Abstract:

This dissertation examines the history of Wicca, a religious system created by Gerald Gardner in England in the late 40th through three of his works that deal specifically with its conception of witchcraft, " High Magic s Aid" (1949) "Witchcraft Today" (1954) and "The Meaning of Witchcraft" (1959). Within a perspective that takes into account your inspirations for the creation of a system resulting from their original religious movement as a seeker in the occult milieu of his time, we seek to understand Wicca as a religious system through a counter cultural interpretation. Thus this work asks in what sense the works of Gardner is a historical product of their social time. Our hypothesis is that his works are a product of the social history of postwar England to the extent that Gardner, in constructing his conception of witchcraft in his works, appropriated counter-trend to compose a countercultural religious system

Abstract:
This thesis is an intensive, multi-layered analysis of an unpublished, English language, handwritten, mid-20th century manuscript. Originally undated, untitled and unsigned, it has now been positively identified as “Text A”, a Wiccan proto-Book of Shadows compiled by Gerald Brosseau Gardner (1884-1964) in the last half of the 1940’s. Different methodologies were applied to the document: transcription using Leiden conventions, handwriting analysis to identify the author, archival research to uncover photographs of the manuscript in use, historical and bibliographical research to situate the manuscript and its author, and finally, an in-depth and exhaustive source analysis to uncover literary and documentary influences on the text. Subsequently, the manuscript was identified as handwritten by Gerald Gardner, from 1940 to 1949, and contains almost no original material other than a handful of pages for a speech or oral presentation. The rest of the document is comprised of extracts from published sources available to Gardner. These include books on Free Masonry, Templars, British Folklore, Kabbalah, Magic – ancient and ceremonial, and books by Aleister Crowley. The document also includes ritual passages and ceremonies, most of which also appear in Gardner’s published novel, High Magic’s Aid. Two theme-lines, “Magic – ancient and ceremonial” and “the writings of Aleiser Crowley”, comprising almost 40% of the total page count, were chosen for thorough analysis. Based on the information revealed by the various methodologies applied to this document, one can assert that Gardner’s claims to have been initiated into an ancient indigenous tradition, Wicca, and to be making available its long secret rituals are not supported by this document.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the analysis and creation of compositions from the standpoint of texture and momentum. It is comprised of four chapters. The first presents a number of concepts as tools for analysis, including textural typography and transformation, perception of time and psychological engagement of an audience, and respiration as a metaphor for musical momentum. The second and third chapters apply these tools to Gerard Grisey's "Periodes" and "Partiels," and Brian Ferneyhough's "Lemma-Icon-Epigram." The fourth explores specific methodologies used in composing my dissertation piece, "Phase," including the application of number systems ranging from formal to local levels.

Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10437/10314.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the different ways that the garden and courtyard can be integrated into buildings, and the difference between them - allowing a better understanding of the type of outdoor spaces appropriate to each building. It is important to study and understand these differences for the characterization of a building, which will have different experiences according to the framed outer space. The courtyard and the garden are outer spaces that existed since the primitive people and have evolved over the years, taking on new proportions and sensations, and have been characterized in order to become very distinct spaces. The gardens began to be functional spaces, destined to the cultivation of edible plants, without ornamental function, evolving to spaces designed with esthetic concern and architecturally related to the buildings and the man. The courtyard at the beginning of its existence was a space of protection from the outside, allowing man to take advantage of the outside, and it was necessary to delimit it so that man could imagine a contact with the outside without danger. Today courtyards retain this feature, but have become versatile over time and can be integrated into buildings with different typologies and extended to various functions beyond the limited relationship with the exterior. In the Hotel's previous study, developed for the Project 5.1 subject, the courtyard emerges as one of the main elements, allowing hotel users to maintain a relationship with the outside while taking advantage of the leisure spaces. These spaces become transparent and full of natural light, with the possibility of extending through the courtyard.

Abstract:
This essay is simultaneously an intimate autobiographical reflection and a sensory botanical portrait of dianthus, particularly a variety known as "grass pinks" or "cottage pinks." Referring to the work of botanist John Gerard and seedsman/editor James Vick, Bailey reflects on this plant, and his reflection serves as a testament to the garden-sentiment as it weaves together plant and person into a single life tapestry.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Jews in the English judiciary from 1945 to 1990. Until the late 1960s, no Jew could become a High Court judge unless he belonged to the Anglo-Jewish elite, which differed little in educational attainments and lifestyle from the rest of the English upper class, even if he was exceptionally able. Starting in 1968, during the last years of Harold Wilson's Labour administration, Lord Chancellor Gerald Gardiner began to appoint Jewish barristers from middle-class backgrounds and of east European family origin to the High Court bench. These men had for the most part been educated in local grammar schools and redbrick universities. This policy was continued both by the Conservative Heath government and by Labour administrations in the 1970s. The chapter then assesses how Jewish these High Court judges were in their personal affiliation.
