When stones are incorporated into buildings their mineralogical composition and texture alters to adapt to the new environmental conditions. One of the most common building stones in Scotland is sandstone. Due to its high porosity and mineralogical composition sandstones can be prone to weathering. Buildings also face increased pressure through climate change. In Scotland, the decay of sandstone is a serious proble

Abstract:
To test the applicability of atmospheric chloride deposition balance and soil water balance in the estimation of aquifer recharge , the chosen area is Vall Baixa de I'Ebre. This is a coastal area of semi-arid climate, which is located to the northeast of the Iberian peninsula, between Tortosa and Morella, where field experimentation has been carried out. The aquifer is hydrodynamically complex. It comprises the Plana de La Galera, between the rivers Ebro and La Senia, and part of Els Ports de Beseit-Tortosa, a high mountainous carbonate mass if. The average annual rainfall is 550 mm.yr-1 in th

Abstract:
In Louisiana, the beds of natural lakes are owned by the state. The locations of property boundary lines separating state property from private lands have usually been set by determining the levels of natural monuments known as ordinary high water marks. The term is confusing and subjective, leading to controversy in reference to its determination. Catahoula Lake in central Louisiana was chosen as a study site because of its large size, its 20-foot variation in water levels, and its low-relief perimeter. Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGFs) have been known since 20 years ago, but since the first moment of the discovery it was clear that they were related to lightning and thunderstorms. The latest studies revealed that TGFs could be produced during the first stages of the lightning within thunderclouds by a process which is very similar to the X-ray emissions from natural lightning observed from ground or discharges in high voltage laboratory. The study of such phenomena will help to extend and complete the knowledge about lightning and electrical discharges. This study compares geographic, mon

Underground constructions below the water table may be problematic if the role of groundwater is not properly acknowledged. Difficulties worsen in urban environments. Two aspects should be taken into account in the interaction between underground constructions and groundwater, 1) the impacts caused by the construction in the aquifers and 2) the difficulties that groundwater causes during the construction. Therefore, the design of an underground construction must be minimize the impacts in the underground environment as well as guaranteeing the safety of the workers and the integrity of adjace

Huge modifications have been made to landscape or urban watersheds, especially in twentieth century, caused by increases in urbanization have led to progressive increases in runoff flows and therefore sediment production. These conditions are exacerbated in climates with high rainfall intensities and short duration, such as those occurring in the Mediterranean Coast. These sediments especially coarse sediments can cause erosion problems and obstruction of drainage systems which in turns reduce hydraulic capacity. For these reasons, it is more and more important to study of sediment productio

The thesis focuses on the experimental and theoretical aspects of the process of cracking in drying soils. The results and conclusions were drawn from an exhaustive experimental campaign characterised by innovative multidisciplinary aspects incorporating Fracture Mechanics and classical Soil mechanics, aided with image analysis techniques. A detailed study of the previous works on the topic showed the absence of large scale fully monitored laboratory tests, while the existing studies were performed on already cracked soil, rather than focusing on the process of cracking. Debris flows are very fast mass movements and are considered as one of the most hazardous phenomenain mountainous regions. Research on this field has strongly improved during the last decades. However, many open questions remain concerning the details of the triggering mechanisms of this type of phenomena and their dynamic behaviour; both of them key points in the hazard assessment. The global purpose of this work is to improve some aspects of the debris-flow hazard assessment atcatchment scale; particularly the estimation of the events¿ magnitude, the determination of their intensity and the
