AbstractSince the publication of the In Memoriam of Stefan George in “Understanding and Believing. Essays by Jochim Wach edited by Joseph Kitagawa” (1968), the George-circle is seen as a major source for Wach's understanding of religion. According to the author nature is not a realm of abstract laws but the place where the divine reveals itself in the physical. Yet the In Memoriam was not composed by Wach, but by Gerardus van der Leeuw in 1934 and happend, by chance, to find its way among the posthumous papers of Wach. From other statements we know that Wach rejected pagan conceptions of the epiphany of the divine. Nevertheless there exists an impact of the George-circle on Wach's sociology of religion. He was an early reader of Max Webers “Sociology of Religion (Types of Religious Communities)” (1921/22), in which Weber chose as perspective a growing disenchantment of the world. Wach adopted the typology, but rejected Weber's systematics. The reason can be found in his essay on the relationship between Master and Disciple from 1925. Here he analyzed the George-circle as a case in point that the charisma of a master possesses a metaphysical quality that is resistant against the power of disenchantment. In contrast to Weber who correlated the varieties of religious communities with social conditions, Wach studied them as variations of genuine religious expressions.

Fluxus, an artistic movement that emerged in 1960, crossed borders within the arts. Soon it expanded to include sculpture, poetry, performance, photography, and cinema, taking on a multi-disciplinary character that regularly crossed or erased borders within the arts. Its relationship to architecture, however, is more complex. In the 1960s, a few architects sought to resolve contradictions between the principles of Fluxus and the presumptions of their own field, and explored the possibilities of change —flux— in architectural practice. This article will investigate possible connections between Fluxus and the architectural practices. It considers three figures who were both theorists and architects: Georges Maciunas, Shadrach Woods and Joachim Pfeufer. Their practices, considered together, form what in this article I coin “fluxarchitecture”.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, within a variety of spheres, individual personalities referred to as ‘masters’ were venerated in quasi-religious terms. As a result, treatises relevant to the theme of the ‘master’ were written which had a major impact on subsequent scholarship, particularly in the sociology of knowledge and religion. Inspired by the poet Stefan George and taking his circle as a model, Max Weber, Max Scheler, and Joachim Wach published important works that enlisted religious and cultural historical approaches as well as social theory on topics like community building, the transference of knowledge, religious specialism, and charisma. These studies attest to a pronounced fascination with the phenomenon of the ‘master,’ which the present article investigates with reference to selected publications by the aforementioned scholars.

Schüddekopf (1960), Fritz Stern (1961), Hans-Joachim Schwierskott (1962), and Kurt Sontheimer (1962), shadowed by Armin Mohler's Die konservative Revolution in Deutschland 1918–1932. Grundriβ ihrer Weltanschauungen (1950)—soon to be joined by George Mosse (1964), Herman Lebovics (1969), and Walter Struve (1973). At this stage, with the exception of Fritz K. Ringer's The Decline of the German Mandarins (1967) and Reinhard Bollmus's study of Alfred Rosenberg's office and its opponents (1970), there was virtually nothing taking a broader social or institutional approach to the contexts of Nazi ideology and the sociology of knowledge under the Third Reich. Gerhard Kratzsch's Kunstwart und Dürerbund. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Gebildeten im Zeitalter des Imperialismus (1969) stood very much alone as a nuanced, archivally researched case study alive to the complex ambivalences of cultural nationalism in the Wilhelmine years.

AbstractDespite the abundance of lore about Joachim Wach's lifelong passion for literature, music, and other arts, the pertinence of his aesthetic reflections to his formation as historian of religions is often ignored or under-appreciated. Yet his involvement with the Kreis surrounding the poet Stefan George was perhaps one of the chief early factors that led Wach to liken the study of the history of religions to contemplation of literature and the arts. It is even possible that ideas of the literary historian Friedrich Gundolf about the relationship between the artist and the artist's work helped stimulate Wach's early thinking about the relationship between religious experience and the theoretical, practical, and institutional expressions of that experience. Indeed, throughout his own scholarly writings Wach displays an irrepressible tendency toward combining religionswissenschaflich theorizing with aesthetic reflection, and toward encompassing literary, musical, and other artistic examples within the scope of data to be considered by scholars of religion. This article analyzes the development of that tendency in Wach's scholarship, paying special attention finally to his notion of the modern Western "emancipation of art" from religious influence. This notion, while reflecting a general optimism that characterizes his view of the diversifying, developmental course of numerous other religious and cultural phenomena over time, may ultimately be too strong or reductive for describing what has actually occurred over the past several centuries in the relation between artistic and religious phenomena.

In the past decade the eighteenth-century London music publisher John Walsh has been subject to a new evaluation with regard to his pirated editions and deliberate misattributions, especially of the music of George Frideric Handel. That Walsh's attributions were anything but trustworthy had already been recognized in the eighteenth century: a surviving copy (London, British Library, BM g.74.d) of his first edition of the Sonates pour un traversiere un violon ou hautbois con basso continuo composées par G. F. Handel (c.1730), which, as Donald Burrows and Terence Best have shown, was provided with a title-page designed to simulate that of Jeanne Roger, bears the manuscript inscription ‘NB This is not Mr. Handel's’ in an eighteenth-century hand at the beginning of the tenth and twelfth sonatas, precisely those that Walsh removed in his second edition of this collection (c. 1731–2), advertised on the title-page as being ‘more Corect [sic] than the former Edition’. In the second edition Walsh substituted two equally questionable works in their place, each of which bears the handwritten inscription ‘Not Mr. Handel's Solo’ in a copy in the British Library (BM g.74.h). Two of the sonatas attributed to Handel in Walsh's Six Solos, Four for a German Flute and a Bass and Two for a Violin with a Thorough Bass … Composed by Mr Handel, Sigr Geminiani, Sigr Somis, Sigr Brivio (1730; in A minor and B minor) are also possibly spurious, while three of the four movements of the remaining sonata attributed to Handel in this collection (in E minor) are movements arranged from his other instrumental works. And in 1734 Johann Joachim Quantz, to whom Walsh devoted four volumes of solo sonatas (1730–44), complained of the publication of spurious and corrupted works:There has been printed in London and in Amsterdam under the name of the [present] author, but without his knowledge, 12 sonatas for the transverse flute and bass divided into two books. I am obliged to advertise to the public that only the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth [sonatas] from the first book, and the first three from the second book, are his [Quantz's] compositions; and that he furthermore wrote them years ago, and besides they have, due to the negligence of the copyist or the printer, gross errors including the omission of entire bars, and that he does not sanction the printing of a collection that has no relationship with the present publication that he sets before the public.

In der Fürstlich zu Bentheim-Tecklenburgischen Musikbibliothek Rheda (D-RH) ist unter der Signatur Ms. 945 ein Stimmensatz eines anonymen Duetts mit dem Textanfang "Magst du mich denn gar nicht lieben?" überliefert. Bisher lag die Identität des Duetts komplett im Dunkeln. Es konnte aber festgestellt werden, dass der Text mit einem Duett aus Georg Philipp Telemanns Oper "Das Ende der babylonischen Monarchie oder Belsazer" (TVWV 21:11) nach dem Libretto von Joachim Beccau übereinstimmt.

In the present article I examine the extant horoscopes of three kings of Hungary, Ladislaus the Posthumous (1440–1457), his successor, Matthias Corvinus (1458–1490), and Louis II (1516–1526). Several of these horoscopes were little used by or completely unknown to modern historians, and a systematic treatment of them was a desiderata in the Hungarian scholarship for a long time. Although when examining sixteenth-century geniture collections the exact source and transmission history of a single horoscope is often difficult to reconstruct, in some cases the source of nativity horoscopes can be traced back from Johannes Kepler through Paul Eber, Georg Joachim Rheticus, Philipp Melanchthon and Johannes Schöner to Johannes Regiomontanus and Georg von Peuerbach.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is one of the most frequent reasons for the higher mortality in patients with schizophrenia. It is difficult to separate between effects of medication or the disorder itself on the development of MetS. In the present study, patients at clinical high risk for first-episode psychosis (CHR) were examined and the prevalence of the MetS was assessed. One hundred and sixty-three unmedicated antipsychotic naïve CHR patients aged between 18 and 42 years and suffering from unmanifested prodromal symptoms were compared to 35,869 patients of the “German Metabolic and Cardiovascular Risk Study” (GEMCAS). We observed a slightly higher prevalence of single MetS criteria in CHR group compared to the GEMCAS sample, in particular: high blood pressure (35.0 vs. 28.0%), waist circumference (17.6 vs. 15.1%), and high fasting blood glucose (9.4 vs. 4.0%). Renowned as an eminent Neutestamentler throughout the world, with his works translated into many languages, a Symposium was held at the University in Göttingen in October 2019 to celebrate Jeremias’s life and scholarship on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his death. With contributions reflecting the breadth of his thinking and the depth of the affection in which he is still held, this particular contribution focussed on the Anglophone significance of Jeremias’s work not only as a Biblical scholar, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the world of the Bible, but also to his sometimes indirect but significant contribution to the work of the ecumenical movement and the formation of clergy.

Der Artikel schließt an die Debatte an, die sich seit den 80er Jahren um die Frage der Chorgröße bei Bach und daraus folgenden Konsequenzen für die heutige Aufführungspraxis dreht. Dabei ist das Anliegen weniger eine Parteinahme innerhalb der Diskussion als eine Erweiterung des zeitlichen Kontextes. So werden die Organisationsprinzipien der Thomaner-"Chöre" von der Frühzeit bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein ergründet. Dabei werden Kontinuitäten wie Brüche benannt und der Versuch unternommen, bisher unklare Begrifflichkeiten wie "Chorus", "Coetus" oder "Cantorey" schärfer voneinander abzugrenzen. Als Quellen werden das Album Alumnorum Thomanorum für die Zeit 1730-1800 sowie Rechnungshefte und -bücher vom 17. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert berücksichtigt. Aus diesen neu in die Diskussion eingebrachten sowie bereits bekannten Quellen werden Folgerungen zur Systematik, den Organisationsprinzipien und Einnahmequellen sowie personellen und strukturellen Zusammenhängen zwischen den einzelnen Ensembles der Thomasschule gezogen. Der Anhang liefert dazu unter anderem eine Umschrift und Übersetzung der Regeln für die "Concentores" der Thomas-"Cantoreyen" von 1634 und 1723.

Georg Joachim Rheticus (1514-1574) was central to the development and popularization of Copernicus' heliocentric theory. He is most well known for the first published account of the theory, the Narratio Prima in 1539, and his persuasion in obtaining Copernicus' manuscript for publication, De Revolutionibus (1543). Rheticus' poem 'Concerning the Beer of Breslau and the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac', written circa 1542, sheds light on two aspects of Rheticus' early involvement with the heliocentric theory. The poem helps us understand the approach to astrology which would prove decisive in Rheticus' acceptance of the heliocentric theory and offers a glimpse into Rheticus' association with Wittenberg's controversial group of young poets. This relationship significantly injured Rheticus' career and the heliocentric theory in turn.

The turn of the nineteenth century saw the publication of an abundance of travel narratives and texts in natural history written by maskilic Jews in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German in Hebrew characters. Several of these were maskilic translations of German children's books such as Georg Christian Raff'sNaturgeschichte für Kinderor Joachim Heinrich Campe's travel stories for children. Others were fragmentary translations of German science books such as Anton Friedrich Büsching'sNeue Erdbeschreibung. These translations were inspired by the maskilim's desire to acculturate their fellow Jews according to the standards of the European “high culture” of their time. The scientific, geographical, and philosophical knowledge offered by the source texts, combined with the rhetoric of voyage and discovery, as well as the stories of domesticating and acculturating “savage” peoples and wild animals, provided the maskilim with a compelling platform for disseminating maskilic knowledge, ideology, and goals.

Neste artigo, proponho a aproximação do poema “Engführung” (1958), do poeta Paul Celan, com o ensaio Cascas (2011 [2017]), do historiador de arte francês Georges Didi-Huberman, tomando como ponto de partida a ideia de percurso que atravessa ambas as obras. Para tanto, baseio-me nas leituras que Joachim Seng faz do poema de Celan (1992; 1998), nas quais lê “Engführung” como um trajeto do eu-poético pelo campo de concentração (Auschwitz) que é, ao mesmo tempo, campo da memória e linguagem. Em Cascas, Didi-Huberman relata o percurso da sua visita a Auschwitz, enfocando o papel do olhar na realização do trabalho da memória. Nesse sentido, ao posicionar lado a lado o poema e o ensaio, estes parecem apontar para modos de olhar e dizer Auschwitz que colocam para o leitor as tensões inerentes a este movimento, não se omitem desta tarefa ética e refletem criticamente a postura individual e coletiva diante da lacuna do testemunho e do que resta do campo de concentração.

Anhand des von 1720 bis 1729 wirkenden Neukirchen-Musikdirektors Georg Balthasar Schott wird gezeigt, dass Ermittlungen zu Kollegen Johann Sebastian Bachs überraschende Einblicke in das damalige Leipziger Musikleben liefern können, die ihrerseits wieder zu einem besseren Verständnis von Bachs eigenem Wirken beitragen und zuweilen auch die Hintergründe eines bachschen Werks erhellen. Zunächst wird die Biographie Schotts dargestellt. Danach steht sein Wirken als Komponist für die Neukirche im Vordergrund. Sodann gilt das Interesse seinem Collegium musicum und dem dort aufgeführten Repertoire, speziell einem unter der Leitung Schotts aufgeführten, bisher unbekannten Oratorium. Dies erweist sich als Schlüssel, um die Entstehungsumstände von Bachs "Geburtstagskantate" für den Fürsten Johann August von Anhalt-Zerbst (BC G 13) aufzuklären. Die Bewertung von Mendelssohns Klavierbegleitungen zu Bach'schen Werken für Solovioline geschah bisher vor allem anhand der Chaconne aus BWV 1004 . Dagegen stand das Preludio E-Dur aus BWV 1006 dahinter zurück. Zwar war die Bearbeitung zur Entstehungszeit nachweislich ebenso beliebt wie die der Chaconne, blieb jedoch ungedruckt. Der Artikel berichtet von vorhandenen Abschriften besonders im Besitz Joseph Joachims und belegbaren Aufführungen. Die Betrachtung der musikalischen Faktur wird insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund von Bachs eigener Verwendung der Musik aus BWV 1006 in der Kantate BWV 29/1 Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir und Schumanns Bearbeitungen Bach'scher Violinwerke vorgenommen. Dazu wird weiterhin Mendelssohns besondere Kenntnis von Bachs Werk in die Überlegungen einbezogen. Ein Anhang mit Notenbeispielen vervollständigt den Artikel.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar a importância do matemático Rheticus para o desenvolvimento das tabelas das seis funções trigonométricas clássicas e relacionar as ideias presentes em sua obra Canon Doutrinae Triangulorum (1551) com as ensinadas na educação básica, o estudo faz parte de resultados de uma tese doutoral, em andamento. Para cumprir o objetivo elencado enfatizamos a pesquisa de aspectos sobre a trajetória pessoal e profissional do matemático que o tenham influenciado para o desenvolvimento do tema, sendo assim, utilizamos uma ferramenta disponibilizada por Mendes e Chaquiam (2016) que propõe a construção e uma história baseada na história da humanidade em que o matemático ou o tema está inserido em um contexto, com destaque aos personagens contemporâneos, que, direta ou indiretamente, o tenham influenciado; consideramos um relato sobre o matemático principal, a evolução do tema e os respectivos personagens que contribuíram para essa evolução. A partir dessa análise histórica, destacamos que o matemático Rheticus sofreu influência do Renascimento e Reforma Protestante, e que os personagens Lutero, Copérnico e Schoner foram os principais contemporâneos de Rheticus, que ajudaram a elucidar suas ideias. Alguns resultados apontam que as tabelas desenvolvidas por Rheticus no Canon podem ser aproveitadas em sala de aula para o ensino das razões trigonométricas na educação básica, na qual podemos determinar o seno, cosseno, tangente e as demais razões inversas de ângulos, além dos notáveis (30º, 45º e 60º), e explorando o mesmo conceito que Rheticus utilizou de ângulos complementares, encontrar os valores das razões de ângulos acima dos 45º.

Die Autorin gibt den gesamten Text wieder. Sie datiert die Handschrift und versucht sie im Folgenden mit einem der beiden aus der betreffenden Zeit bekannten Leipziger Collegia in Verbindung zu bringen. Auch die Interpretation des Manuskripts als Hinweis auf ein bisher unbekanntes Leipziger Collegium Musicum wird diskutiert.

Abstract In this contribution, we will discuss two German fencing manuscripts - Mscr.Dresd.C.13 (SLUB Dresden) and Add MS 17533 (BL London). Both manuscripts present texts on thrust-fencing based on the teachings of Salvator Fabris. The dedication of manuscript C13 was signed by the famous fencing author Johann Georg Pascha. The author of one of the texts contained in the 17533 manuscript is named H.A.V.. A textual analysis has been performed on these two books, and then the contents of the works have been compared. This comparison shows that C13 presents a largely identical text to the main treatises contained in 17533, the most significant difference being certain additions in C13, which Pascha also discusses in his dedication. Based on our analysis, both C13 and 17533 appear to present copies of an original text. We further hypothesize that H.A.V., the author of this original text, was Heinrich von und zum Velde, the fencing master of Johann Joachim Hynitzsch.

Not that the country was completely lacking in resident composers of symphonic music during the Classical and Romantic eras. There was, for example, Gaspard Fritz (d.1783), whom Dr Bumey met in Geneva. There was Xaver Schnyder von Wartensee (d.1868), whose works include an amiable ‘Military’ Symphony. But the dominant force in the 19th century was the composer, publisher and pedagogue Hans Georg Nägeli, whose primary achievement was to develop a choral tradition. Instrumental music in Switzerland depended largely on imports. Joachim Raff, who came from the Lake Zurich region, did not begin to find his feet as a symphonist until he settled in Germany. The vocal bias persisted into the 20th century: thus Othmar Schoeck could say that writing a violin sonata was something of a ‘crime’ for him.

Background:Up to 40% of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients develop kidney disease, which represents a major cause of morbidity.Objectives:To update the 2012 EULAR/ERA-EDTA recommendations for the management of lupus nephritis (LN).Methods:We followed the EULAR standardised operating procedures for the publication of treatment recommendations. Delphi-based methodology led to 15 questions for systematic literature review (SLR), which was undertaken by three fellows.Results:The changes include recommendations for treatment targets, use of glucocorticoids and calcineurin inhibitors (CNI), and management of end-stage-kidney-disease (ESKD). The target of therapy is complete response (proteinuria <0.5-0.7gr/24h with [near-]normal glomerular filtration rate) by 12 months, but this can be extended in patients with baseline nephrotic-range proteinuria. Hydroxychloroquine is recommended with regular ophthalmological monitoring. In active proliferative LN, initial (induction) treatment with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF 2-3g/day, or mycophenolic acid at equivalent dose) or low-dose intravenous cyclophosphamide (CY; 500mg x6 biweekly doses), both combined with glucocorticoids (pulses of intravenous methylprednisolone, then oral prednisone 0.3-0.5mg/kg/day) is recommended. MMF/CNI (especially tacrolimus) combination and high-dose CY are alternatives, for patients with nephrotic-range proteinuria and adverse prognostic factors. Subsequent long-term maintenance treatment with MMF or azathioprine should follow, with no or low-dose (<7.5 mg/day) glucocorticoids. The choice of agent depends on the initial regimen and plans for pregnancy. In non-responding disease, switch of induction regimens or rituximab are recommended. In pure membranous LN with nephrotic-range proteinuria or proteinuria >1g/24h despite renin-angiotensin-aldosterone blockade, MMF in combination with glucocorticoids is preferred. Assessment for kidney and extra-renal disease activity, and management of comorbidities is lifelong with repeat kidney biopsy in cases of incomplete response or nephritic flares. Der Artikel versammelt vier Fallstudien mit dem Ziel, anhand von neuem Quellenmaterial einige offene Fragen stilkritischer, werkgeschichtlicher und biografischer Natur zu Johann Sebastian Bach einer Klärung entgegen zu führen. Die erste Studie widmet sich einem Beleg für Bachs frühe Beschäftigung mit der Gattung der italienischen Solokantate, den ein in der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin verwahrtes Einzelblatt mit dem Beginn einer Komposition Antonio Biffis liefert, das von Bachs Hand stammt. Ebenfalls in der Berliner Staatsbibliothek fand sich der originale Textdruck zur Aufführung von BWV 194 bei der Orgelweihe in Störmthal, der im nächsten Abschnitt vorgestellt wird. Die besprochenen Quellen werden in Faksimiles wiedergegeben. Der dritte Teil widmet sich einer verschollenen Trauungskantate, die die Urbilder von BWV 195/1 und /5 enthalten haben soll. Über dieses Werk gibt ein Textdruck aus dem Schlossmuseum Sangerhausen Auskunft. Die letzte Studie behandelt die im Stadtarchiv Eilenburg vorhandene Akte zur Wiederbesetzung der Konrektorenstelle an der dortigen Stadtschule 1749, zu der die Superintendentur Delitzsch eine Parallelakte verwahrt und die eigenhändige Zeugnisse Bachs enthält.
