Abstract:

Abstract:
<p><em>A recent biography and re-issue of George H. Mead’s Mind, Self, and Society emphasize the emergent meanings of his work and of self’s cognitive and affective dimensions in interaction. Erving Goffman likewise posits an interaction order based on individual and social identity. Mead’s metaphor of fusion furthers recognition of an emotional merging of selves with each other and with emerging community. He initially characterizes this experience as “precious” and illustrates its presence in interactional domains such as teamwork, religion, and patriotism. Among other scholars, Charles Taylor uses fusion to interpret aspects of the contemporary secular age. Application to terrorist identities finds that emotional fusion motivates actions that threaten the moral imperative informing presentation of selves that grounds public order. From a pragmatic perspective, selves in pluralistic contexts must subordinate emotional fusion to functional fusion within an interaction order that fosters a larger self and more inclusive community to address common issues.

Abstract:

Abstract:
<em>Abstract</em>.—Recent modeling indicates that increased exploitation on nonnative flathead catfish <em>Pylodictis olivaris</em> may be an avenue for native species recovery. Flathead catfish were illegally introduced into the Satilla River, Georgia, and negative impacts have occurred on native fishes. In an effort to aid in the restoration of native fish on the Satilla River, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources initiated an intensive electrofishing removal effort. In this study, we evaluated the changes in flathead catfish total mortality, condition, and size structure from those efforts. From 2007 to 2009, 13,472 flathead catfish totaling 19,337 kg were removed along a 129-km stretch of the Satilla River. The population size structure changed substantially from containing many large individuals (59% 510 mm total length [TL]) in 2007 to mainly small fish (79% 356 mm TL) by 2009. Total biomass per effort declined from 57.05 kg/h in 2007 to 19.96 kg/h in 2009. Mean individual weight of fish removed decreased from 2.64 kg in 2007 to 1.32 kg in 2008 to 0.61 kg in 2009. Population age structure was also truncated, but there was evidence for higher recruitment and earlier maturation, which would require that intensive harvest be maintained to prevent the population from rebuilding within 2–5 years. Catch-curves revealed increasing total annual mortality rates of 37, 48 and 52%, for 2007–2009, respectively. Considering the life history of the flathead catfish, being a long-lived species that presumably cannot withstand excessive rates of exploitation (i.e., greater than 25% exploitation), our results indicated that an electrofishing removal program is a reasonable management option for areas where this apex predator has been introduced, but continual removal may be required to maintain low biomass.

Abstract:
<em>Abstract.</em>—Data are lacking for shark nursery grounds along Georgia’s coast that would be useful in development of species-specific fishery management plans. The purpose of this survey was to describe the use of Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, Georgia as nursery grounds for sharks. Relative abundance, length–frequency distribution, spatial and temporal occurrence, and feeding habits were determined for Atlantic sharpnose sharks <em>Rhizoprionodon terraenovae </em>(<EM>N </EM>= 305), blacktip sharks <em>Carcharhinus limbatus </em>(<EM>N </EM>= 65), finetooth sharks <em>C. isodon </em>(<EM>N </EM>= 38), and bonnetheads <em>Sphyrna tiburo </em>(<EM>N </EM>= 16) from 35 trammel net collections during June–August 1997. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Atlantic sharpnose sharks (26.4 sharks/h) was significantly higher than CPUE of blacktip sharks (5.6 sharks/h), finetooth sharks (3.3 sharks/h), and bonnetheads (1.4 sharks/h) for the entire study. Atlantic sharpnose sharks were significantly more abundant in early July (81.8 sharks/h) than in other periods in the summer season. In general, the trend of relative abundance (CPUE) for each species was higher in July than other months. All species occurred throughout most of the sampling area except in upper Duplin River for blacktip and finetooth sharks and middle Duplin River for finetooth sharks. Mean CPUE of Atlantic sharpnose sharks was significantly higher than CPUE of all other species in Doboy Sound and CPUE of finetooth sharks and bonnetheads in lower Duplin River. Blacktip sharks (7.6 sharks/h) were significantly more abundant than bonnetheads (0.3 sharks/h) in Doboy Sound. Water temperature and salinity during capture were 25–32°C and 22–31 parts per thousand (ppt) for Atlantic sharpnose sharks, 22–31°C and 22– 26 ppt for blacktip sharks, 25–30°C and 22–26 ppt for finetooth sharks, and 23–30°C and 23–26 ppt for bonnetheads. Atlantic sharpnose, blacktip, and finetooth sharks were mostly represented by young-of-the-year (YOY) individuals. A qualitative analysis of stomach contents suggested that teleosts formed the majority of the diet for blacktip and finetooth sharks, a variety of prey items, including teleosts, penaeids, stomatopods, cephalopods, and brachyurans for Atlantic sharpnose sharks, and exclusively crustaceans, particularly blue crabs <em>Callinectes sapidus</em>, for bonnetheads. The length–frequency distribution and occurrence of YOY- and juvenile-sized individuals feeding on a variety of prey common to the estuary indicates the use of this estuarine system as primary and secondary nursery grounds for Atlantic sharpnose, blacktip, and finetooth sharks and as a secondary nursery ground for bonnetheads during the summer of 1997.

Abstract:
The rapid expansion of e-business witnessed in the late 1990s was nothing short of a spectacle. It seemed that almost everyone was talking about it, and every firm was eager to invest in it, hoping to take away a slice of the pie. Andy Grove, chairman of Intel Corp, stated in 1998: “Within 5 years, all companies will be Internet companies or they would not be companies” (Intel, 2000). Merely mentioning of the “e” word could mean multi-million dollars. The case at hand was Zapata Corp., a fish oil processing company, co-founded by former U.S. President George H. W. Bush. The company announced on December 23, 1998 that it would transform itself into an Internet portal to compete with Yahoo!, Lycos, and alike. Immediately following the announcement, Zapata’s stock price skyrocketed nearly 100% from 7.19 to 14.25 with trading volume at more than 2,000% higher than normal, according to Yahoo! Finance. Academic researchers rushed in and concluded that “a new economy was born.” The potential benefits of e-business are well documented by academic researchers and practitioners alike (InternetWeek, 2000/2001; Phan, 2003). Organizations that integrate e-business applications, such as shared online database and Internet-based reporting in their business processes, can lead to reduced cost, increased efficiency and profitability, and better customer relationship management. Perhaps one of the most significant contributions of e-business applications is its abilities to directly bring sellers and buyers together with little middleman’s interventions. Although the advantages of e-business exist in theory, little empirical work has been done to confirm them.

Abstract:
The turbulence natural convection boundary layer inside a infinite vertical channel with differentially heated walls is analyzed based on a similarity solution methodology. The differences between mean temperature and velocity profiles in a boundary layer along a vertical flat plate and in a channel flow, make it necessary to introduce new sets of scaling parameters. In the limit as H* → ∞, two distinctive parts are considered: an outer region which dominates the core of the flow and inner constant heat flux region close to the walls. The proper inner scaling velocity is showed to be determined by the outer parameters due to momentum integral. The theory is contrasted with the one suggested by George & Capp (1), the deficiencies of which are identified.
