Abstract:
Abstract: Geomancy, a divinatory discipline imported from the Arab world, flourished in the Latin Middle Ages. In the attempt to explain the popularity of geomancy, translators and authors of geomantic writings, philosophers, theologians, and other scholars addressed such issues as its validity, its philosophical implications, and the worldview it presupposed. This paper explores this debate, delineating the epistemological status of geomancy in relation to astrology. The problem of the scientificity of geomacy will be discussed with regard to the celestial influences on the sublunary world. In addition, the different roles played by both the geomancer and the consultant (quaerens) are examined. Attention will be paid to the concept of intentio, which implies a psychological analysis peculiar to geomancy. Geomancy is also characterized by ritual elements such as both preliminary prescriptions and invocations of God, meaning that it is not an ordinary divinatory technique, but a form of wisdom revealed only to experienced and upright geomancers, who can thus obtain knowledge of future events and hidden things. From this analysis emerges the complex nature of geomancy, whose original Arabic version had a prominent religious character and a close, albeit ambiguous, link with Islamic prophecy.

Ellis, Eugenia Victoria. "SQUARING THE CIRCLE: The Regulating Lines of Claude Bragdon's Theosophic Architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26491.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, squaring the circle has been about bringing the incommensurable work of the gods within the realm of the commensurate by using infinite cosmic principles to regulate the finite world. The American architect Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) squared the circle using his Theosophic architectural theory that was based on a neo-Pythagorean emphasis on Number, which he believed to have contained the secret of the universe. America at the turn of the 20th century was interested in Eastern spirituality at the beginning of an age of scientific relativity when the world and universe were being questioned due to new scientific discoveries based on higher-dimensional mathematical speculations that challenged relationships between humankind and the cosmos. Paralleling this scientific search was the Western conquest of the world on earth, which brought back speculations about the Near and Far East, including translations of their ancient scriptures and encyclopedias of their architecture. The fourth dimension was an imaginary mathematical (re)creation of great interest to Bragdon and common to scientific relativity and Eastern spirituality; two cultural constructs that altered the perception of time and space to affect the American imagination and architectural production. Within this context, Squaring the Circle investigates the relationship of theory to practice by considering Bragdonâ s architecture as the material manifestation of his Theosophic architectural theory.
Ph. Abstract:
The Fa divination system, in Benin Republic, integrates ancestral knowledge and occupies a central place in the culture of southern Benin, combining oral transmission and resilience in the face of external influences. Our research examines how this system, marked by its ritual objects and practices, preserves and transmits its symbolic knowledge from generation to generation in an oral culture, while assimilating elements of geomancy from scriptural civilizations such as Islamic or Persian. Thanks to an interdisciplinary approach, our study highlights the transmission and adaptation mechanisms specific to Fa. The analysis of narratives from Fon and Yoruba corpora, combined with an exploration of symbolic salience strategies and morphosyntactic structures, reveals the ingenuity of the system in making complex knowledge memorable. This process of oral resilience, which integrates both cultural influences and modern innovations, is distinguished by an active transformation of the geomantic heritage that allows Fa to adapt to current realities without losing its essence.Among the notable results, the study demonstrates that symbolic salience, with its marked characters and contrasts, facilitates memorization. In addition, oral structures in the form of tables in divinatory verses show a capacity for logical organization without resorting to writing, illustrating a capacity for complex analysis specific to orality. This cultural and cognitive resistance, supported by ritual objects that serve as mnemonic and symbolic supports, highlights a system that renews itself while preserving the continuity of its knowledge. Thus, Fa appears not only as a divinatory system, but also as a rich and resilient cognitive model. Through its ability to integrate societal and technological changes, it maintains a strong cohesion between past and present, demonstrating that traditions, far from fading under the effect of modernity, can be transformed to remain significant

Abstract:
The Feng shui brings together the knowledge of the Chinese on the notions of time, space, environment and all the building infrastructures. It is indeed Feng shui has guided, from its "coming" almost all the buildings constructed for the living and for the dead in China. Modern ecology and environmental protection are the top priorities to be considered in architectural design. Faced with the idea transmitted by the Feng shui, we can’t help thinking that such ancient discipline, very focused on the environment and housing, can serve as a reference and inspiration in the design of contemporary architecture and treatment of the environment. The basic question of this research is to know what was, or what were, the true (s) source (s) of the doctrine of Feng shui. Through our research, we want to take a step back to the multitude of methods of Feng Shui, and intended to fully concentrate on their cross philosophy, and try to synthesize the different approaches that can have globally of the Feng shui. We have found two major "red threads" of Feng shui .First thread: the "qi 气" is the basic material of the composition of the world. Second thread: Temporality and action of Heaven understood as an impersonal power and instructing exerted on the world through natural regularities. This research is in order to build a research facility on the topic of "the application of Feng Shui in contemporary architectural and environment design" and we hope that this first step will be considered important to the continued reflection

Abstract:
This thesis deals with complex processes, relationships and phenomena which go beyond the assumed and accepted materialistic perception of the world in general and the process of architectural design specifically. It clarifies and actually redefine the sustainability from a point of higher universal principles forming our environment. At the beginning this thesis presents an extensive knowledge base of existing holistic design systems including Feng-shui, sacred geometry, geomancy or numerology. The purpose is to build and establish a solid foundation for understanding and further research as well as objectively interpreting lesser known topics as a whole. On the basis of intersecting information through the above mentioned topics we specify the hypothesis which proposes the pre-existence of one unifying design matrix of harmonic structures in architecture. The structure of its verification takes us from an analysis of the science of human perception to systems of self-similar contextual references of animated and inanimated forms. These systems of emergent form and flow are basically known as fractals, and could be expressed in both mathematical and geometrical languages. The thesis research then consists of analysing chosen examples of urban and architectural scale in sense of fractality, symbolism and geometrical matrices. We include and integrate the research of associated and relevant phenomena in pedagogical practice, and a case study of the application of fractals in development of a chosen town. From the results of this thesis we abstract five non-dogmatic guidelines or tenets for architectural design; which are supported by experimental verification on some of the author´s buildings. These tenets stand as pillars of implosive architecture. This kind of architecture in context of transcendental overlaps means a possibility of how to bring our anthropogenic environment closer to the natural and harmonic code of the Universe.

Abstract:
The present investigation consists of evaluating and verifying the anti-erosive efficiency of the lining called geomanta and hydroseeding as a replacement for the stone mouthpieces, present in the sewers located on the Lima - Canta highway. The first methodology has a qualitative approach, prepared in the field by collecting data sheets, which describe the characteristics of 30 sewers and the verification of the type of soil. Next, the information collected was processed where 08 culverts were identified that presented erosion problems due to the failure of the mouthpiece, then the design flows were obtained and their sizing was verified. The second methodology presents a quantitative approach, where the velocity and shear stress parameters generated by the flow in the discharge of the sewers were determined; these values were obtained by applying hydraulic models in the HEC-RAS and IBER programs. In order to provide the appropriate solution to ensure the stability of the structure, the values of speeds and shear stress obtained were compared with the resistance provided by the hole and the geomanta. The results allow to determine that the emboquillado does not present an adequate resistance for the protection in the discharge of the sewers to the middle slope. Finally, the use of geomatting and hydroseeding is recommended for the protection of steep slopes where culverts discharge, instead of troughs which do not present adequate resistance to the speeds and shear stresses produced by the water flow.
Tesis

Contrary to the latter, geopolymers are synthesized at room temperature, thus significantly reducing the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. Moreover, the composition and synthesis reactions can be tailored to adjust the setting time of the material as well as its compressive mechanical strength. It is then possible to produce geopolymeric cements with short setting times and high compressive strength, although relatively brittle. The objective of the present study was to produce and characterize composite materials by reinforcing fastsetting geopolymeric matrixes with polypropylene geosynthetics (geomats and geotextiles) in an attempt to improve the toughness and tensile strength of the cementing material. Geosynthetics have been increasingly used to reinforce engineering structures, providing higher strength and better toughness. In particular, polypropylene nonwoven and geomats depict other attractive properties such as low density, durability, impact absorption and resistance to abrasion. Fast-setting geopolymers were then synthesized and reinforced with polypropylene nonwoven and geomats. The mechanical strength of the materials, reinforced or not, was characterized. The results showed that relatively short setting times and adequate flowing behavior were achieved by adjusting the composition of the geopolymer. In addition, it is possible to improve the fracture resistance of geopolymeric cements by adding polypropylene geosynthetics. The best results were achieved by reinforcing geopolymer with polypropylene TNT
“I became a wanderer, making long journeys to mining districts, so that I could learn by observation the nature of metals,” writes Albertus Magnus in his treatise De Mineralibus.1 Perhaps it was then that he asked so “assiduously in different parts of the world” after a complete text of the Lapidary of Aristotle, a work he only knew through excerpts.2 Albert’s hardships testify to his commitment to the rigors of natural science (physica), the evidentiary standards of which are higher than for astrology or magic, draw as he still does from those lesser authorities.3 But Albert has his limits, being quick to demarcate between science and divinatory practices of geomancy, necromancy, and so on—all “nonsensomancy” [garamantia], as he likes to call it.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how Taiwan’s written media justified the state’s introduction of funeral reforms in the second half of the twentieth century. Situating this case study within the broader sociopolitical context of contemporary Taiwan, it illustrates how discourse analysis can be used as a tool for studying change. The state-led reforms induced changes in a field in which religious rituals play an important role, as state authorities operated with priorities differing from ritual practice. Instead, they were concerned with measures for land saving and popularized practices such as cremation or natural burials. The discourse analysis reveals that the justifications brought forward for reforms appeared with a high degree of consistency starting from the late 1970s in Taiwanese press articles. Following Michel Foucault’s understanding of discursive formations, four sub-formations can be distinguished, which all have in common that they are aimed at problematizing ritual practices prevalent at funerals. These sub-formations consisted of considerations concerning the quantitative limits of available cemetery land for graves, arguments referring to the economic advantages of cremation, articulations of the ideal of green cemeteries designed in a park-like fashion, and a critique of geomancy in labeling it superstitious. The discursive voices emerging in the sub-formations were state and local authorities, as well as experts and journalists commenting on reform measures. These priorities and justifications for reforms appeared to be incompatible with religious funeral rituals and are analyzed as changes in terms of a secularization process of Taiwan’s funerary practice. An important finding is that the secular reform measures were, to a large extent, inspired by similar reforms in other regions in the world, and are as such part of a global pattern.

Abstract:
Numerous sensors have been deployed in different geospatial locations to continuously and cooperatively monitor the surrounding environment, such as the air quality. These sensors generate multiple geo-sensory time series, with spatial correlations between their readings. Forecasting geo-sensory time series is of great importance yet very challenging as it is affected by many complex factors, i.e., dynamic spatio-temporal correlations and external factors. In this paper, we predict the readings of a geo-sensor over several future hours by using a multi-level attention-based recurrent neural network that considers multiple sensors' readings, meteorological data, and spatial data. More specifically, our model consists of two major parts: 1) a multi-level attention mechanism to model the dynamic spatio-temporal dependencies. 2) a general fusion module to incorporate the external factors from different domains. Experiments on two types of real-world datasets, viz., air quality data and water quality data, demonstrate that our method outperforms nine baseline methods.
