cooperative societies. The increase in these animal production sectors was a source of much interest until the 1990s. The profession (especially dairy farming) saw its first stoppages of activities and problems of taking over farms. In the 2000s, heritage, tourism and environmental protection requalify the stakes of the Plaine des Cafres originally developed by the agricultural sector. If livestock is to be reared within various management policies, activity can be considered within a fragile island context dependent on supra-national directives. By crossing various studies, we postulate that the evaluation of the socio-economic capacities of the professional sector must be accompanied by the consideration of leisure and tourist activities, regulations regardingwith regard to the protection of nature, the phenomena of rurbanization in the planning of territories and the study of heritage processes. These challenges are an integral part of the discussions on the consolidation of Reunion cattle farming in the Plaine des Cafres consider the current and future links of the activity with the changes in society in the evolution of the environment. Starting from the principle that the current changes in the territory, with their system of constraints and levers of development, are the fruit of political and institutional strategies, we ask ourselves how they are lived and appropriate by the inhabitants and what are the forms of mediations? The study of a locality in the Plains region, the Grande ferme, using an anthropological approach and an in-depth study of social networks was chosen. The originality of the approach presented is based on an articulation between a very localized approach and a regional geographical approach

Full textThe research aims to define customer engagement (CE) in the context of tourism destinations, its content and its measurement. It proposes to integrate this innovative concept as a new outcome variable in the models conceptualising tourism’s behaviors. It also shows the influence of consumer value and customer value in creating an engagement towards the destination and the moderating effects of the experience on those same relationships. The research has three objectives: (1) define the concept of CE in the context of destinations, its dimensions and its measurement, (2) conceptualize the perceived value in the context of destinations, (3) measure the influences of the dimensions of consumer valeur and customer value on EC depending on experience. The methodology is based on two empirical studies: an exploratory qualitative study conducted among 15 tourists in Reunion via interviews and a quantitative exploratory study conducted among 572 individuals: 350 novices who had never visited the destination but familiar with it and 222 experienced having actually visited the destination for leisure / vacation. The studies concern Reunion Island, qualified as a SDI (Small Destination Island)
