Computing the weighted geometric mean of large sparse matrices is an operation that tends to become rapidly intractable, when the size of the matrices involved grows. However, if we are not interested in the computation of the matrix function itself, but just in that of its product times a vector, the problem turns simpler and there is a chance to solve it even when the matrix mean would actually be impossible to compute. Our interest is motivated by the fact that this calculation has some practical applications, related to the preconditioning of some operators arising in domain decomposition

In this paper we prove structure results for the singular sets of stationary harmonic maps and mean curvature flows local to particular singularities. The original work is contained in Chapter 5 and Chapter 8. Chapters 1-5 are concerned with energy minimising maps and stationary harmonic maps. In chapter two, in vivo 3.0 T MRI data from white matter and grey matter in brain from 4 healthy volunteers was studied using a multi component T₂ relaxation analysis. The goal of this study was to find the dependence of myelin water fraction (MWF), the ratio of water in myelin bilayers to the total water component, with the repetition time of the MR sequence TR. The first part of this work is devoted to basic physical principles, imaging modes, ultrasound probes, biological effects and the last part is associated with the artifact associated with ultrasound waves. In the next part the specific noise called speckle noise is detaily discussed. The description includes both a mathematical and a statistical view. The global loss of biodiversity calls for robust large-scale diversity assessment. Biological diversity is a multi-faceted concept; defined as the “variety of life”, answering questions such as “How much is there?” or more precisely “Have we succeeded in reducing the rate of its decline?” is not straightforward. While various aspects of biodiversity give rise to numerous ways of quantification, we focus on temporal (and spatial) trends and their changes in species diversity. Constant mean curvature planes of finite type in Euclidean 3-space are in correspondence with spectral data, consisting of a hyperelliptic (spectral) curve, two meromorphic differentials, and a line bundle. A class of deformations one can consider are known as Whitham or period preserving deformations.
