Abstract Geriatrics care in medical intensive care units (MICU) establishes a unique opportunity in early screening of High Risk Elderly (HRE) patients admitted for critical care. Many MICUs do not have a standard protocol to screen for HRE patients as part of their daily huddle. Our program is a quality improvement initiative to improve early identification of HRE patients in the MICU. HRE patients were identified based on nursing specific screening triggers at one of the Regional Hospitals of a large teaching hospital in Northeast Ohio. The program was designed as a part of geriatrics care ex

Background: In India, aging population is increasing every year. So, healthcare industry needs to set up a geriatric unit soon. Development of geriatrics and old-age care systems in India will make elderly people independent and improve their lifestyle, life expectancy, and quality of life while decreasing the cost of care. This study looks at the views of patients who are 60 years or older, as well as need for a full-fledged geriatric unit in a tertiary care hospital. Hospital care of frail older adults is far from optimal. Although some geriatric models of care have been shown to improve outcomes, the effect size is small and models are difficult to fully implement, sustain and replicate. The two root causes for these shortcomings are competing interests (high revenue generating diseases, procedures and surgeries) and current hospital cultures (for example a culture of safety that emphasizes bed alarms and immobility rather than frequent ambulation). The current literature suggests one of the challenges of nursing today is to meet the health care needs of the growing older population, people over the age of 65. Quality of nursing is important for acutely ill older people who are the largest group of patients in terms of hospital admissions. The ageing population is a major focus for social and economic planners and policy makers. There is an increasing need for health systems to change their focus to more closely assess strategies used to manage the acutely ill older hospital population.
