In addition, the physiologic stress of cancer and cancer treatment may precipitate or exacerbate geriatric syndromes. Abstract:
Background Older adults are more vulnerable to severe infection and mortality due to COVID-19. They have atypical presentations of the disease without respiratory symptoms, making early diagnosis clinically challenging. We aimed to compare the baseline characteristics, presentation, and disease course of older (≥70 yrs & ≥90 yrs) and younger (<70 yrs) patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Methods Retrospective review of 429 consecutive patients hospitalized at two tertiary care hospitals in Montreal, Canada, with PCR-confirmed COVID-19. 9506 Background: Geriatric syndromes are highly prevalent in the elderly population and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The impact of a history of cancer on the presence of geriatric syndromes has not been well described. Methods: Using the 2003 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS), we analyzed a national sample of 12,480 community-based elders. Differences in prevalence of geriatric syndromes between those with and without cancer were estimated. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify independent predictors of geriatric syndromes, including the spe

Objective. To study the prevalence of geriatric syndromes in patients with nuclear cataracts (NC) depending on uncorrected visual acuity. Materials and methods. The study involved 660 patients, divided into 3 groups: 1st (n=220) – patients with NC aged 60–74 years; 2nd (n=240) – patients with NC aged 75–89 years; 3rd (n=200) – patients aged 75–89 years without NC. The presence of geriatric syndromes was studied using a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Results. It was found that deterioration in visual acuity <0.3 without correction is accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of most

We sought to quantify the prevalence of geriatric syndromes in a group of navigated cancer patients and identify conditions associated with distress. Methods: Distress assessments were conducted between January 2012 and December 2015 on enrollment into the PCCP, a lay-navigation program that serves Medicare recipients in the UAB Health System Cancer Community Network. Abstract:
Abstract The WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm recognises medication-related harm (MRH) as a global public health issue. Increased life-expectancy coupled with multimorbidity and polypharmacy leads to an increased incidence of MRH, especially in older adults: at a cost of approximately £400 million to the National Health Service (NHS) in England. Harm from medicines has long been recognised by geriatricians, and strategies have been developed to mitigate harm. In general, these have focused on the challenges of polypharmacy and appropriateness of medicines, but impac
