ABSTRACT Climate change has long been considered a big problem by many politicians and ordinary people. This change in the world ecosystem has serious effects on world geopolitics in a global sense, as well as its effects on living things on Earth. As the effects of climate change increase in the coming years, it seems inevitable that this will cause major global geopolitical changes, especially in the seas. Undoubtedly, many problems are expected to arise from these changes, such as changes in global trade routes and people forced to migrate due to sea level rise. In addition, the possibility

Abstract:
AbstractThe initiation of military operations by Russia against Ukraine in February 2022 sparked a full-scale war in Europe, impacting the global economy and geopolitical dynamics. This chapter delves into the underlying factors that ignited the conflict, with a particular focus on Russia’s historical inclination towards expansion through warfare, its reliance on resource exports, and military capabilities, and its response to technological changes. The modern world’s decreasing reliance on resources in favour of technological development poses a challenge to resource-rich countries like Russia, leading to efforts to maintain dominance through military aggression. Russia’s economic dependence on resource exports, particularly energy, exacerbates its vulnerability to global market shifts. Understanding the multifaceted drivers of conflict is essential for addressing geopolitical tensions and fostering global stability. Mitigating the risk of future conflicts requires strategic diplomacy, economic diversification, and technological innovation to navigate evolving geopolitical landscapes.

AbstractThe importance of Byzantium to the history of global slavery stems from its geographic and historical position. Byzantium boasts a history of more than a millennium, longer than any other Mediterranean empire. As an offspring of the Roman Empire, it inherited the Roman institution of slavery, which was in constant change in view of the changes that the medieval world underwent. The Byzantine Empire offers an ideal historical environment to examine questions about global slavery, questions that pertain to continuity and change, the destiny of ancient slavery in particular, and thanks to its geopolitical position, also to connectivity between different medieval enslaving societies.

AbstractThis introductory chapter presents an overview and summary of the focus of this edited volume. We first discuss the contribution of the chapters to a more nuanced and novel way of studying geoeconomic dynamics from an IPE perspective as going beyond the classical geopolitical focus on conflict, state-centrism, and security issues. We then embed the volume in broader changes of globalization from the neoliberal era into a more confrontative phase since 2016. The third part of the introduction then interrogates the role of the EU in this changing global order and makes the case for studying this sidelined actor in contemporary discussions about geoeconomics. The fourth and last part introduces the different chapters in detail and lays out the plan of this book.

Abstract:
As the global economy transitions from fossil fuels to renewable energy, the search for ‘critical minerals’ is expanding into the remotest and most extreme environments on Earth, including the icy polar regions at the ends of the earth. This essay discusses how Greenland and Antarctica are at the forefront of geopolitical discussions about resource utilization, environmental conservation and sustainability in an era of rapid climate change. Greenland, a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, sees mining as necessary for economic development, while Antarctica is governed by an international treaty system that currently prohibits mining. A changing climate and shifting geopolitical pressures could force an amendment to the Antarctic Treaty in the not-so-distant future. The essay considers how these two polar regions could shape the future economics and geopolitics of global mineral resources as we move towards a carbon-neutral future.

AbstractThe century-old concept of state sovereignty is acquiring new and hotly debated meaning, due to digital disruption and technology-without-borders, dominance by powerful—often foreign-owned—global tech companies, and cyber-undermining by malicious states. Sovereignty, as we know it, is also threatened by rising geopolitical tensions, war, and global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and global cyber-crime. This chapter deals with the future of sovereignty in a digital and geopolitically contested age. It starts with an introduction into international relations, sovereignty, and strategic autonomy thinking. It reflects on the impact of digital technology on the international system of states. Then the chapter provides an analysis and some practical guidance to tackle the challenges of developing public policy for sovereignty in the digital, and digital humanistic, age. Finally, two case studies and a set of questions invite the reader to a deeper dive.

Abstract In the 21st century, the nexus between climate change and the global gas industry is more resilient. Gas is now preferred to gasoline in mitigating the effects of climate change and key global gas players and new entrants’ race for a higher global market share. To sustain continuous profit on gas investments, sustainable and strategic energy business models are being developed albeit with unintended or intended geopolitical consequences. This paper highlights the probable geopolitical risks, their likely impacts, and regional risk mitigation strategies necessary for sustaining the gro

In the 20 years since the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Shark Specialist Group’s (SSG) first status report (Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras: The Status of the Chondrichthyan Fishes), much has changed for sharks, rays and chimaeras. This report updates our understanding, and the scope of information in its 2,000-odd pages reflects the scale of these two decades of change. The breadth of research topics has expanded, mirroring the inclusion of a greater diversity of species, and attention is being trained on the emerging threats and the accelerating global changes to aquatic ecosystems. The EU faces an unprecedented combination of external threats: Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the growing influences of Russia and China in the EU’s neighbourhood; the repercussions of the Israel-Gaza war; the Union’s economic, energy, and military dependencies and exposure to climate change; the rise of right-wing authoritarianism across many countries in Europe and its neighbourhood; and the uncertainty of the United States

In the realm of gender and conflict, it emphasises the EU's commitment to mainstreaming gender in its peacebuilding efforts in Guatemala. The EU aims to tackle gender-based violence and enhance women's political and economic participation. Despite its clear objectives, there is a level of ambiguity regarding the alignment of these actions with transformative gender principles, particularly regarding indigenous and rural communities in Latin A
