La thèse porte sur les représentations du corps dans la poésie expressionniste allemande et autrichienne avant 1914. Elle s'appuie sur l'œuvre des poètes Jakob Van Hoddis, August Stramm et Georg Trakl. Elle montre que leurs poèmes constituent des réponses à un même problème fondamental au début du XXe siècle : la remise en question du langage et de sa capacité à représenter le réel. Le thème du corps permet de mener une étude transversale qui situe ces œuvres dans un même cadre : le début de la modernité littéraire. Il cristallise en effet les principales ruptures du début du XXe siècle, tant sur le plan de l'expérience concrète du quotidien, que sur les plans de l'esthétique et de l'histoire des idées (vitalisme, psychanalyse). L'homme redéfinit le sujet, son rapport au monde, sa démarche vis-à-vis du sens et de l'œuvre d'art. La quantité et la variété des images du corps dans les œuvres expressionnistes témoignent du bouleversement du rapport entre subjectivité, environnement et écriture<br>This doctoral thesis deals with the representations of the body in German and Austrian expressionist poetry before 1914. It is based upon the works of the poets Jakob Van Hoddis, August Stramm and Georg Trakl. It shows that their poems represent answers to the same fundamental problem at the beginning of the 20th century – they question the language and its ability to represent reality. The theme of the body allows to make a transversal study which locates this works in a single framework – the beginning of literary modernity. Indeed, it reflects the main ruptures of the beginning of the 20th century, be it on the level of real everyday experience or on the level of aestheticism and of the history of ideas (vitalism, psychoanalysis). Man redefine the subject, its relation to the world, its approach to meaning and the work of art. The quantity and variety of the images of the body in the expressionist works testify to the upheaval of the relationship between subjectivity, environment and writing

Abstract:
This is an analysis of combat operations of US First Army under the command of Courtney Hodges, between August 1 and September 12, 1944, with an emphasis upon 1st, 4th, 9th, and 30th Divisions. However, other formations are necessarily discussed in order to maintain context. Indeed, many historians have failed to emphasize the complex interdependent nature of these efforts, and the traditional narrative has been distorted by inadequate situational awareness. This study argues that the army's operations were exceedingly difficult, resulting in approximately 40,000 casualties over a six week period. Although historians claim that the Germans were essentially defeated by the end of July, and that the Allied advance was subsequently halted by logistical difficulties, the official combat records clarify that logistical shortages were a tertiary factor, as the enemy remained capable of strong resistance. Consequently, defensive efforts were the primary factor hindering the advance, in conjunction with deteriorating weather conditions, rugged terrain, and surprisingly severe traffic congestion. Although this was mobile warfare, military theorists have overestimated the effectiveness of mechanization and underestimated the potential for antitank defenses. Ultimately, this study asserts that First Army was the primary American combat formation, and historians have exaggerated the importance of George Patton's Third Army. Therefore, in order to understand an American way of war, the combat operations of First Army deserve far more attention than they have previously received. This narrative thus emphasizes forgotten battles, including: Tessy, St. Sever, Tete, Perriers, Mayenne, Ranes, Flers, Mace, Elbeuf, Mantes, Corbeil, Sevran, Mons, Cambrai, Philippeville, Dinant, and Aubel.

Parcourus par une veine naturaliste, les romans de george moore, ainsi que certaines de ses nouvelles, font du corps du personnage un element crucial autour duquel s'articulent les principaux themes de sa fiction. Exprimant les tensions issues du dualisme entre la chair et l'esprit, les oeuvres de moore revelent une evolution de la vision du corps et de l'identite, evolution qui transforme egalement les representations du personnage. Notre etude tente d'explorer les textes de cet auteur en prenant pour fil conducteur le theme du corps et les multiples images du corps dans les recits. La fin de l'ere victorienne, la prise de conscience d'une alienation fondamentale de l'individu par la societe et l'industrialisation, les theories de darwin, huxley et spencer, les balbutiements de la psychanalyse, l'avenement de la conception d'un art base sur la science, et la reactivation paradoxale du dualisme chair-esprit - pourtant initialement remis en question par les auteurs realistes et naturalistes -, fournissent un cadre ideal pour une exploration des images ambigues du corps que l'on trouve dans les recits de moore, des contraintes et pesanteurs d'un corps captif d'un reseau de forces sociales et religieuses, mais aussi naturelles. Expressing the tensions springing from the dualism between the flesh and the spirit, moore's works reveal an evolution of the vision of the body and of identity, an evolution which also transforms the representations of the character. Our work tries to explore moore's texts, following as a main thread the theme of the body and the numerous images of the body in the narratives. The end of the victorian period, the new awareness that man is radically alienated by society and industrialism, the theories of darwin, huxley, and spencer, the first hesitant steps of psychoanalysis, the belief in the notion that art should be based on science, and the paradoxical reactivation of the dualism between the flesh and the spirit - which was however initially challenged by realist and naturalistic writers -, provide an ideal frame for an exploration of the ambiguous images of the body we find in moore's narratives, of the constraints and weightiness of a body imprisoned within a network of social, religious, but also natural forces. End of the xixth century, beginning of the xxth century : from the vision of the character in a way + in the twilight ;, doubly alienated as he perpetually wavers between society and nature, torn between the demands of the body and those of the mind, to the vision we find in d. H. Lawrence's fiction for example, to the acceptance of the body and its instincts, to the often anguished but also exalted search for cosmic union, for a mystical return to the bosom of the natural universe, for lightness of being. The body and religion (asceticism, mysticism, hatred of the flesh), the body and society (urban and domestic spaces, social constraints and rituals which mark the body), the body and art (embedded creative processes, characters who, as artists, are confronted with the impossibility to represent the body), the body and nature (ambivalence of the relationships between man and the universe, conflicts and rediscovery - perhaps - of a body linked with desire and instinct), are the main lines on which this study is structured

Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of the nineteenth century journalist George Augustus Sala. Previous studies of Sala have focused upon the biographical aspects of his life at the expense of critical analysis of the prolific contributions he made to newspapers and periodicals. This thesis will readdress this imbalance by a close reading of Sala's visual and textual output together with an examination of the contemporary debates and issues surrounding his work. In particular it will suggest that Sala's journalistic style was a product of the very different mediums he was working in, and how this personal style along with his innovations in form would influence the New Journalism at the end of the century. For so long a misunderstood and neglected figure, this thesis will endeavour to reposition Sala at the centre of nineteenth-century media culture rather than at its margins. My research links Sala's role as an engraver, illustrator, and scene-painter to his career as an essayist for Dickens's Household Words. It will demonstrate how this in turn influenced his experiments with the form of the novel which would impact on his work as the pre-eminent Special Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. In an age of rapid press and cultural transformation my research will highlight Sala's engagement with theories of urban modernity and commodity culture; gambling, finance capitalism and the uncertainty of modern life; the culture of literary bohemia and the plight of the poor and the oppressed; and the role of the journalist. I will pursue Sala's commitment to sensationalism and realism in his novels, and his fluctuating opinions on race, slavery and imperialism in his travel writing. This thesis will also shed light on Sala's relationship with some of the most important journalists, authors, and artists of the nineteenth century – Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, Mary Braddon, WP Frith, Henry Vizetelly, Frederick Greenwood and W.T. Stead. Necessarily interdisciplinary in focus, my research draws on critical work by cultural historians and literary theorists like Tim Barringer, P.D. Edwards, Mary Gluck, Lynda Nead, Deborah Nord, Matthew Rubery, Richard Sennett, Ralph Straus, Catherine Waters and Ruth Yeazell, among others. By examining contemporary periodicals, newspapers and letters this thesis will contribute to the burgeoning field of nineteenth-century print culture, while adding to the knowledge and understanding of the man many considered to be the 'beau-ideal' of a journalist.

De la correspondance échangée entre 1893 et 1945 par George Bernard Shaw et son traducteur français, Augustin Hamon, n'avaient été publiés que quelques fragments. Nous avons entrepris d'en faire connaître la totalité, et on en trouvera les premiers éléments dans notre thèse, ou sont transcrites, annotées et analysées 802 lettres échangées par Shaw et Hamon entre juillet 1893 et la fin de l'année 1913. Le choix de la période prise en compte trouve son origine dans la biographie des deux hommes, mise en parallèle jusqu'aux premiers moments de leur correspondance. On s'attardera plus à l'analyse de la carrière militante d'Hamon. L'examen de ses archives révèle un homme dont la configuration psychologique et culturelle diffère du portrait sommaire qui en est d'ordinaire dressé. Certaines similitudes existentielles, des opinions politiques un temps partagées et une sympathie mutuelle permettent de comprendre pourquoi, à partir de 1904, Hamon fut ordonné traducteur officiel et unique des oeuvres de Shaw et chargé de les faire publier et jouer en France. Les lettres échangées au cours de la période étudiée y sont retranscrites et munies des annotations nécessaires. L'analyse thématique éclaire les difficultés rencontrées par Hamon pour faire publier en France l'oeuvre du dramaturge et imposer le théâtre de celui- ci. Loin d'être le seul responsable de ces échecs répétés, il dut composer avec des éditeurs et directeurs de théâtre et s'efforcer de les convaincre de la pertinence des exigences de Shaw. La mission ainsi confiée à Hamon plaçait ce dernier dans une situation paradoxale vis-à-vis du dramaturge. L'analyse montre que s'était établie entre les deux hommes une relation ambigüe, ou les rapports de domination et la jubilation du pouvoir tenaient un rôle éminent, sans pourtant exclure l'amitié et le respect mutuel. Ce bilan provisoire d'une alliance aux frontières mouvantes nous permet de dresser le portrait contrasté de deux hommes qui, malgré l'abîme social qui les séparait alors, surent s'associer durablement pour influer sur le théâtre de leur temps<br>Only a few fragments of the correspondence exchanged by George Bernard Shaw and Augustin Hamon had been published so far. The 802 letters exchanged by Shaw and Hamon between july 1893 and the end of 1913 are here transcribed, annotated and analysed. The choice of the period originates in the biographies of the two men, paralleled until the early moments of their correspondence. More stress is laid on the militant career of hamon, as the analysis of his archives brings out a fuller personality than the bare sketch commonly given by critics. Biographical similarities, political opinions held in common for a time and sympathy between Hamon and Shaw explain why, as early as 1904, Hamon was appointed sole translator of Shaw's works and entrusted with the task of having them published and performed in France. The letters exchanged during this period are given the necessary annotations and their thematic analysis throws some light on the difficulties met by Hamon as he strove to have Shaw's work published and performed. Far from being the only person to blame for the failure of these performances, he had to compromise with publishers and managers and try and convince them of the judiciousness of shaw's repeated demands. The mission entrusted to Hamon put the latter in a paradoxical position. Their letters show that a rather ambiguous relationship had developed between the two men, though the pleasures of domination did not exclude friendship and mutual respect. This provisional estimate of a fluctuating alliance opens on the contrasted portraits of two men who, though being poles apart, managed to form an enduring association and influence the theatre of their times

Abstract:
This study focuses on a series of late-century works by women writers that incorporate facets of theatrical performance into the printed book. Literary drama was a common genre of the Victorian and Edwardian period, used by writers such as Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, and Matthew Arnold to elevate drama to the status of literature, a term synonymous with the printed page and the experience of reading. However, this project examines a series of women writers who, in contrast, used this hybrid form to challenge the assumed superiority of text. The values ascribed to the printed page—that it was a disembodied enterprise unattached to the whims of its audience or the particularities of its author—were antithetical to the experiences of women writers, whose work was often read in the context of their gendered bodies. My study proceeds chronologically, reading the literary dramas of five writers—George Eliot, Augusta Webster, Katharine Bradley and Edith Emma Cooper (writing under the pseudonym “Michael Field”), and Elizabeth Robins—alongside changes in print practice and theatrical staging as well as evolving discourses about “literariness.” I argue that these women allude to theatrical performance in the text to show that the page always bears the physical traces of its authors and its audience. Each chapter blends book studies with performance studies, showing the way the form of a work invites particular responses from its readers. Overall, this project has two goals: one, to recover marginalized texts by women writers and revise narratives about the period to incorporate these pieces; and two, to span the scholarly chasm between Victorian poetry and drama and demonstrate, instead, the mutually constitutive relationship of these two art forms.

Abstract:
This study investigates and documents tenor/bass trombone solo performances at the Gewandhaus, Leipzig, East Germany, between 1821 and 1876. Included is the discussion of a newly discovered composition, the Concertino fur Bassposaune und Orchester, by Carl Heinrlch Meyer, which is the earliest concerto for the tenor/bass trombone. Its performance at the Gewandhaus in 1821 marked the beginning of the solo tradition for the tenor/bass trombone, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus became one of the leading centers of solo trombone performance for the next fifty years. The study includes background information on the rise of the virtuoso soloist in nineteenth-century Germany. It specifically focuses on Friedrlch August Belcke and Carl Traugott Queisser and their performances at the Gewandhaus. All solo trombone performances at the Gewandhaus in the nineteenth century have been documented, and specific information has been provided regarding the soloists, dates of performances and repertoire performed on the concerts. The paper includes a discussion of performance reviews from the Allgemeine Musfkalische Zeitung. The conclusion discusses the importance of solo trombone performance at the Gewandhaus, and the reason for its sudden decline after 1876.

Scholars have considered the lamps to be imported from Hellenistic Egypt, but careful examination has revealed that the lamps were not imported. The lamps were locally made in Meroë; the materials and technology needed to create bronze lamps were available to Meroitic craftsmen.

La structure de la personnalité du savant est ici déterminante, et nous nous penchons particulièrement sur les remaniements subjectifs dans le cas de grands mathématiciens porteurs d’une structure psychotique. Les parcours de vie de Janos Bolyai, de Georg Cantor, de Kurt Gödel et de John Nash sont approchés selon ce point de vue. Nous nous efforçons de montrer que la place de la mathématique comme sinthome, là où se trouve le Nom-du-Père chez le névrosé, vient favoriser le mathématicien psychotique. La psychose se déclenche lorsque cette suppléance ne peut plus jouer son rôle, c’est à dire lorsqu’elle montre sa défaillance à faire tenir le nœud de la structure<br>The discovery of limits and paradoxes in the field of mathematics or of physics sometimes leads to a “subjective drama of the scientist”, as expressed by Lacan himself. The structure of the scientist’s personality is decisive and we incline overmuch to subjective reorganisations in the case of well-known mathematicians having a psychotic structure. The life of Georg Cantor, Janos Bolyai, Kurt Gödel and John Nash are considered according to this point of view. It is with regard to the neurotic position towards reality that the nature of what favours the psychotic subject in the field of the mathematical creativity can be examined, even if he often pays high price for his own discoveries. This has its beginning attributed to the autodidactic English mathematician George Boole (1815-1864), especially because his books The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847) and An Investigation of the Laws of Thought (1854) are recognized as the inaugural works of the referred branch. However, surprisingly, in the same time another mathematician called Augutus of Morgan (1806-1871) it also published a book, entitled Formal Logic (1847), in defense of the mathematic logic. Even so, times later on this same century, another work named Elements of Logic (1875) it appeared evidencing the Aristotelian logic with Richard Whately (1787-1863), considered the better Aristotelian logical of that time. This way, our research, permeated by the history of the mathematics, it intends to study the logic produced by these submerged personages in the golden age of the mathematics (19th century) to we compare the valid systems in referred period and we clarify the origins of the mathematical logic. For that we looked for to delineate the panorama historical wrapper of this study. We described, shortly, biographical considerations about these three representatives of the logic of the 19th century formed an alliance with the exhibition of their point of view as for the logic to the light of the works mentioned above. In this sense, we aspirated to present considerations about what effective Aristotelian?s logic existed in the period of Boole and De Morgan comparing it with the new emerging logic (the mathematical logic). Besides of this, before the textual analysis of the works mentioned above, we still looked for to confront the systems of Boole and De Morgan for we arrive to the reason because the Boole?s system was considered better and more efficient. Separate of this preponderance we longed to study the flaws verified in the logical system of Boole front to their contemporaries' production, verifying, for example, if they repeated or not. La démarche autobiographique apparaît comme filière d'exploration et de construction personnelle. Sous l'Antiquité Chrétienne, les Confessions de Saint Augustin offrent l'exemple d'un moi qui se place tout entier devant Dieu pour comprendre sa vie. L'écriture renvoie à un ordre de transcendance. A l'Age des Lumières, la question fondamentale n'est plus celle de Dieu, mais celle de l'homme. Jean-Jacques Rousseau fait apparaître l'acte autobiographique comme révélation d'une nature individuelle. Il montre dans ses Confessions comment se réapproprier sa vie. Au XIXe siècle, George Sand dans Histoire de ma vie, Marie d'Agoult dans Mémoires, souvenirs et journaux, cherchent à faire évoluer les moeurs et à réformer l'éducation des filles. Au XXe siècle, les formes littéraires de vécu personnel laissent la place aux histoires de vie. La démarche autobiographique ne s'impose plus comme expression formative mais se constitue en instrument scientifique de formation<br>The autobiographical approach appears as a path to exploration and personal construction. During the Christian Antiquity, the "Confessions" by Saint Augustain offer the example of a self totally turned towards God in order to understand life. Writing recalls transcendence. In the Age of Enlightenment, the fundamental interrogation is not about God but about Man. Jean-Jacques Rousseau makes the autobiographical narrative appears as the revelation of a distinctive person. He explains in his "Confessions" how to take over one's life. In the 19th century, George Sand in "The story of my life" and Marie d'Agoult in her "Memoirs, memories and diaries" try to change people's mores and the education of girls. In the 20th century, the various literary forms taken on by personal experience are replaced by stories of lives. Cette thèse de nature interdisciplinaire a pour objet d’identifier, de décrire et d’analyser la diversité des interactions entre la littérature et les arts plastiques à travers l’œuvre et la figure de l’auteur belge francophone Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949).<p><p>Le propos présente une structure symétrique. Celle-ci va de l’impact de l’image sur l’écriture à l’impact des textes sur la création plastique. La référence littéraire à l’image constitue la première phase de l’enquête. Celle-ci aboutit à la référence plastique à la littérature en passant préalablement par les collaborations effectives entre l’auteur et les artistes sur le plan de la théâtralité et sur celui de l’édition illustrée.<p><p>Un dépouillement des archives conservées tant en Belgique qu’à l’étranger a permis d’inscrire la lecture des œuvres dans le cadre d’une trame factuelle précise et fondée en termes d’exactitude historique.<p><p>Première partie. De l’image au texte. Le musée imaginaire de Maurice Maeterlinck<p><p>C’est en se référant à Bruegel l’Ancien que Maeterlinck publie le Massacre des Innocents en 1885. Ce conte de jeunesse, stratégiquement signé « Mooris » Maeterlinck, se revendique clairement d’une origine flamande à connotation bruegelienne. Régulièrement réédité du vivant de l’auteur, il a contribué à fixer les traits de Maeterlinck en fils des peintres flamands. Pour les critiques d’époque, l’œuvre de Maeterlinck trouverait son originalité dans la peinture flamande dont elle est la fille. Campant Maeterlinck en auteur « germanique » par son origine flamande, certains spécialistes s’appuient encore sur ce postulat à caractère tainien. D’autres commentateurs ont pris le parti de ne pas prolonger ce point de vue, mais plutôt d’en interroger les causes profondes. C’est à Paul Aron que revient le mérite d’avoir fait apparaître, dans un article fondateur, le caractère stratégique de cette référence à la peinture flamande dans les lettres belges .Il convenait d’élargir au-delà du seul conte de 1886 l’enquête sur la réception maeterlinckienne de la peinture flamande. On s’aperçoit alors que le Massacre des Innocents est loin d’être le seul Bruegel l’Ancien que Maeterlinck comptait exploiter à des fins littéraires. On s’aperçoit également que le peintre de la Parabole des aveugles est loin d’être le seul peintre flamand auquel Maeterlinck se réfère. C’est pourquoi nous avons entrepris de définir précisément, et de façon exhaustive, les limites du champ maeterlinckien en matière de peinture ancienne. Pour ce faire, nous avons inventorié l’ensemble des occurrences plastiques clairement identifiables dans les archives (lettres et carnets), dans les textes publiés ainsi que dans les interviews. Ce travail de compilation a révélé en effet que la réception maeterlinckienne de la peinture dépasse largement le cadre de l’art flamand des XVe et XVIe siècles. Renaissance italienne, Préraphaélisme, Réalisme et Symbolisme sont les principaux mouvements picturaux qui composent les salles du musée imaginaire de Maeterlinck. <p><p>Deuxième partie. Texte et image I. Les décors de l’indicible. Maeterlinck et la scénographie<p><p>Cette expérience de l’image, Maeterlinck va la mettre à profit lorsque ses drames seront appelés à connaître l’épreuve de la scène. Car dès lors qu’elle est transposée du livre à l’espace de jeu, l’œuvre dramatique cesse d’être exclusivement littéraire. Elle est alors faite de lumière, de corps en mouvement, de matière… Il est pour le moins paradoxal que l’apparition de ce répertoire coïncide avec une méfiance vis à vis du spectacle de théâtre. Très vite Maeterlinck cherche à définir les modalités de la mise en scène. Au fil de quelques articles, il élabore une pensée théâtrale qui participe pleinement au débat ouvert sur la question dans les revues littéraires par des auteurs comme Stéphane Mallarmé, Albert Mockel, ou Pierre Quillard, pour ne citer que quelques noms. Le décor est un point central de ce débat qui consacre l’émergence de la fonction moderne accordée à l’aspect visuel d’un spectacle de théâtre. Ce n’est pas pour rien si la conception des décors est désormais confiée non plus à des décorateurs de métier, mais à des peintres. L’expression de « tableau vivant » dont use Maeterlinck pour qualifier la métamorphose du texte par la scène indique bien le lien qui se tisse, selon lui, entre image scénique et peinture. Certaines œuvres, notamment préraphaélites, servent d’ailleurs de source pour la conception de scènes, de décors et de costumes. Maeterlinck ne s’est pas privé de donner son opinion personnelle sur le travail de préparation de mises en scène, notamment dans les spectacles de Paul Fort, de Lugné-Poe et de Constantin Stanislavski.<p><p>Troisième partie. Texte et image II. Des cimaises en papier. Maeterlinck et l’édition illustrée<p><p>Il est significatif que le renouvellement de la théâtralité soit exactement contemporain d’une recherche sur le livre comme objet et sur la page comme support. On pourrait dire que la scénographie est à la scène ce que l’illustration est à la page. La critique maeterlinckienne ignore tout, ou à peu près, de la position prise par Maeterlinck à l’égard du support de la littérature. Il faut bien admettre que le poète des Serres chaudes n’a pas développé sur le livre illustré une pensée qui soit comparable à ce qu’il a fait pour le théâtre. De ce fait, le dépouillement des archives s’est avéré indispensable. Il a permis de mettre à jour la place prise par Maeterlinck dans l’élaboration de l’aspect plastique de l’édition de ses textes.<p><p>Sensible à ce qui, dans le langage, échappe à l’emprise de la parole au point de mettre en œuvre une dramaturgie fondée sur le silence, Maeterlinck s’est très tôt intéressé aux formes de communication non verbale en jeu au sein d’une production littéraire. Cet intérêt répond à une volonté d’émanciper l’écriture du logocentrisme de la culture française dont Maeterlinck a livré une critique radicale dans un carnet de note que l’historiographie a retenu sous le nom de Cahier bleu. L’homme de lettres s’est ainsi interrogé dès le milieu des années 1880 sur les effets de sens qui peuvent survenir de la part visuelle inhérente à l’édition d’un texte. L’émergence du symbolisme correspond ainsi à une redéfinition du support même de la littérature. Par l’encre qui lui donne corps et par la typographie qui trace les limites, le mot apparaît à Maeterlinck comme une forme dont la page-image magnifie la valeur plastique. Fort se s’être essayé, dans le secret des archives, à l’écriture d’une poésie visuelle enrichie par un réseau de lignes dont le tracé répondrait au contenu du texte, Maeterlinck va développer une esthétique de la couverture qu’il va appliquer dans le cadre de l’édition originale de ses premiers volumes. Dans ce contexte d’exaltation des données plastiques du livre, l’image va constituer un paramètre majeur. Résultant d’une collaboration étroite avec des illustrateurs qui sont d’abord peintre (Charles Doudelet, Auguste Donnay) ou sculpteur (George Minne), les éditions originales illustrées publiées par Maeterlinck apparaissent aujourd’hui comme des événements marquants dans l’histoire du livre en Belgique. Dépouillée des attributions descriptives qui avaient assimilé l’image au commentaire visuel redondant du texte, l’illustration est ici conçue à rebours des mots auxquels elle renvoie. Le tournant du siècle constitue une jonction dans le rapport de Maeterlinck à l’édition illustrée. Participant pleinement au phénomène d’internationalisation des lettres belges autour de 1900, Maeterlinck privilégie l’édition courante et réserve à la librairie de luxe et aux sociétés de bibliophiles le soin de rééditer dans des matériaux somptueux les versions illustrées de ses textes. Le Théâtre publié par Deman en 1902 avec des frontispices d’Auguste Donnay constitue la première expression de ce goût marqué pour les formes les plus raffinées du livre. <p><p>Quatrième partie. Du texte à l’image. La réception de l’œuvre de Maeterlinck dans les milieux artistiques<p><p>De telles interactions n’ont pu avoir lieu sans l’existence de facteurs externes de type socio-économique. Elles se déroulent en effet dans des lieux (les salons, par exemple) et des institutions (comme les maisons d’édition) mis sur pied par une société performante économiquement et qui, grâce à la dynamique culturelle d’une phalange d’intellectuels esthètes, peut désormais se donner les moyens nécessaires à l’affirmation de la Belgique comme scène active dans le courant d’émulation esthétique et intellectuelle qui traverse l’Europe de la fin du XIXe siècle. La critique s’est attachée au poète de Serres chaudes comme un homme sinon isolé dans une tour d’ivoire, à tout le moins retiré dans une campagne lointaine. Généralement présenté comme l’arpenteur des sommets de la mystique flamande, des mystères préraphaélites, des romantiques allemands et de Shakespeare, Maeterlinck aurait vécu en dehors des contingences de son temps. L’auteur a lui-même contribué à construire ce mythe de l’écrivain solitaire et du penseur reclus. Le dépouillement de ses archives montre à l’évidence qu’il faut nuancer cette lecture dépourvue de finesse. Cette réévaluation de la place de l’homme de lettres dans la société pose la question de la réception de l’œuvre, dans le cas qui nous occupe, par les milieux artistiques. La dernière partie de la thèse inverse donc la question posée dans la première. Si l’incidence de l’iconographie ancienne sur la production littéraire a fait l’objet de commentaires stimulants, inversement, l’analyse de l’impact de la littérature sur la création plastique demeure réduite à quelques cas célèbres comme les peintres Nabis ou Fernand Khnopff. Pour développer cette problématique, il s’est avéré indispensable d’aborder la visibilité de l’œuvre en fonction des réseaux fréquentés par l’homme de lettres. La quatrième et dernière partie tente de répondre à la question de savoir dans quelle mesure le réseau relationnel de Maeterlinck et les voies de diffusion empruntées par son œuvre ont induit ou pas la création plastique. De ce point de vue, la réception de Maeterlinck en Allemagne et en Autriche constitue un cas d’école. Etrangère à toute implication directe de l’auteur, la réception artistique de l’œuvre de Maeterlinck forme un corpus d’œuvres que nous avons étudié en le superposant à l’architecture interne de la bibliographie.<p><p>Projeté au devant de la scène par l’article fameux d’Octave Mirbeau, Maeterlinck rechigne les apparitions publiques. Si l’auteur est pleinement inscrit dans les lieux de sociabilité de la vie littéraire, il reste que l’homme fuit les interviews et délègue à l’image le soin d’assurer la visibilité de sa personne :les portraits de Maeterlinck se multiplient dans les revues au point de former un corpus significatif que la critique maeterlinckienne n’a jusqu’ici pas ou peu abordé. Conscient de l’impact stratégique de l’image qu’un écrivain donne de lui, Maeterlinck souscrit au rituel de la pose. S’il est difficile d’apporter des précisions sur la part prise par l’écrivain dans la composition des portraits, il n’en demeure pas moins que l’homme se met en scène à rebours d’une prise de vue instantanée. Face à l’objectif, il prépare méthodiquement la transformation de sa personne en image. A la césure du siècle, plusieurs pictorialistes américains (Holland Day, Coburn et Steichen) ont conçu des portraits de Maeterlinck. C’est par ce biais que l’auteur belge a été amené à rédiger un texte sur la photographie. <p><p>Destiné au numéro inaugural de la fameuse revue Camera Work animée par Alfred Stieglitz, ces pages soulignent le caractère esthétique dont les pictorialistes ont teinté la photographie. Pour Maeterlinck, la photographie relève du domaine de la création artistique puisqu’il n’est désormais plus tant question de fixer les apparences du réel que d’en livrer une image dominée par la pensée et le savoir-faire. Gagné par la foi recouvrée dans les forces de la nature typique de l’optimisme qui touche la littérature au début du XXe siècle, Maeterlinck souligne que l’acte photographique est lié à l’intervention des « forces naturelles qui remplissent la terre et le ciel ». Et l’homme de lettres de préciser :« Voilà bien des années que le soleil nous avait révélé qu’il pouvait reproduire les traits des êtres et des choses beaucoup plus vite que nos crayons et nos fusains. Mais il paraissait n’opérer que pour son propre compte et sa propre satisfaction. L’homme devait se borner à constater et à fixer le travail de la lumière impersonnelle et indifférente ». Abstract:
This thesis offers a contrastive analysis of the notion of definiteness as conveyed by the system of the article in English and Standard Arabic. Definiteness and other notions associated with it are investigated semantically and syntactically in an attempt to discover how these two languages approach such notions and when the two languages converge and diverge in this respect. To this end, corpus analysis is chosen as a means to inspect these ideas. The corpus, The Brook Kerith, by the Irish writer, George Moore, is chosen for geo-historical and literary reasons: the story takes place in the Holy Land at the dawn of this Christian era. A contrastive analysis of the first chapter along with its translation is analyzed from a pragmatic and semantic perspective. The analysis is followed by statistical and computational analyses. It is found that the article "the" and the Arabic article "al' are used for seemingly the same purpose in the proportion of 76%. The occurrence of the article "a/an" is 96% consistent with indefiniteness in Arabic. However, the use of the "zero article" shows discrepancy as whether to use the article "al" or no article in Arabic. In the last analysis, the cognitive operations underlying usage in both languages are similar. The differences are on the level of the semiotic transformation of these deep operations.

Abstract:
From the viewpoint of classical reception studies, I am asking what contemporary British art (by, for example, Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst, and Mark Wallinger) has to do with the classical tradition – both the art and literature of Greco-Roman antiquity. I have conducted face-to-face interviews with some of the leading artists working in Britain today, including Lucas, Hirst, Wallinger, Marc Quinn, and Gilbert & George. In addition to contemporary art, the thesis focuses on Greco-Roman art and on myths and modes of looking that have come to shape the western art historical tradition – seeking to offer a different perspective on them from that of the Renaissance and neoclassicism. The thesis concentrates on the generation of artists known as the YBAs, or Young British Artists, who came to prominence in the 1990s. These artists are not renowned for their deference to the classical tradition, and are widely regarded as having turned their backs on classical art and its legacies. The introduction asks whether their work, which has received little scholarly attention, might be productively reassessed from the perspective of classical reception studies. It argues that while their work no longer subscribes to a traditional understanding of classical ‘influence’, it continues to depend – for its power and provocativeness – on classical concepts of figuration, realism, and the basic nature of art. Without claiming that the work of the YBAs is classical or classicizing, the thesis sets out to challenge the assumption that their work has nothing to do with ancient art, or that it fails to conform to ancient understandings of what art is. In order to do this, the thesis analyses contemporary works of art through three classical ‘lenses’. Each lens allows contemporary art to be examined in the context of a longer history. The first lens is the concept of realism, as seen in artistic and literary explorations of the relationship between art and life. This chapter uses the myth of Pygmalion’s statue as a way of thinking about contemporary art’s continued engagement with ideas of mimesis and the ‘real’ which were theorised and debated in antiquity. The second lens is corporeal fragmentation, as evidenced by the broken condition of ancient statues, the popular theme of dismemberment in western art, and the fragmentary body in contemporary art. The final chapter focuses on the figurative plaster cast, arguing that contemporary art continues to invoke and reinvent the long tradition of plaster reproductions of ancient statues and bodies. Through each of these ‘lenses’, I argue that contemporary art remains linked, both in form and meaning, to the classical past – often in ways which go beyond the stated intentions of an artist. Contemporary art continues to be informed by ideas and processes that were theorised and practised in the classical world; indeed, it is these ideas and processes that make it deserving of the art label.

Obschon die Bestände der Bibliotheca Augusta in weiten Teilen gut erforscht sind, ist die vox librorum der spanischen Drucke im Bestand des Herzogs bislang noch nicht wirklich erhört worden, was zur Folge hat, dass die Hispanica Guelpherbytana im Rahmen der vorliegenden Studie erstmals vollständig erschlossen und unter der Fragestellung der Bedeutung des Bestandes für den spanisch-deutschen Kulturtransfer im Siglo de Oro, welcher bislang von der Forschung ungeachtet der vielversprechenden Ansätze der Kulturtransferforschung ebenso wenig beachtet worden ist, erstmals systematisch untersucht wird. Zu diesem Zweck ist der gesamte Buchbestand, den Herzog August in seiner mehrere Dekaden währenden Sammelleidenschaft aufzubauen vermochte, auf der Grundlage einer eigens entwickelten Definition auf ebendiese spanischen Titel hin untersucht und ausgehend davon ein 1695 Titel umfassendes Untersuchungskorpus angelegt worden, wodurch einer der bedeutendsten frühneuzeitlichen geschlossenen spanischen Buchbestände außerhalb Spaniens zugleich erstmalig für weiterführende Forschungen zugänglich und nutzbar gemacht wird. Im Spiegel der bisher vorliegenden Erträge zur Theoriebildung der noch jungen Kulturtransferforschung umfasst die Studie zu Kulturtransferprozessen (nicht nur) zwischen Spanien und der herzoglichen Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel im Wesentlichen drei Komponenten. Es handelt sich um die Erwerbungskonjunkturen der importierten Artefakte, das zugrundeliegende Netzwerk in der Peripherie der Bibliothek und schließlich die hermeneutischen Funktionsverlagerungen der nach Wolfenbüttel transferierten Drucke. In Bezug auf die Akzessionskonjunkturen sind für die vorliegende Studie die Eintragungen im Bücherradkatalog, welche es erlauben, einen konkreten Erwerbungszeitraum für die Titel im herzoglichen Buchbestand zu konturieren, für sämtliche Titel des Bestandes ermittelt und ausgewertet worden, wodurch nun erstmals die sukzessive Erweiterung des spanischen Bestandes über Jahrzehnte hinweg nachvollzogen werden kann. Als Grundlage für die Aufarbeitung des Netzwerkes hingegen gereichten einerseits die Korrespondenzen von Herzog August mit seinen verschiedenen Agenten, die über mehrere Städte in ganz Europa verteilt waren und oftmals maßgeblichen Anteil an der Akzession einzelner Titel oder gar von ganzen Bibliotheken für die herzogliche Sammlung hatten. Anderseits werden durch die systematische Untersuchung sämtlicher Titel des Korpus auf Lesespuren erstmals die konkreten Transferwege, welche die Bücher im Rahmen dieser Vermittlungsprozesse beschritten, rekonstruiert und ausgewertet. Anhand der Untersuchung der Neustrukturierungen der spanischen Drucke im deutschen Zielkontext bietet die Studie darüber hinaus erstmals konkrete Einblicke in die Rezeption dieser spanischen Schriften, welche vor allem im Umkreis der Fruchtbringenden Gesellschaft ihren Niederschlag fand. Abgesehen von Herzog August, der im Jahr 1634 in die bedeutendste deutsche Sprachgesellschaft der Frühen Neuzeit aufgenommen wurde, beschäftigten sich insbesondere die beiden Mitglieder Georg Philipp Harsdörffer und Johann Michael Moscherosch, die zudem beide Kontakte zu Herzog August in Wolfenbüttel unterhielten, dezidiert mit spanischer Literatur. Hinzu kommen weitere Gesellschaftsmitglieder, die in einigen Fällen heutzutage fast vollständig in Vergessenheit geraten sind und dennoch durch ihre teils umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit der blühenden spanischen Literaturproduktion des Siglo de Oro eine bislang lediglich im Ansatz beschriebene Pionierfunktion hinsichtlich der frühen Aufnahme und Verbreitung von spanischen Kulturgütern im deutschen Zielkontext haben. Die skizzierten Funktionsverlagerungen werden dabei vor allem anhand von Harsdörffers und Moscheroschs Import und Implementierung der Schriften von Francisco de Quevedo, Miguel de Cervantes und Lope de Vega untersucht, da es sich bei diesen Bezugnahmen zweifelsfrei um die ausführlichsten und facettenreichsten Auseinandersetzungen mit der spanischen Literatur des Goldenen Zeitalters handelt.

Abstract:
Born in London in 1791, George Augustus Middleton attended Cambridge University but failed to graduate. Ordained priest for the Colonies in 1819, he arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, in January 1820 and shortly after commenced work as Assistant Chaplain at Parramatta in the role of locum tenens for the Reverend Samuel Marsden. In 1821 he was appointed to the convict settlement of Newcastle, where, over the ensuing five and a half years he found himself in constant conflict with both the military and ecclesiastical authorities because of his perceived absenteesim and his agricultural dealings. His conflict with the Commandant of Newcastle, Major James Morisset, originated from his perceived interference in, and condemnation of, Morisset’s disregard for the Sabbath and Christian morality. Relations between the two men broke down completely and Middleton found himself criticised from the Governor down and very much isolated. In 1825, Archdeacon Thomas Hobbes Scott, a former secretary to Sir Thomas Bigge during Bigge’s enquiry into the state of New South Wales, arrived in Sydney and commenced the first structural organisation of the antipodean Anglican Church. Almost immediately relations between Scott and Middleton deteriorated to the point where, in 1827, Middleton resigned and moved to his land grant at Paterson, about 70 kilometres from Newcastle. Scholars since then have incorrectly seen the main cause of their conflict as Middleton’s perceived absenteeism, unaware that far greater differences existed. To Scott, Middleton was an incompetent administrator, a lax pastor and unfit for ministry. After resigning, Middleton acted as a pastor, farmer, Justice of the Peace and community member until 1832, when, forced by drought, he moved to Sydney where he established a school by which to support himself and his family. In 1836, William Grant Broughton, formerly the Archdeacon of Australia, and later the first and only Bishop of Australia, returned from England, and in 1837, licensed Middleton to the parish of Butterwick and Seaham. My dissertation, "Renovating the Closet : Nineteenth-Century Closet Drama Written by Women as a Stage for Social Critique," contributes to a new understanding about nineteenth-century closet drama through three distinct and innovative texts: George Eliot's The Spanish Gypsy (1868), Michael Field's Stephania (1892), and Augusta Webster's A Woman Sold (1867). I contend that these three women writers employed the closet drama, a genre written in dramatic form but intended to be privately read or performed, to critique the social, cultural, and ideological limitations placed upon women of their time. In their symbolic use of the genre and innovative experiments with form, Eliot, Field, and Webster created a new stage on which their female protagonists challenge belief systems, institutions, and conventions that confine their gender roles, sexual identity, and social power. My chapter, "'Angel of the Homeless Tribe' : The Legacy of The Spanish Gypsy," shows how George Eliot melds the conventions of epic narrative with those of Victorian closet drama and reveals a dynamic connection between the character development and genre. Eliot's canonical novels are famous for their indictment of the limited roles Victorian culture offered to women. Equally famous are the tragic destinies of her rebellious heroines: they end up dead, unfulfilled, or virtually imprisoned. But scholars have failed to notice that in her experiment with The Spanish Gypsy, Eliot created a female epic: Fedalma, a woman of fifteenth-century Spain, becomes the leader of her "Gypsy" nation, sung into the future by an admiring bard. Eliot's formal experiment makes The Spanish Gypsy an important text for understanding how genre shaped gender representation in Eliot's canon, and in Victorian literature generally. My chapter, "'Something of His Manhood Falls' : Stephania as Critique of Victorian Male Aesthetics and Masculinity," offers Stephania as Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper's commentary on the predominantly-male Aesthetic and Decadent movements of the 1890s. Through the pseudonym Michael Field, Bradley and Cooper wrote their way into, and claimed their own space inside, a very exclusive males-only closet. The chapter demonstrates how Stephania, set in Rome 1002 A.D., reclaims agency for a Victorian artistic "sisterhood" adulterated and exiled by a "brotherhood" of male Decadents (who saw woman as a nemesis to social order, personal salvation, and creative production), both through its form, and its cast of three: Stephania, Emperor Otho, and his old tutor Gerbert. Stephania, a former Empress turned courtesan bent on revenge for her husband's murder, challenges homosocial exclusivity and ultimately triumphs as a symbolic queen and emperor. Successful in her plan to bring down Otho through her seduction and manipulation of both men, Stephania is redeemed and saved; she has restored social order. In its resistance of the boundaries and expectations of the closet drama genre, Stephania projects a new ideology for Victorian womanhood and female authorship. My last chapter, "'I Could Be Tempted' : The Ev(e)olution of the Angel in the House in A Woman Sold," presents A Woman Sold as an early example of Augusta Webster's strategic social rhetoric, as her use of the closet drama acts as a structural metaphor for the sociomythological confinement of the nineteenth-century middle class woman. I investigate how A Woman Sold exposes the notion that marriage for nineteenth-century middle class women symbolized a closet of social and cultural paralysis, as grown from a history of socially and culturally institutionalized gender expectations. At the same time, I demonstrate how Webster employs irony through a nexus of genre, narrative, and form to support and advocate for opportunities outside marriage that encourage female agency to develop. Essentially, the fundamental argument in this dissertation hinges on the ways in which Eliot, Field, and Webster revised the conventional closet drama to renovate and, in turn, reveal the metaphorical and literal closets that confined social and cultural possibilities for nineteenth-century women.<br>text
