The Sykes-Picot agreement is the foremost example of Western double-dealing in the Middle East since the discovery of oil. The agreement, formalized in an exchange of notes between the British Foreign Secretary and the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom in London, is named after its principal negotiators Sir Mark Sykes (1879-1919) and Georges-Picot (1870-1951). As one of several overlapping arrangements affecting the postwar settlement in West Asia secretly negotiated during the First World War, the agreement provided for the division of the region into spheres of influence comprised of n

ABSTRACTThe article seeks to establish the significance of intercepted Greek diplomatic messages as both historical source and catalyst in Britain's Near Eastern policy in the crucial years of 1920–2. Specifically, the intercepts reveal how members of the British government, foremost among them the prime minister, covertly supported Greek expansion in Asia Minor even after declaring neutrality in the conflict. Such evidence confirms rumours that were dismissed as fallacious by those implicated and by their defenders in later historiography. Aside from their value as historical sources, the interce

The history of 19th century nursing reforms has focussed almost entirely on the activities and lives of nurse leaders, to the exclusion of the ordinary nurses. The lives of such nurses at one London hospital, St George's, have been investigated using a methodology based on prosopographical techniques. It was found that by the end of the century, far from becoming the exclusive preserve of middle class women, as some historians have argued, the Nursing Department at this particular hospital had become a melting pot of social classes. The prevalence of adolescent self-harm is higher in the community compared with self-harm monitored through service use, as only a minority of young people seek help. There has been limited longitudinal community-based research on adolescent self-harm, particularly in ethnic minorities. It examines Jewish East London in the period from 1903 to the end of the First World War and is based on original archival research. It argues that this period saw the emergence of a new form of racialized biopolitical citizenship, which was normalized in the "state of emergency" that was the war. This citizenship was framed by the imperial context, was based on singular 1e1it her/or" identities and was defined against the figure of alien. The thes

This thesis offers a re-reading of the cultural history of East London's working class by focusing on the culture of food. During the 19th century, published reports by philanthropists and investigative journalists such as Jack London (People of the Abyss) tended to portray the East End as a locus of deprivation and immorality where starvation was rife, food was substandard, and ignorance perpetuated a poor diet. Challenges to such perspectives went largely overlooked, and the myth of the bad East End was consolidated. Academic and popular historians such as William Fishman (East End 1888) and

Quality of service becomes the main avenue that could be used to gain sustainable competitive advantage. This is due to the fact that the environment within which organisations operate continues to change with respect to customer expectations. The financial sector, in particular the banking industry is not left behind and players in this industry also strive to “up their game” in the competitive market-place. It has become increasingly important for organisations to find ways, not only to reach the top, but to maintain on-going long-term relationship with their customers. This can result in lo

AbstractThis chapter furthers the previous chapter’s exploration of dismemberment. It builds on Georges Braque’s notion of ‘manual space’ (Danchev, Georges Braque: A Life. London: Hamish Hamilton, 2005, 88) and Katherine Rowe’s ‘unexpected clutch’ and ‘mortmain control’ (1999) to examine the idea of independent agency and shifting discourses of power in the Gothic. This crystallises in an exploration of the image of the disembodied hand in La Belle et la Bête (Cocteau, 1946) and Wuthering Heights (Wyler, 1939), which present memory as disruptive and a threat to the sanity of the characters.
