Abstract:

Abstract:
We used population estimates (VPA) fishing effort and catch data for Georges Bank haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus, from 1964 through 1984 to test Paloheimo and Dickie's hypothesis which predicts: (1) that the catchability coefficient (q) from the commercial fishery is inversely related to haddock stock size (N) and stock area (Area); (2) that commercial catch per effort (C/f) data are curvilinearly related to stock abundance; and (3) that search time in the Georges Bank haddock fishery is inversely related to stock abundance. The catchability coefficients for the Georges Bank trawl fishery were inversely related to haddock stock size (r = −0.82, P < 0.001) and stock area (r = −0.75, P < 0.001). There was also a significant curvilinear relationship between commercial C/f and absolute and relative haddock stock biomass from 1964 through 1984. The slope estimate (B + 1) from this relationship was less than 1.0 (r = 4.18 to 8.95, P < 0.001), indicating nonlinearity between C/f and N. Finally, the relative search time expended by the haddock commercial fishery was inversely related to stock size from 1964 through 1984 (r = −0.75, P < 0.001). These results are consistent with the three predictions of the Paloheimo and Dickie hypothesis, suggesting that fishing mortality rates on Georges Bank haddock are a depensatory function of stock biomass.

Abstract:
AbstractWarm-up of 267 competitors at British Dressage affiliated competitions was observed, including competitors at novice (N) (n = 104), medium (M) (n = 65), Prix St Georges (PSG) (n = 60) and Grand Prix (GP) (n = 38) levels. Competitions were classified as local (n = 103), regional (n = 57) and national championship (n = 107) events. Overall, the mean warm-up duration for competitors at dressage competitions was 29 min 53 s. Total warm-up duration was 25 min 23 s ± 10 min 2 s (mean ± SD) at N level; 31 min 32 s ± 11 min 32 s at M level; 32 min 53 s ± 11 min 19 s at PSG and 34 min 34 s ± 10 min 10 s at GP. Mean proportion of walk, trot and canter at each level was N: walk = 39.26%, trot = 40.31%, canter = 20.43%; M: walk = 43.77%, trot = 32.54%, canter = 23.69%; PSG: walk = 38.53%, trot = 31.03%, canter = 30.43% and GP: walk = 38.79%, trot = 33.26%, canter = 27.95%. There was no effect of rider experience, but level and type of competition affected the proportion of time spent in different paces and total time of warm-up, which was increased at higher levels and championships. Increased warm-up time and specific warm-up design were positively associated with final score at novice and Prix St Georges levels.

Abstract:
Abstract The spawning dynamics of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) on Georges Bank and Nantucket Shoals are not well understood. To address this uncertainty, we combined Fishermen’s Ecological Knowledge (FEK) with traditional scientific data to develop a more holistic understanding of cod spawning on Georges Bank. Data from historical reports, trawl surveys, fisheries observers, and ichthyoplankton surveys were used to describe the spatial and temporal distribution of cod spawning activity. We also collected FEK regarding cod spawning dynamics through semi-structured interviews (n = 40). The fishermen had detailed knowledge of the spatial and temporal distribution of cod spawning, and identified persistent fine-scale (i.e. &lt;50 km2) spawning grounds that were often associated with specific habitat features, including spawning grounds that were previously unreported in the scientific literature. The spawning seasons and locations identified by fishermen generally agreed with information from traditional scientific data, but it was evident that seasonal scientific surveys lack the spatial and temporal resolution needed to fully characterize the distribution of cod spawning activity. Our results will help inform management measures designed to promote the rebuilding of Georges Bank cod, and also provide a basis for further investigations of cod spawning dynamics and stock structure.

Sauve, Ross Joseph. "Georges V. Florovsky and Vladimir N. Lossky : an exploration, comparison and demonstration of their unique approaches to the neopatristic synthesis." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/591/.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to explore and compare the unique approaches to the neopatristic synthesis of Georges V. Florovsky and Vladimir N. Lossky. I will also demonstrate how these differences are manifested in their doctrine of creation. But first, to place their works in context, I consider their respective histories, views of Tradition, and methodologies. As a minor theme, I will show that both men were influenced by the Sophiological controversy: Fr. Sergius Bulgakov and Fr. Pavel Florensky are unseen interlocutors, to very different effects, in both Florovsky and Lossky. One main concern that arises is what truly determines Orthodox theology. Florovsky’s method is very historical, and his view of Tradition follows the neopatristic synthesis quite closely, even programmatically. His premise that God created freely, coupled with the absolute ontological distinction between creature and Creator, leads him to the conclusion that man is absolutely free and undetermined. This is the foundation of his personalist theology. Yet most of his work on creation is in hidden contradistinction to Russian religious philosophy, specifically the Sophiology of Bulgakov. Lossky’s work is also based on the Fathers, but he adds much that is his own creative theological work. He does not follow the neopatristic synthesis as programmatically as Florovsky. The basis of Lossky’s entire anthropology is found, by way of analogy, in his Trinitarian theology. But the major difference between his work and Florovsky’s is that Lossky is indebted to Russian religious philosophy: he shares much with the work of Florensky, as well as some of the intuitions of Bulgakov. This is particularly apparent in his concepts of the image of God in man and of the person. But he also arrives at his personalism through his apophatic method, applied in a universal manner, and his true synthesis of the Fathers with contemporary thought.

Abstract:
In 1903, Georges Benoit-Lévy (1880-1971), a law graduate, received a grant from the Musée social, France, to travel to England to study the two industrial model villages of Port Sunlight and Bournville, and also to visit the building site of the first English garden city, Letchworth, which is the concretisation of the ideas formulated by Ebenezer Howard in 1898. On his return to France, Benoit-Lévy founded the Association des Cités-Jardins de France in order to spread the concept in his home country and to trigger the building of garden cities like Letchworth in France. In the mid-1920s, he ardently defended the linear city concept elaborated by Arturo Soria y Mata, a Spanish engineer. Denouncing the housing and urban crisis, Benoit-Lévy believed that the two urban models provided relevant solutions both to insalubrious housing and urban congestion. The « infortune critique » associated with the lack of critical attention given to Benoit-Lévy's role following the First World War called for a revision of his itinerary from 1903 to 1939. By analysing the thoughts and actions of an idealist propagandist, this study does not aim to rehabilitate Georges Benoit-Lévy, but to highlight both the contradictions

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract.—As part of an intensive study of spiny dogfish <em>Squalus acanthias </em>off the Atlantic coast of Canada, we studied the sexual maturation and growth of dogfish collected on research surveys and as part of the commercial fishery. Sexually mature and pregnant females were distributed throughout the waters of southwest Nova Scotia during the summer and fall but moved offshore to deeper waters in the winter. Juveniles were most abundant off Georges Bank and near the edge of the Scotian Shelf during the winter. The fork length at 50% maturity for males was 55.5 cm at age 10, while that for females was 72.5 cm at age 16. Free embryos were observed in 62% of all pregnant females (<em>n </em>= 1,491), the number of embryos increasing with the size of the female. Free embryos first became apparent in June at a fork length of 16 cm and would be expected to reach their birth size of 22–25 cm during the winter. Validated ages based on spine growth bands indicated a longevity of 31 years (<em>n </em>= 525). Males and females grew at similar rates until the size and age of male maturity, after which male growth rate slowed considerably. Two-parameter von Bertalanffy growth equations using a fixed size at birth gave <em>L</em>∞ = 78.0 and <EM>K </EM>= 0.099 for the males and <em>L</em>∞ = 119.5 and <EM>K </EM>= 0.042 for the females. Atlantic dogfish appear to grow more quickly and die at a younger age than do Northeast Pacific dogfish. Small amounts of offshore pupping in southern Nova Scotia waters probably represent the northern limits of an extended distribution centered in U.S. waters. Although they probably originate from the same population, dogfish living in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off Newfoundland may be functionally isolated from dogfish found further south. Our results and published tagging studies suggest that both resident and migratory components of the Northwest Atlantic population occupy Canadian waters.
