Ellis, Eugenia Victoria. "SQUARING THE CIRCLE: The Regulating Lines of Claude Bragdon's Theosophic Architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26491.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, squaring the circle has been about bringing the incommensurable work of the gods within the realm of the commensurate by using infinite cosmic principles to regulate the finite world. The American architect Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) squared the circle using his Theosophic architectural theory that was based on a neo-Pythagorean emphasis on Number, which he believed to have contained the secret of the universe. America at the turn of the 20th century was interested in Eastern spirituality at the beginning of an age of scientific relativity when the world and universe were being questioned due to new scientific discoveries based on higher-dimensional mathematical speculations that challenged relationships between humankind and the cosmos. Paralleling this scientific search was the Western conquest of the world on earth, which brought back speculations about the Near and Far East, including translations of their ancient scriptures and encyclopedias of their architecture. The fourth dimension was an imaginary mathematical (re)creation of great interest to Bragdon and common to scientific relativity and Eastern spirituality; two cultural constructs that altered the perception of time and space to affect the American imagination and architectural production. Within this context, Squaring the Circle investigates the relationship of theory to practice by considering Bragdonâ s architecture as the material manifestation of his Theosophic architectural theory.
Ph. Abstract:
The Fa divination system, in Benin Republic, integrates ancestral knowledge and occupies a central place in the culture of southern Benin, combining oral transmission and resilience in the face of external influences. Our research examines how this system, marked by its ritual objects and practices, preserves and transmits its symbolic knowledge from generation to generation in an oral culture, while assimilating elements of geomancy from scriptural civilizations such as Islamic or Persian. Thanks to an interdisciplinary approach, our study highlights the transmission and adaptation mechanisms specific to Fa. The analysis of narratives from Fon and Yoruba corpora, combined with an exploration of symbolic salience strategies and morphosyntactic structures, reveals the ingenuity of the system in making complex knowledge memorable. This process of oral resilience, which integrates both cultural influences and modern innovations, is distinguished by an active transformation of the geomantic heritage that allows Fa to adapt to current realities without losing its essence.Among the notable results, the study demonstrates that symbolic salience, with its marked characters and contrasts, facilitates memorization. In addition, oral structures in the form of tables in divinatory verses show a capacity for logical organization without resorting to writing, illustrating a capacity for complex analysis specific to orality. This cultural and cognitive resistance, supported by ritual objects that serve as mnemonic and symbolic supports, highlights a system that renews itself while preserving the continuity of its knowledge. Thus, Fa appears not only as a divinatory system, but also as a rich and resilient cognitive model. Through its ability to integrate societal and technological changes, it maintains a strong cohesion between past and present, demonstrating that traditions, far from fading under the effect of modernity, can be transformed to remain significant

Abstract:
The Feng shui brings together the knowledge of the Chinese on the notions of time, space, environment and all the building infrastructures. It is indeed Feng shui has guided, from its "coming" almost all the buildings constructed for the living and for the dead in China. Modern ecology and environmental protection are the top priorities to be considered in architectural design. Faced with the idea transmitted by the Feng shui, we can’t help thinking that such ancient discipline, very focused on the environment and housing, can serve as a reference and inspiration in the design of contemporary architecture and treatment of the environment. The basic question of this research is to know what was, or what were, the true (s) source (s) of the doctrine of Feng shui. Through our research, we want to take a step back to the multitude of methods of Feng Shui, and intended to fully concentrate on their cross philosophy, and try to synthesize the different approaches that can have globally of the Feng shui. We have found two major "red threads" of Feng shui .First thread: the "qi 气" is the basic material of the composition of the world. Second thread: Temporality and action of Heaven understood as an impersonal power and instructing exerted on the world through natural regularities. This research is in order to build a research facility on the topic of "the application of Feng Shui in contemporary architectural and environment design" and we hope that this first step will be considered important to the continued reflection

Abstract:
This thesis deals with complex processes, relationships and phenomena which go beyond the assumed and accepted materialistic perception of the world in general and the process of architectural design specifically. It clarifies and actually redefine the sustainability from a point of higher universal principles forming our environment. At the beginning this thesis presents an extensive knowledge base of existing holistic design systems including Feng-shui, sacred geometry, geomancy or numerology. The purpose is to build and establish a solid foundation for understanding and further research as well as objectively interpreting lesser known topics as a whole. On the basis of intersecting information through the above mentioned topics we specify the hypothesis which proposes the pre-existence of one unifying design matrix of harmonic structures in architecture. The structure of its verification takes us from an analysis of the science of human perception to systems of self-similar contextual references of animated and inanimated forms. These systems of emergent form and flow are basically known as fractals, and could be expressed in both mathematical and geometrical languages. The thesis research then consists of analysing chosen examples of urban and architectural scale in sense of fractality, symbolism and geometrical matrices. We include and integrate the research of associated and relevant phenomena in pedagogical practice, and a case study of the application of fractals in development of a chosen town. From the results of this thesis we abstract five non-dogmatic guidelines or tenets for architectural design; which are supported by experimental verification on some of the author´s buildings. These tenets stand as pillars of implosive architecture. This kind of architecture in context of transcendental overlaps means a possibility of how to bring our anthropogenic environment closer to the natural and harmonic code of the Universe.

Abstract:
The present investigation consists of evaluating and verifying the anti-erosive efficiency of the lining called geomanta and hydroseeding as a replacement for the stone mouthpieces, present in the sewers located on the Lima - Canta highway. The first methodology has a qualitative approach, prepared in the field by collecting data sheets, which describe the characteristics of 30 sewers and the verification of the type of soil. Next, the information collected was processed where 08 culverts were identified that presented erosion problems due to the failure of the mouthpiece, then the design flows were obtained and their sizing was verified. The second methodology presents a quantitative approach, where the velocity and shear stress parameters generated by the flow in the discharge of the sewers were determined; these values were obtained by applying hydraulic models in the HEC-RAS and IBER programs. In order to provide the appropriate solution to ensure the stability of the structure, the values of speeds and shear stress obtained were compared with the resistance provided by the hole and the geomanta. The results allow to determine that the emboquillado does not present an adequate resistance for the protection in the discharge of the sewers to the middle slope. Finally, the use of geomatting and hydroseeding is recommended for the protection of steep slopes where culverts discharge, instead of troughs which do not present adequate resistance to the speeds and shear stresses produced by the water flow.
Tesis

Contrary to the latter, geopolymers are synthesized at room temperature, thus significantly reducing the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. Moreover, the composition and synthesis reactions can be tailored to adjust the setting time of the material as well as its compressive mechanical strength. It is then possible to produce geopolymeric cements with short setting times and high compressive strength, although relatively brittle. The objective of the present study was to produce and characterize composite materials by reinforcing fastsetting geopolymeric matrixes with polypropylene geosynthetics (geomats and geotextiles) in an attempt to improve the toughness and tensile strength of the cementing material. Geosynthetics have been increasingly used to reinforce engineering structures, providing higher strength and better toughness. In particular, polypropylene nonwoven and geomats depict other attractive properties such as low density, durability, impact absorption and resistance to abrasion. Fast-setting geopolymers were then synthesized and reinforced with polypropylene nonwoven and geomats. The mechanical strength of the materials, reinforced or not, was characterized. The results showed that relatively short setting times and adequate flowing behavior were achieved by adjusting the composition of the geopolymer. In addition, it is possible to improve the fracture resistance of geopolymeric cements by adding polypropylene geosynthetics. The best results were achieved by reinforcing geopolymer with polypropylene TNT

102
Fung Shui is one of the cultural essences of the Chinese for thousands of years. It is a culture confirmed several times, leaving a lot of authentic treasures. Some are great masterpieces others are legendary stories. Geomancy is knowledge that belonged to the ancient emperors and literali. Some of them built massive constructions according to Geomancy, such as the Emperor Temple in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The others constructed housings or shrines of wealthy and famous families, such as Wufung Lin Family Garden. Majestic buildings can provide the places of worshipping the dead, something common folks cannot reach. However, due to Taiwan’s economic flight in the last thirty years, houses and constructions were built as fast as ever. Prosperity in common peoples’ lives gave rise to their awareness in Fung Shui. Meanwhile, the knowledge passed from China to Hong Kong, then from Hong Kong to Taiwan (This means that the reason why the skills of Geography (山), traditional Chinese medical science (醫), fortune-telling (命), divination (卜), specialty for appearance (相) are so common), with its increasing influence. In the past thirty years, Fung Shui spread along with economic growth through the whole island. The sight of people counting “Chinese Era” (combination of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) can be commonly seen in the streets of Taiwanese society. The research centers the architecture of modern Taiwan. The traits of building, such as the scene of it, the interior design within, and the sizes and directions of the water running of the streams outside the houses, all maters the destiny of the house and its owner. Whether there is good view of the landscape, or the mountains seen in front creates the proper line, or the mountain line behind creates the best shape, or the arrangement of those in the two sides can reinforce the Qi-field of the house, are all research targets of Fung Shui and Geomancy. The construction arrangement of a house simply matters closely with the peace and wealth of the residents. With the principles of the geography ancient and modern, the legacy of old and late masters, the lectures of masters nowadays, and actual experience personally, have come to search the truth of the operation on the universe, so can bring benefits to people and society, and common good.

91
The subject of this thesis intends to examine carefully the application of Chinese Geomancy (Feng-shui) on site planning (the placement of modern buildings or the site selections for architecture or cities). Through the geomantic ideas in Yih-Jing, whose main thoughts like as Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, the Eight Diagrams, Li-Chi, I would like to explain the site selections for architecture and cities and the arrangement of towns and cities. By the process and analysis of interpreting the principles of geomantic operation and the multiple pictures, diagrams, song, mantras and poems, this thesis aims to clarify the superstition and the ambiguous understanding of Geomantic system, to disclose the confusing concepts, to establish the norm of modern geomancy. Besides , it is to combine the ideas of modern architecture, furthermore, and to make the ancient concept useful. However, the dualism of science and superstition borne in geomancy has made this study encountering many barriers. Although there are numerous records in Feng shui literature, in addition to their features, voluminous, mixturous, difficult and chaotic, it’s extremely difficult to find the papers in the academically level and to understand some very profound mantras. The mauvais pas is just like the Chinese saying : “riding a horse in the wildemess and rowing a boat amidst the open sea.” How to make the mysterious materials comprehensible with the flowing writing style and with the peaceful and freedom spirit is my difficult task. Hopefully, this paper will be not only my precious treasure, but also could be the reference for the posterity.

Abstract:
101
Theories of Geomancy & Feng Shui are the cumulative life experiences of ancient Chinese; they have long history and are part of important traditional customs. They are profound eastern philosophy, including thinking model with in-depth and precise system. They are based on I Ching’s “harmony between man and nature” as the core, and emphasize the harmony between human beings and nature. Theories of geomancy & Feng Shui, such as Ying Yang & the Five Elements, Eight Trigrams and concepts, imply the techniques and methods of system operation, including the rich and complicated thoughts of China, in the past 5000 years. Thus, for buildings in Taiwan, geomancy & Feng Shui are applied in arrangement of villages, construction of cities, site selection, planning, design and even the construction of Ying and Yang houses, which can be demonstrated by the existing old cities and towns, old buildings, tombs and private housing. Thus, geomancy & Feng Shui, in fact, are the general natural science combining architecture, geography, meteorology, ecology, environment, and even aesthetics and psychology. This study explores the relationship between geomancy & Feng Shui and profits and fortune of enterprises and individuals. By literature review, data collection, case study and interview, this study clarifies the superstition and myth of geomancy & Feng Shui in the past. It also generalizes the arrangement and technique for fortune in geomancy & Feng Shui, and constructs the operational principles to combine geomancy & Feng Shui with modern architecture in order to establish academic model of modern Feng Shui, and develop modern application by ancient techniques. The findings can serve as references for enterprises and individuals to select sites and directions of buildings of Ying and Yang houses.

By taking three real cases, we examined whether clients’ fortune was changed after we implied geomancy onto the housing environment. The research period is from 2013 to 2018. In the first two cases, the clients just changed the location of seats without taking huge construction. The purpose of changing the location of seats is to increase the harmony among colleague and then to improve their performance. In the third case, the client wanted to design the spaces for housing and for working. Over the discussion with owner, I considered geomancy into the space design. The purposes of this design are to increase harmony among family members, to improve health, and to make business be successful. For doing this study, we studied these three cases and discussed with these three clients. Then we have the following conclusions. First, even we only changed the location of seats for managers and assistants, not taking huge construction, we can improve client’s performance. Second, we not only changed the location of seats, but also slightly took construction, we can improve client’s performance. Third, we planned a full piece of land and signed the space for housing and working. When client stands in front of house, there is a wide yard in front of house, mountain is at the back of house. After client moved into this new house, his business performance improved by 30%. We concluded that there is no 100% perfect design of land or house. However, if geomancy master can fully discuss with clients and understand what they need in business or in health, the master aims to to redesign the direction of office or house, and then help clients pursue their life purpose. The purpose of geomancy is to help people living with nature.

Abstract:

We use a Lu-Pan home Feng-Shui quantization and assessment service to verify the system''s feasibility. The implementation environment consists of two servers, each equipped with three KVM virtual machines to accept requests for the single-entry front-end server, which is responsible for service allocation as well as source monitoring. Experimental results show that the system is able to immediately initiate the backup mechanism when a system fault occurs under the 100ms network card monitoring mode. When customer requirements change, this system is also able to effectively balance service requests by switching virtual machines, thereby achieving the effect of load balancing.

Abstract:
86
Wuhsing Geomancy is used to be the most powerful methodology of the building site selection to pursue good fortunes and shun the course of calamity. The purpose of this study is to research the ancient book "Ching Chiao Cheng Ti Li Hsin Su" which seemed to be officially published by the Soon/Chin Dynasty Goverment(A.D.1192). The preliminary objective is to search for any operational Wuhsing Geomancy system contained in the book, and the ultimate purpose is to find out the idelogy concerning the good and bad omens as well as the spatial consideration. From this particular angle it is tried to reconstruct and explain the tradtional Chinese concepts of living space and structure. At the beginning the author consolidated those good fortunes and bad calamity standards into frames such as the conditions of the resident, pure geomancy standards, judged from the environmental conditions, the interactions between the residential building orientation and the surrounding geography, and good and bad fortune due to the residence building design itself. According to the above frames the author proceeded the analysis orderly, and procured the idea that the universe is consisted of the five elements and "Wuhsing" represents that all people belong to one of these five elements, so that ecologically there are conflicts among people, residence, and environment. The ideology of good and bad fortune of Wuhsing Geomancy practitioners is to follow a constant and smooth heaven''s way to judge the good or bad fortune including the principle of five elements rotating control of each other, the rules of rise and fall, as well as the ideal abstractive spatial images such as family order, Yin-Yang and following or against it. Furthermore, these practitioners combine the common principles of judging geomancy selection of building site, and related judgement experiences, and taboos to build up Wuhsing Geomancy building site selection standards. Wuhsing Geomancy selection of residential building environment and designs come grom the mind offear and respect to the nature is consisted of the five elements that is the analytical way of ancient Chinese in explaining the phenomena of the nature. It is obvious that Wuhsing Geomancy has been influenced by the knowledge of universe constructed by Yin-Yang theory and in turn it affected the selection and design of the residential buildings.-1 -aA tentative Reconstruction of the Buildings Site Selection manipulative System on the basis od the Wuhsing Geomancy Couveyed in the Ancient Book "Chung CHiao Cheng Ti Li Hsin Su"

Scuola di Dottorato Scienza e Tecnica “Bernardino Telesio, Ciclo XXVIII,a.a. 2015-2016
The Geomatics techniques for the detection and representation of the land and objects have seen an exceptional development in recent years. The applications are innumerable and range from land planning to geophysics, from mitigation of landslide risk to monitoring of artifacts, from cultural heritage to medicine. With particular regard to the structures and to the land, the technologies used can be divided into three categories: techniques based on the acquisition and processing of images, techniques based on the measurement of angles and distances, and combinations of the foregoing. After an overview of Geomatics techniques and their basic theoretical concepts, a number of aspects have been thoroughly investigated. There follows a series of applications of the techniques described. Finally two new applications for deflection measurement of bridges under dynamic load are presented.
Università della Calabria
