Abstract:
God created the Earth, but the Dutch created the Netherlands, albeit with only a limited role for the railway. Any railway museum in this country invented by and dependent on hydraulic engineering must creatively solve the problem of portraying a technology of mobility which was not central to the Waterstaat (hydro-engineering) identity and the nation’s sociotechnological construction, but one which initially was secondary and subsidiary and, above all, delayed. On the face of it, the story to be told here appears to be that of how, in a northwestern part of Europe where thorough industrialization was late to come, railway-based mobility established itself against the omnipresence of shipping and evolved from seaport-catering surface logistics into an integral element of everyday transportation in twentieth-century Netherlands. The Utrecht Spoorwegmuseum (railway museum) impressively shows that this is not even half the truth, behind which might be, at best, the grumbling resentment of an 1890 boatman.

Abstract There are no societal prospects for this study in the Netherlands’. Musicology in Utrecht, 1930-1940 Musicology became a fully-fledged academic study in the Netherlands in 1930 when both the Chair in Musicology and the Institute for Music History were founded at Utrecht University. Using sources such as archives, newspapers, personal memories of old studies in letters, and a talk on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the institute, this article describes the history of musicology Utrecht, its curriculum and what the first professor in musicology Albert Smijers expected of his students in the first decade of the institute’s existence.

BackgroundAttempted suicide rates are much higher in the UK than in the Netherlands. We have compared the characteristics of suicide attempters referred to general hospitals in Oxford and Utrecht.MethodWe compared the characteristics of referrals for attempted suicide to a general hospital in Oxford and one in Utrecht, for the years 1988 and 1989.ResultsMost of the attempters in Oxford were young whereas attempters in Utrecht were older; this age difference was particularly marked in females. Utrecht attempters appeared more often to have socio-economic problems and to suffer from psychiatric and personality disorders (except substance abuse), even when account was taken of the age differences of the two populations.ConclusionsThere is some evidence for different thresholds for attempted suicide in the UK and the Netherlands, although other social explanations for the difference in attempted suicide rates are feasible and require further study.

Abstract:
AbstractActive in the Southern Netherlands in the mid-fifteenth century was a miniaturist who signed his work twice and who can be identified as Antonis Rogiersz. uten Broec. In addition to his contributions to the two manuscripts in which he included his name, he worked on three other Southern-Netherlandish manuscripts. Antonis' style as manifested in these five manuscripts reemerges in a group of illuminated manuscripts produced in Utrecht in the 1460s. They are attributed to the so-called Master of the Boston City of God. On the basis of stylistic arguments and circumstantial evidence of a codicological nature, I believe that this until now anonymous miniaturist is no one less than Antonis uten Broec. To substantiate this identification, research was conducted in the Utrecht archives on the Antonis uten Broec known from Southern-Netherlandish manuscripts. He appears to have been a member of a family that had been living and working in Utrecht for generations. It can hardly be doubted that Antonis' roots are in Utrecht and it is certain that he was buried there in 1468/'69. No matter how fragmentary, the mentions in Utrecht archival material afford biographical data on one of the generally anonymous miniaturists in the Northern Netherlands. At this point, of these artists, Antonis uten Broec is the best documented and, moreover, pursued his career in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands. This knowledge adds to our insight regarding the mobility and reciprocal influence of artists in both regions.

Abstract:
In 1853 an important step in the development of the Roman Catholic Church in the Netherlands was set. On initiative of the Vatican and despite vehement resistance of the orthodox Protestant part of the population (known as the April-movement), the episcopal hierarchy in the church was restored. By choosing Utrecht in the heart of the protestant Netherlands and not Den Bosch in the Catholic South of the country as the seat of the new archbishop, the Vatican practised an offensive, national strategy. Unintendedly, the Papal choice for Utrecht contributed to the later on development of the non-territorial, personalistic solution for the Dutch multicultural society at that time: the verzuiling.

Abstract:
This is a case study of the Utrecht tramway rolling stock maintenance project (21.6M euros). The case study is unique to the Dutch environment, which has experienced many construction-related projects. As it is one of the first services contracts in this area, it is different from a construction project, where the performance can be more easily and quickly identified. Another unique factor is that the vendors are also less educated in the Best Value (BV) approach. The BV approach and concept of the “vendor having no financial risk, and the owner having all the financial risk” was not well understood. At the time of its procurement (May 2011), the understanding of the clarification period in the Netherlands was not mature, causing potential issues with this type of contract. The uniqueness of this project, coupled with the approach to BV, presents invaluable lessons learned for entities interested in implementing BV.

Abstract:
We investigated the prevalence and explored the vulnerability to suicidal ideation across several ethnic minority versus ethnic majority adolescents in the city of Utrecht in The Netherlands. Exploratory analyses were conducted on a dataset obtained from the Municipal Health Services in Utrecht. We examined whether ethnic minority adolescents are at risk for suicidal ideation because of a family background of migration, social-economic position and certain family factors, which influence psychological constellations. We found that levels of suicidal ideation among adolescents of Turkish background were significantly higher than in both majority and other minority adolescents. The Turkish adolescents at risk for suicidal ideation reported that they do not enjoy being at home with their families. Psychological factors, in particular lack of self-pride and the idea of not becoming successful in life, appeared to be important, as well as feelings of loneliness. Suicidal ideation was not found equally across all ethnic minority groups. A history of migration, ethnic minority status, or low socioeconomic status were not sufficient to explain the variation across ethnicities. Our results suggest that specific social-cultural factors, contextualized in the individual and located in the family environment, are relevant in explaining the disproportionate rates for Turkish adolescents in Utrecht.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Protestant Dutch Republic, Catholic priests were represented as one of the deadliest “enemies” in view of both their confessional doctrines and political inclination. Under pressure from the Reformed Church, numerous anti-Catholic edicts were issued for the prosecution of priests streaming like a swarm of “locusts” to the Utrecht city, the stronghold for Reformed and Catholic Churches alike in the Northern Netherlands. In theory, the policy of the political authorities barred priests from their pastoral duties to Catholics living in the city. In practice, however, the Utrecht magistracy publicly recognised, and non-publicly connived at, the presence of priests. Political practices of pro/persecution and toleration served to manage and regulate the precarious environment of confessional coexistence. In defying persecution and seeking toleration, Catholic priests tactically and discursively mobilised their civic status based on their and/or their families’ close relationship with, and contribution to, the civic community of Utrecht.

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born on 27-03-1845, 150 years ago, in Lennep- Remscheid in Westphalen, Germany, from a German father and a Dutch mother. He remained an only child. When he was 3 years old, the family moved to Apeldoom in the Netherlands. His parental home exists and will be the Röntgen bar. After going to school in Apeldoorn, he went to a technical school in Utrecht, where he finished in 1865. He enrolled in the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, but found that he did not have the right certificates to pass the examinations. He then went to Zurich to the newly stifted Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, where restrictions were less severe. In 18869, he got his doctorate on ‘Thermodynamics of gases.’ He was a brilliant student with a wide variety of interests.

This article considers two Scottish cases, in 1693 and 1711, in which legal opinions were obtained from professors in law faculties in the Netherlands. These are the only known examples of this phenomenon. As well as considering the contemporary citation of Dutch sources in Scottish pleadings, and the relevance of legal education particularly in Utrecht, the article considers why, in the context of the cases concerned, such appeals might have been made to the Dutch universities. These Dutch opinions are contrasted with the later tendency of Scottish lawyers to obtain opinions from English counsel in certain circumstances. The article ends with the text and translation of the 1711 opinion from Utrecht.

Abstract:
For this study we have adopted a comparative approach to better understand the regularities and differences of cinema markets and cultures. Our subject is the film preferences and choices of audiences in the cities of Ghent (Belgium), Utrecht (Netherlands) and Bolton (United Kingdom) in 1934 and 1935. Saturday, January 5th, 1935 serves as a pivotal date and the starting point for analysis of the film programming data of these three cities. Our findings show that by adopting a comparative approach it is possible to detect ‘unique’ titles that reflect the peculiarities of the local film culture. The data confirms that audiences in Bolton, Ghent, and Utrecht were attracted strongly to films originating in their own or neighbouring countries, particularly if they contained elements of song and dance.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS; Crocetti, Rubini, & Meeus, 2008 ) is a recently developed measure of identity that has been shown to be a reliable tool for assessing identity processes in adolescents. This study examines psychometric properties of the U-MICS in a large adolescent sample from seven European countries focused on the interplay of commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment. Participants were 1,007 adolescents from Bulgaria (n = 146), the Czech Republic (n = 142), Italy (n = 144), Kosovo (n = 150), Romania (n = 142), Slovenia (n = 156), and the Netherlands (n = 127). We tested the U-MICS measurement invariance, reliability estimates in each language version, and compared latent identity means across groups. Results showed that the U-MICS has good internal consistency as well as configural, metric, and partial scalar invariance across groups in the sampled countries.

Abstract:
Abstract. Characterizing and attributing methane (CH4) emissions across varying scales are important from environmental, safety, and economic perspectives and are essential for designing and evaluating effective mitigation strategies. Mobile real-time measurements of CH4 in ambient air offer a fast and effective method to identify and quantify local CH4 emissions in urban areas. We carried out extensive campaigns to measure CH4 mole fractions at the street level in Utrecht, the Netherlands (2018 and 2019), and Hamburg, Germany (2018). We detected 145 leak indications (LIs; i.e., CH4 enhancements of more than 10 % above background levels) in Hamburg and 81 LIs in Utrecht. Measurements of the ethane-to-methane ratio (C2:C1), methane-to-carbon dioxide ratio (CH4:CO2), and CH4 isotope composition (δ13C and δD) show that in Hamburg about 1∕3 of the LIs, and in Utrecht 2∕3 of the LIs (based on a limited set of C2:C1 measurements), were of fossil fuel origin. We find that in both cities the largest emission rates in the identified LI distribution are from fossil fuel sources. In Hamburg, the lower emission rates in the identified LI distribution are often associated with biogenic characteristics or (partly) combustion. Extrapolation of detected LI rates along the roads driven to the gas distribution pipes in the entire road network yields total emissions from sources that can be quantified in the street-level surveys of 440±70 t yr−1 from all sources in Hamburg and 150±50 t yr−1 for Utrecht. In Hamburg, C2:C1, CH4:CO2, and isotope-based source attributions show that 50 %–80 % of all emissions originate from the natural gas distribution network; in Utrecht more limited attribution indicates that 70 %–90 % of the emissions are of fossil origin. Our results confirm previous observations that a few large LIs, creating a heavy tail, are responsible for a significant proportion of fossil CH4 emissions. In Utrecht, 1∕3 of total emissions originated from one LI and in Hamburg >1/4 from two LIs. The largest leaks were located and fixed quickly by GasNetz Hamburg once the LIs were shared, but 80 % of the (smaller) LIs attributed to the fossil category could not be detected and/or confirmed as pipeline leaks. This issue requires further investigation.

Abstract:
Jacob van Campen, the most distinguished architect of the Dutch Republic during its seventeenth-century Golden Age, is identified as the designer of Amersfoortweg (the Amersfoort Road) in A Roman Road in the Dutch Republic. This large-scale landscape architecture project was conceived to improve transportation in the province of Utrecht and also to catalyze the transformation of a large wasteland into a landscape of prosperous agricultural estates. The grandiose roadway, over sixty meters wide and lined with trees, ran perfectly straight for most of the route between Utrecht and Amersfoort. Jaap Evert Abrahamse argues that Van Campen and his clients created Amersfoortweg on the model of the ancient Roman roads that they had read about in the Renaissance treatises that were beginning to circulate in the Netherlands.

Abstract:
The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Dutch and Italian versions of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS) in large community samples of adolescents from Italy (N = 1,975) and The Netherlands (N = 1,521). Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the three-factor model, consisting of commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration of commitment, provided a better fit to the data than alternative one- and two-factor models. The three-factor model fit equivalently across sex and across age groups (early and middle adolescents). Furthermore, we demonstrated cross-national equivalence of the factor structure of the U-MICS. Additionally, results indicated that the latent means for commitment were higher in the Dutch sample, while latent means for both in-depth exploration and reconsideration of commitment were substantially higher in the Italian sample. The three identity processes were found to be meaningfully related to measures of self-concept, psychosocial problems, and parent-adolescent relations in both countries. These findings suggest that the U-MICS is a reliable tool for assessing identity processes in Italian and Dutch adolescents.

Abstract:
AbstractCollaboration between two painters was a common occurrence in the Netherlands of the seventeenth century. To date, sixteen examples are known to have resulted from the partnership of the Antwerp landscape painter, Alexander Keirincx, and the Utrecht Italianate master, Cornelis van Poelenburch (see appendix). The paintings usually combine a wooded landscape by the hand of Keirincx with a few figures added by Van Poelenburch. Two of the works are signed by both artists, one by Van Poelenburch only, and most of the others by Keirincx alone.A few of these paintings have been analyzed using infrared reflectography, which revealed that Keirincx meticulously executed his underdrawing of the landscape, without any indication for the staffage. Next, Keirincx painted the landscape, sometimes deviating slightly from his preliminary underdrawing. After that, Cornelis van Poelenburch added figures and animals, here and there inserting small brush strokes to the landscape immediately around the figures.Although Van Poelenburch may have included his staffage without consulting Alexander Keirincx, an addition by Keirincx in one of his compositions, seems to indicate a closer contact between the artists. While they lived near each other in Utrecht (1632-1636) and London (1637-1641), their collaboration did not only occur during those years, as can be concluded from two dated works (1629, 1630).A unique instance of their collaboration is the Landscape with Cimon and Iphigenia (Utrecht; replica or copy in Leipzig, figs 17 and 26). IRR analysis unequivocally confirms that the landscape and the figure zone initially were painted by Van Poelenburch, after which Keirincx added the large tree at the left. A differently prepared plank was attached to the lower part, maybe especially for that purpose. The Leipzig version lacks this feature, as well as some minor adjustments to the composition, thus indicating that it was executed after the Utrecht panel.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 3030 Although multiple myeloma (MM) is considered an incurable malignancy of antibody-producing clonal plasma cells, over the past decade significant progress has been made in MM treatment by the availability of novel immunomodulating agents such as lenalidomide (LEN) and bortezomib (BORT). We are currently exploring the possibility to further improve MM therapy by combining LEN and BORT with novel agents, such as daratumumab (DARA), a human antibody directed against CD38 which mediates MM cell lysis via ADCC (antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity), CDC (complement dependent cytotoxicity) and apoptosis. Our initial in vitro work show significantly improved MM cell killing by combined DARA with LEN treatment. We now investigated whether further improvement of this combination therapy is possible by addition of BORT. In ex vivo assays, which allow us to address killing directly in BM-MNC isolated from MM patients, we demonstrate that the DARA+LEN+BORT combination significantly exceeds the effectiveness of LEN+BORT treatment (P<0.001). Remarkably, triple therapy was also very effective, even when there was little or no response against LEN+BORT (P=0.0001). In other assays we further mimicked the in vivo conditions by incubating BM-MNC not only with LEN, BORT and DARA for 48 hours but also by adding complement. Addition of complement resulted in substantial enhancement of DARA-mediated MM tumor cell killing. This killing could not be further improved by addition of LEN and BORT. In conclusion, we demonstrate that addition of DARA to a LEN+BORT treatment regime increases overall clearance of MM cells ex vivo, suggesting that patients, even when not responding to LEN+BORT treatment, might benefit from a DARA+LEN+BORT combination therapy. Abstract:
AbstractMobile temperature and humidity measurements have been performed along a 14-km transect through the city of Utrecht, in the Netherlands (311 000 inhabitants), during the period March 2006–January 2009. The measurements took place on a bicycle during commuter traffic and resulted in 106 nighttime profiles (before sunrise) and 77 daytime (afternoon) profiles. It is shown how the intensity of the urban heat island depends on wind direction, cloudiness, and wind speed. Statistical models are constructed that relate the mean and maximum nighttime urban heat island intensity profiles to area-averaged sky-view factors and land use combined at both the micro- and local scales. Sky-view factors are estimated from a 0.5 m × 0.5 m surface elevation database, and land use is obtained from a 25 m × 25 m land-use database. The models are calibrated using the mobile measurements and provide estimates of the spatial distribution of the mean and maximum nighttime urban heat island intensity in Utrecht. Both models explain more than 75% of the variance. A separate nonlinear model is introduced that relates the temperature differences between the warmest part and coolest part of the transects to wind speed and cloudiness.

Abstract:
The hangover is the most commonly reported negative consequence of alcohol use with several studies reporting the detrimental consequences of hangover on health, economy, and society. Research has emphasized the socioeconomic consequences of experiencing these physical and psychological symptoms in relation to absenteeism, increased risk of having accidents and injuries, and impairment of daily activities, such as job performance and driving a car. During the 10th Alcohol Hangover Research Group meeting, held on 29 April 2018, in Utrecht, The Netherlands, aspects of alcohol hangover were presented with regards to determinants, biological and cognitive consequences and potential treatments. Precursory and posterior factors influencing alcohol hangover, including biological, psychological, behavioral, metabolic aspects, cognitive functioning, and the role of the immune system in the development of alcohol hangover, were presented. In addition, potential preventive measures and treatments of alcohol hangover to reduce the adverse consequences of alcohol consumption and hangover symptoms were discussed. One study revealed that an average of 24% of social and heavy drinkers claimed not to experience hangover symptoms across time. Another study showed that food intake (either healthy or junk food) had no significant impact on next-day hangover severity. Research examining cognitive and psychomotor functioning during hangover revealed impairments in collective problem solving and response inhibition, but not attentional bias towards alcohol-related cues. The alcohol hangover state further significantly impaired driving performance, even for a short commute to work. With regard to the pathology of the alcohol hangover, research was presented that demonstrated increases in saliva cytokine concentrations confirming drinking alcohol and the hangover phase are both associated with an immune response. Other presentations discussed that scientific literature shows that there are no effective hangover treatments available yet. However, although promising, new hangover treatments are currently in development. Taken together, at the 10th Alcohol Hangover Research Group meeting, a comprehensive overview of the causes, consequences, and potential treatments of the alcohol hangover was presented.
