Added to this, the geotechnical materials on each new site on which geotechnical work is undertaken are the unique product of many influences including geology, geomorphology, climate, topography, vegetation and man. There is thus plenty of scope for innovation. This dissertation describes the contributions made to Geotechnical Engineering in South Africa by the Candidat

Abstract:
The success of rock fragmentation by blasting and subsurface fluid flow depends on many variables, including in-situ fragmentation. This study presents select data from a review of over 13000 feet of core samples drilled at seven different mine properties in the United States and Chile. Two-dimensional computer simulations of fractures can be used to quantify the volume of rock required to calculate a stable estimate of mean fragment size. Spatial periodicity of fragment size measurements is indicated through vertical variograms and is used as the basis for a statistical analysis for the zonin

Abstract:
Accurate quantification of roughness is important in modeling strength, deformability and fluid flow behaviors of joints. Both stationary and non-stationary fractional Brownian profiles with known values of the fractal dimension and other profile properties were generated. The generated profiles were in general quite similar to the roughness profiles of natural rock joints. For different values of the input parameter of the line scaling, variogram and roughness-length methods, D was calculated for the generated self-affine profiles to investigate the accuracy of each method. Abstract:
In this thesis, the morphologic evolution of uniform c, φ slopes subject to successive failures is investigated. The research is conducted in two parts; the analytical part (employing the limit analysis upper bound method) and the experimental (by small scale model tests). An experimental prototype model to study the influence of water infiltration on the morphologic evolution of natural cliffs subject to progressive retreat is presented. A set of small scale laboratory tests is designed to investigate successive failures. The failure is reached by applying rainfall on the slope through a rain

There are a number of engineering situations where fluid-saturated geological media can be subjected to thermal effects. These include the disposal of heat-emitting nuclear fuel wastes in saturated geological formations, extraction of energy resources such as oil and natural gas by steam injection and the recovery of geothermal energy by ground source heat exchangers. The objective of this thesis is to study the coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical (T-H-M) response of fractured geological media by the computational implementation of mathematical models. Abstract:
The design of new bobsleigh track is a challenging and difficult task since it requires several competences ranging from the physics of ice to civil engineering, from dynamics to tribology. Thus, presently, only very few companies are able to correctly design a bobsleigh track. Moreover, during the construction phase, unshared approximations, imposed by the orography and geology of the location, are adopted by the constructor. This leads to tracks that are usually characterized by unpredicted accelerations on the athletes (sometimes even above accepted standards). The following paper deals wit
