Campbell, Edward. Music-Becoming-Animal in Works by Grisey, Aperghis and Levinas. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474422734.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of ‘becoming-animal’ has rich potential for a discussion of a number of recent musical artworks. It links Deleuze and Guattari not only with Olivier Messiaen, the bird-lover par excellence, but also with composers Gérard Grisey, Michaël Levinas and Georges Aperghis. With Levinas's sonic hybridisations in the Ouverture pour une fête étrange (1979) sound is amplified to the point that it becomes ‘an almost animal living mob’. In the experimental music theatre piece Avis de tempête (2004) Georges Aperghis produces a ‘fetish reading' of Moby Dick in which 'Melville's universe impregnates the entire spectacle'. While the great whale does not appear anywhere in the libretto, the theme of fragmented subjectivity is prominent throughout. Finally, the temporalities at play in late works by Gérard Grisey embody aspects of animality. In Le Temps et l'écume (1989), three times – 'normal', extremely compressed and extremely slow, indicate the temporal frames of humans, birds and whales, and follow one another successively in the formal unfolding of the work. Beyond the representational or imitative qualities of earlier musics, the chapter argues that in each of these works, a Deleuze-Guattarian diagram is drawn in which music no longer evokes animality but rather itself becomes animal.

Trollope, Anthony. Can You Forgive Her? Edited by Dinah Birch. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199578177.001.0001.

Abstract:
‘She loved him much, and admired him even more than she loved him…Would that he had some faults!’ Alice Vavasor is torn between a risky marriage with her ambitious cousin George and the safer prospect of a union with the formidably correct John Grey. Her indecision is reflected in the dilemmas of her friend Lady Glencora, confined in the proprieties of her life with Plantagenet Palliser but tempted to escape with her penniless lover Burgo Fitzgerald, and of her aunt, the irreverent widow Mrs Greenow, who must choose between a solid farmer and an untrustworthy soldier as her next husband. Each woman finds her choice bound up with the cold realities of money, and the tension between public expectation and private inclination. Can You Forgive Her? is the first of Trollope’s six Palliser novels, and its focus on the exercise of power, whether in the masculine world of parliament and the professions, or within the domesticities of friendship, courtship, and marriage, signals a new breadth and diversity of interest in his fiction.

Stone, Michael E. Secret Groups in Ancient Judaism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190842383.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis advanced in this work is that the model of a secret or esoteric group is fruitful for studying various movements and groups in the Greco–Roman world. This is worked out in the extremely interesting case of the Essenes and the Qumran covenanters, for which we have available not only outsider descriptions but also the very documents that embody at least part of their secret teachings. This approach to analysis is not intended to supplant the sect/normative pattern for describing Ancient Judaism, but to supplement it, adding a very fruitful unexplored dimension to the analysis of ancient Jewish society. By attributing, in the footsteps of Georg Simmel, and more recently L. Hazelrigg, the organization and dynamic of secret societies to the need to guard the secret knowledge, it provides ways of understanding the organization and practice of the Qumran covenanters Essene sect, which were previously unperceived. Having established the theoretical framework, having shown that such groups existed in both non-Jewish and Jewish society in the Greco–Roman world, the book then proceeds to analyze in detail the working out of this dynamic in the cases of the Therapeutae and the Essenes, supplementing this with investigation of whether there is evidence for this same dynamic elsewhere in Second Temple Jewish society. Moreover, this analysis bears on the overall “fit” of these groups in the society of the period, so richly endowed with names of and evidence for different groups in that society.

Hornby, Louise. Stilling the Subject. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190661229.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers how photography emerges as an incomplete, iterative form of portraiture against an elusive subject. It looks specifically at Marcel Proust’s definition of modernist portraiture in À la Recherche du Temps Perdu as an incomplete, serial form. The narrator turns repeatedly to photographic tropes of portraiture to try to capture an image of Albertine, the woman he loves. She remains unseeable, her opacity constructed both by still photography and by her suspected lesbianism. The chapter traces lesbian sexuality’s resistance in a number of figures and photographs alongside Proust’s novel, incorporating readings of Alfred Stieglitz’s portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe and concluding with modernism’s most inscrutable female figure, Greta Garbo. The point conveyed is not that photography fails to get at its subject (although this is Proust’s complaint), but that photography makes the subject’s inscrutability and opacity visible as such.
