Full textSylvie Germain’s unusual and syncretic work has found a special place in contemporary literature. Her novels swarm with inventive images and dazzling visions originating from the unconscious or nourished by mythological and biblical references, while her characters plod “against darkness” towards the Light. Now, proliferating and baroque style of the early novels tends to simplicity, purity and calm in the second part of her work, which consists in the Prague novels and initiatory tales focussing on the quest of origins. How and why is it possible to change from ostentatious writing to poetical prose haunted by silence? In our opinion, this purification is not only linked to an aesthetical project, but has as well a spiritual foundation : the author attempts to detect echoes and traces of God’s silence amidst the Visible. She is taking a way, which “consents to silence without closing it into a final emptiness”. At the time when others are tempted by nihilism, she tries to revive lost ties with transcendence. Our study, based on a poetical and phenomenological approach, aims at bringing out the mystical vision of Sylvie Germain, an author impregnated with the tradition of negative theology. Our purpose is to outline – by analysis of images, rhythm and prosody – the main characteristics of paradoxical style, the stakes of which are to express Absence by a sensual and incarnated language. We also analyse – referring to Merleau-Ponty, Levinas and Heidegger, how the author, using both poetry and philosophy, takes oblique paths in order to explore the reverse side of the Visible and the “prose of the world”

Full textWith a dense and complex work of fiction, Sylvie Germain has become a prominent figure in modern French literature. Refering to a large corpus of works illustrative of her fiction, this study attempts to explore her fictional universe that is based on the cosmos and its four elements. The subject of this thesis is therefore the study of space and the symbolic function of material imagination in Germain's novels. In fact, she puts emphasis on the importance of inheritance, roots, transmission, and the elements that mark a family memory. Germain resurrects the rootedness and uprootedness problematic that appeared in French literature in the beginning of the 20th century. Following the thematic and psychoanalytical approaches, this study is built on the binary opposition: rootedness and uprootedness, first within a geographical framework, which later extends to every form of extraction, be it psychological or metaphysical. This study also attempts to prove that both desires of rootedness and uprootedness create a new human typology that would replace the old nomadic/sedentary typology. The will for uprootedness is often translated by the will to make a tabula rasa of the past and to split from a filiation, whereas rootedness requires reconciliation with the past and implies a quest for filiation. Finally, in order to depict memory, Germain develops a pattern of intertextuality and intratextuality, inscribing her text in the line of genesis narratives and in a literary tradition, which both ceaselessly inspire her work

Full textThis thesis is entitled "From «postmemory» to the writing of oblivion in the works of Sylvie Germain", and it examines the dialectic between memory and oblivion in the works of French contemporary writer Sylvie Germain. The thesis is based on the theories of «cultural memory» proposed by Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, Tzvetan Todorov, Paul Ricoeur, Aleida Assmann, and the studies about «postmemory» proposed by Marianne Hirsch. The purpose of this critical perspective is to read the works of Sylvie Germain as an example of «affiliative postmemory» (a kind of memory that results from a generational connection between those who haven’t directly experienced a particular trauma with the so-called «literal second generation»). Moreover, by means of an interdisciplinary approach the thesis aims at establishing a link between memory studies and Gender studies. It also tries to highlight the active function and the prominent role played by female characters in Germain’s novels, both as individuals and as voices for collective memory transmission. Analyzing the most recent works of Sylvie Germain (published between 2008 and 2011), the thesis focuses on the necessity of the writer to counterbalance the weight of «too much memory» by a good deal of oblivion. It also discusses and develops the questions concerning ethic responsibility and the debt to familial and collective memories. This analysis shows how Germain seems to take the role of passeuse de mémoire for future generations through her writing.

Full textThis research structured in three parts seeks to highlight, from a hermeneutics point of view, how the opus germanien to erect around a “poetics of memory”.A hermeneutics approach, especially inspired by Paul Ricoeur's work, allows to demonstrate in this thesis that the Sylvie Germain's fictional work has a deep basis for a poetic memory. Indeed she proceeds herself to a hermeneutics of the memory, searching to deconstruct the built memories whose the individuals thrive on. By proceeding to an archeology of historic memory, my first part analyses how Sylvie Germain figures out her historicity, by showing its misleading creation and manipulation process for the humanity. The second part deals with the way which the Sylvie German's genealogy comprehends the phenomenological memory from the angle of pharmakon. A third part develops the idea of a Sylvie Germain's legacy settled in a phenomenology alterity, only responsible for a happy and pacified memory. My analysis is placed in the light of the imaginary criticism as it established itself, in the wake of Bachelard's “dreamy cogito”, then around Jean-Pierre Richard. Leaning on cross-disciplinary analysis of recurrent tropism, it seeks to demonstrate the Sylvie Germain's poetic is built up on themes but also on narrative operation to tell the time-related experience of the memory. The numerous text which fed the Sylvie Germain's imagination are inventoried in my study as philosophical, historical and ethical foundations of the novelist's creation

Full textSylvie Germain’s novels are written by a writer-thinker, being based on the Judeo-Christian tradition. Evil and the search for God are the two themes privileged by this author who does not write thesis novels, but wonders and thinks about profoundly metaphysical issues in her fiction works. Our approach is thematic, being influenced by mythocriticism and narratology. We have chosen to analyze the figures of « Grace » and « Fall » as the two poles of significance organizing the universe of Sylvie Germain’s novels. In our opinion, « Grace » is synonymous with Christian values- such as goodness, generosity, unconditional love, forgiveness, patience, faith in God, while « Fall » means moral decay in all its forms-lack of love, betrayal, lack of constraint leading to murder, incest and insanity. The three parts of our work are devoted to the epic novel, the family novel and the initiation novel. Sylvie Germain draws on the imaginary of popular literature and revisits the myths (especially the biblical ones), uses narratological structures, but at the same time she innovates in each of the above-mentioned types of novel. Her work, which is in full bloom, proposes a view upon human condition interesting for any reader because of its issues which are, after all, ethical

Full textAccording to the author, Sylvie Germain, own confession, her work is characterised by a permanent anxiety facing the impossibility to change the world, to make it better. "No, there is no answer facing the scandal of Evil and the suffering of the innocents. There are only haunting and ceaseless questions. Of course, great myths, legends, as much as religious texts, help us tack down a little sense and keep an aim". Even thought Evil cannot be eradicated from human nature, the author understands that only mythic writing, with a specifique structure, can reintegrate chaos to the heart of creative unity. This is why this thesis will try to show how Sylvie Germain imaginary world using characters, places and time, manage to create what can be qualified, according to a "mythocritic" inspired by Pierre Albouy, Gilbert Durand or Brunel, as a literary myth. Thanks to the literary myth as defined by the previous three critics, Evil related to destruction can be restructured, metamorphosed or reinstaded in a structure of the found again origin. The myths of the disorder which express themselves through a bunch of various mythological traditions put up with the t emptation of dispair in front of a tragic and historical conciousness being the reflection of our time. Yet thanks to restored schemes and redemptive archetypes, they transform the space-time myths into myths where the palingenesia becomes a creative magic. At the turn of the century, darkenned by decadence, Sylvie Germain draws from the heart of the myths, the power which sets free from the secular by a poetic, epic and aesthetic combat. Mastering a style combining religion and psychanalysis, she traces the itinerary of her own healing and she gives hope back to the entire collectivity. She becomes a writer of the dawn, searching endlessly to eradicate the night

Full textThis work is devoted to the almost exhaustive study of early poems written by Germain Nouveau (1851-1920) covering the period 1872-1879. The common thread is the deepening of the analysis of poetic and personalrelationships that the poet has with Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. The aim is to show how Nouveau’s passion for the works of these two stars has determined its aesthetic, but also how his poetry is still very personal, givinga prominent place among the poets of the decade that followed the war of 1870. The first part examines the poems in 1872-1873, most of which appeared in the literary and artistic renaissance. These texts are dotted with metric and intertextual references to Rimbaud and Verlaine’s poems. The second movement is dedicated to human and poetic meeting between Germain Nouveau and Arthur Rimbaud. We try to clarify the chronology of events, in Paris then in London, through Nouveau’s correspondence and various accounts, including the one of Jean Richepin. Our research is finally interested in subsequent poems to 1874 or undated, sometimes in prose, which, always full of invention and originality, show the Paris Commune and its crushing seem to hold a goodposition

It was founded on the coexistence of a local of production for the flakes and some of the blades chipped in the village, and a regional mode of production for the debitage of the long blades (more than 20 cm) in the tertiary flint which call for a specialized knapper. Those blades were manufactured in some of the village and redistributed inside of the group and certainly exchanged a regional and chronological variability were perceived, indicating local specificities but also the complexity of the process of the nedithisation of the Paris basin

Full textThis work aims to explore the meaning of identity in the novels of Sylvie Germain, who is an important author of contemporary French literature. The novelistic universe of the author que stions the human existence and encourages the reader to ask questions about life and identity. By putting into play the fictional life of her characters, Sylvie Germain denounces the constraints of the modern and contemporary world that cause identity disorders in people. The novels of our corpus ("The Song of False lovers ", "Magnus", "Hidden Lives") are met by this issue of identity that marks the whole journey of actors-characters. In our study, we propose to highlight the different aspects of the problem of identity in a semiotic perspective. By examining the affective, cognitive and modal features of the fictional characters, we focus on their roles and attitudes in order to identify change and permanence in their identity construction. Our study is based in particular on the analysis of "life forms" which determine the modes of existence and perseverance of the characters in their course of life marked by uncertainty and obstacles. Our analysis seeks to determine the disturbances that affect the identity construction of the characters. Through the semiotic analysis that allows us to study the different dimensions of the novelistic discourse-narrative, figurative, affective, enunciative-we propose to capture the significant elements concerning the configuration of identity in Sylvie Germain’s novel universe

An analysis of notarized texts, together with an elevation study, helps us to visualize the medieval landscape as well as the architecture of farms. Archaeological excavations of a castrum abandoned at the end of the 14th century supplement the information given by the texts. In an area where very few studies have been performed and where, traditionally, there are scattered villages, a monograph is a beginning which encourages more indepth research

It treats the settlement on the seaboard during the last inter-ice age (eemian), (the problem of the situation of the coast line). We have tried to gain a better understanding of the environment (defined as the habitat in broad terms) of palaeolithic terms (the examination of remaining and latent constructions) shows a certain organization of the area. The living facilities are situated at the foot of the cliff, protected from the most common direction of wind, whereas the zones probably "specialized" in a fire-consuming activity are situated further down the ancient beach. The technological examination and the topographical analysis of the pieces forming a connection of flakes certify, that different production schemes have been used at the same time : predetermined and contingent production of flakes, concieved from a single face, and predetermined production of blades in a repeated treatment of the volume. The excavation placed in its regional context contributes to the picture of the armorican palaeolithic culture, which can be divided into the following zones : the bois du rocher-group and the mousterian culture of the ferrassie-type in. .

Full textMost of the analyses dealing with the urban space dwell on its main features, namely its high density and concentration of population, functions, buildings, seldom on another feature, that of public gardens and parks. We have chosen to focus on the unproductive "empty" areas pertaining to these urbanized spaces. We will investigate the place and role of these "hollow" areas as well as the stakes they represent. At first, we strongly posit that power leaves its marks on public gardens and parks. Subsequently, taking stock of long term evolutions as well as of recent changes, a wider analysis will enable us to take a close look at the dialectics of development and use. The latter helps pinpoint the adequacies and/or the discrepancies between both practices of an original urban space. Thus, our study shows that gardens and parks cannot be apprehended merely as having an ornamental function and as being national heritage but also as now bearing several meanings ranging from the ideological and political to the economy, the social and the cultural. Through these meanings the places are endowed with a fundamental mirror effect function. The observation and study of these areas paves the way for a finer understanding of the societies that breed and foster them. Our research on spatial practices thus comes within the framework of a geography that is at once urban, social and cultural

Pastures represent a resource for Brazilian cattle ranching, with the spittlebug as their main pest because of the damaged caused in the hot and rainy season that cattle should be broken to recover from drought pasture during the months above. To reduce the use of chemical insecticides is necessary to develop alternative control methods. In this scenario receives prominent cultural control and fertilization is balanced practice that improves the nutritional status of soil, resulting in the development of forage supplementation and possible induction of resistance in plants. Therefore, in order to verify the promotion of antibiosis and tolerance, was evaluated the effects of different doses of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) in Brachiaria ruziziensis (Germain & Evrard) exposed to Mahanarva spectabilis (Distant, 1909) on condition of green house. For the realization of three experiments were used eggs, nymphs and adult of spittlebug and three different doses of NPK. Eggs were deposited in the soil in pots containing brachiaria and, after 32 days, were assessed on nymphs. In another stage nymphs were placed at the base of plants of brachiaria and after 10 days evaluated the damage to plants by the nymphs and growth, tiller number, sprouting and chemical quality of forage. In the third experiment cercopidae adults were placed in cages containing Brachiaria. After five days, was evaluated the damage caused by insects to plants and dry matter production, regrowth and chemical quality of forage. It was found that fertilization did not cause antibiosis, however, the application of half dose of NPK was sufficient to decrease by more than 20% damage by insects to forage, to ensure regrowth in more than 70% when there was a low infestation of nymphs and the presence of adults, higher dry matter production, increase the number of tillers and increase cellulose plants, indicating that there was the promotion of tolerance. Thus, it is concluded that fertilization is an effective alternative to reduce the damage caused by spittlebugs.

The protean aspect of the heroic environment engages the analysis towards a preliminary distinction between a primitive space on the one hand and a transformed place on the other. The study proposes to reveal the phantasmagoric spaces born of places and spaces strongly connoted. The imaginary landscapes, which constitute the second part of our study, assimilate many mythological references which participate in the narrative success. The imaginary spaces, specified by their intertextual charge, open in a complex and highly referential way the creation of Sylvie Germain’s spaces. This complexity is reflected in the physical and intellectual paths of heroes. In this way, the author paradoxically creates her own textual space, to which she gives a significant place in the novels. Finally, the examination emphasizes the movement, which characterizes the aesthetic of Germain, and which proposes a narrative singularity. It is to the textual spaces that we are led. The final interrogation questions the disappearance of the geographic referent when the place is less and less accompanied by a history, a location or a name. The spaces traversed, studied, fantasized, urban, natural, invite reflection to undertake a topographic taxonomy in tie and tension with the stratification of the heroic journey. If the place, the space or the landscape treated in our research are at the heart of a author’s writing process in the imagery of the soil to the rooted spaces, the narrative wandering, marked by the abandonment of spatial precisions in the last stories, interrogates the author about its present relation to space and retrospectively on its function in previous creation

Full textThis work presents the exile of the jacobites at paris and saint-germain-en-laye after the glorious revolution of 1688. Jacobitism is despincted as a political power involved in the international relationship untill the death of the sun king in 1715. The exiled community was based upon three institutions ; the court of saint-germainand the central figure of the king, the irish regiments in louis xiv'army and british religious communities in paris. The status of stangers in the ancien regime france and the difficulties, both on the judicial and institutional point of view, of the "aliens" to get integrated are the very center of this study. The demographic and social characteristics of the exiled community are described : the outsanding number of the irish, the high proportion of members of the gentry, the number of women, the bad relations between the three national groups, inner violence and suspicion from french authorities. . . Sir daniel arthur the irish banker, and his sons give an exemple of an irish network all over europe, socially integrated into french society but still in balance between national and religious fidelity to the stuarts and success in france

Full textThe Parisian silversmith Pierre Germain the Roman (1703-1783). A career near the silversmiths of the king. The Parisian silversmith Pierre Germain the Roman (Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, 1703-Paris, 1783), known for his book the Éléments d’orfèvrerie, had an original career. During his youth he worked for the silversmiths of the king, Thomas Germain (1726-1729); and after some time in Rome (1729-1733), worked for Jacques Roettiers (1733-1736) and as an apprentice for Nicolas Besnier from 1736. Master in 1744, he kept working for Roettiers until 1755-1756. Great messenger of the University, fond of engravings, he published in 1748 the largest book of models of the time, Élémentsd’orfèvrerie, 100 plates of rococo religious and civil silverware, engraved by Bacquoy and Pasquier, reprinted and copied until the 19th century in France and abroad (London, Turin). He also published in 1751 a short Livre d’ornemens. Installed quai des orfèvres, he had a small production, 1410 kg of silver up to his death, beautiful or simple objects, including orders for Joseph I of Portugal under contract for François Thomas Germain (1755-1756, 1765), for the Wal de Baronville family (1761-1763), the princess of Asturias in collaboration with Philippe Caffieri and Thomas Chancellier (1765), the Wandalin Mnisech (1762-1764), the Rocheblave (1777), the count of Artois and the princess of Ligne (1782). This study also covers artists he knew well: in Paris, his masters Germain, Roettiers, Besnier, his collegue Denys Frankson, his apprentices Ange Joseph Aubert and Pontaneau; in Avignon, the Clerc and Mézangeau families and Claude Imbert, his parents the architects J.-B. and François Franque, the organ builder Charles Boisselin; in Marseille, the Durand and Giraud families and his nephew Antoine Germain

Full textThe royal house, founded in the 12th century, is developped with Philippe Auguste and Louis IX. They set up a royal chapel with a permanent chaplain, a superintendant, a water adduction system, a garden and a private hunting ground. The surrounding houses were Les Loges in the forest of Laye, casties of Montjoie and Retz in the forest of Marly. The architectural evolution of the royal house is a permanent extension of the residential area with each monarch. A first oblong royal accommodation with a cellar is extended at the end of the 13th century on a structure of royal accommodation / residential tower. A second royal accommodation is founded in the 14th century and the cellar is use again. The building of a surrounding wall with a path round the battlements around the area of the residence by Charles V is the last extension of the royal house and now the place is call « castle » in the medieval texts

Full textThrough the notion of symbolism in the novel, this thesis deals with a corpus of works written by Sylvie Germain, Henry Bauchau and Philippe Le Guillou. Thanks to fictional and narrative techniques, these authors' approach belongs to a literature between the mythological novel, the initiation rite genre or the psychoanalytical approach. The notion of symbol fits into the directions mentioned above ; however, the three novelists' approach cannot be restricted to one of these notions. The symbolic novel identifies with modern and contemporary questionings about representation in writing which appears through symbolism in the novels, for figuration turns into signification and appeals interpretation : it is both construction and metamorphosis. As a consequence, in these works the world is perceived with its philosophical and spiritual dimensions that are inherent in symbolism : the one of the man in the world seen in his entirety with whom communication is possible and the one of the figuration of the invisible whether it is another dimension of reality or deep inwardness. In these works, the theme of the man confronted to what is beyond him or what escapes from his reality impacts on the poetry of the novel : it is the writing itself that expresses an appearance or an inadequation with its topic and thus reveals an empty transcendance which paradoxal figuration exists in fictional language

Full text“Transfers of the contemporary French novel” analyses the various stages of the transfers of the novels of three contemporary French writers, Jean Echenoz, Philippe Djian and Sylvie Germain towards Germany: the editorial context and the elements of the peritext, the translation of the novels and their universes, the critical and journalistic reception. The specificity of the approach is to consider all these moments of transfer and the different actors and mediators involved, in order to follow step by step the course of the transferred works. The purpose is to demonstrate the preliminary and operational norms and strategies in the publishing and the translation of the novels as well as the expectations concerning the contemporary French novel, detectable through the critical reception of the writers from now on considered as representative of this reception

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze the ways in which irony supports a metafeministic voice, a contemporary feminism, in continuity with past struggles, which is integrated into the writing rather than being the motive in Rafaële Germain's novels (Soutien-gorge rose et veston noir, Gin tonic et concombre et Volte-face et malaises). Certainly, these novels, like any good series of chick lit, are primarily intended to entertain their readers. True to the genre, alcohol, conquests and twisted relationships rub shoulders. Nevertheless, omitting to analyze these texts due to their rosy-candy nature would be a mistake: the smiles they induce often herald the irony within these words. As observed by Lucie Joubert, this is not trivial since irony often conceals a potential whistleblower. Thus, despite the prejudices surrounding this genre associated with mass-consumption literature, look beyond the giddiness of their colorful covers. By mainly considering the interpersonal relationships that the various heroines have with their entourage, that is their mother, father, friends, lovers, this thesis sheds light on how irony plays, in a way, the role of a guard that protects them against certain particularly stubborn social conceptions. (For example, that a woman must absolutely share her life with a man, any man, if she wishes to be happy.) Always without indulging into a debonair optimism since the chick lit perpetuates many gender stereotypes associated to both, women and men – simultaneously a restrictive heteronormative speech – this analysis will demonstrate that irony allows novels to be part of a metafeminist trajectory, and take a step back, here and there, towards more conservative speeches.

Full textDuring the 20th century, the relationship between Media and Sport were very fertile. The revenues generated by the sale of broadcast rights, the Communication and the Media have a great influence over the global success of football. Media and sports organizations have a relationship based on tensions and cooperation and also very fluid boundaries between them. In this present work, we want to understand how media influence sports organizations, more precisely, how football clubs become a space of content and information production. Recently, sports organizations have invested on media and communication departments, either by hiring public relations and media professionals or by creating their own corporate means of communication. We have selected as research objects, the media of three sports organizations: the WebTV of Paris Saint-Germain (France), the website of Botafogo (Brazil) and the subscription TV channel of Benfica (Portugal). Our empirical work was based on ethnographic interviews with the media and communication staff at these football clubs. Based on our interviews, we aim to answer three questions about the creation of these club owned media: why they were created; how they are structured; and who is responsible for their implementation. The choice of these three clubs allowed a comparative study and the analysis of different markets and realities with diverse levels of modernization, that together with each local social context made possible an attempt to offer a generalization about club owned media and the consequences for sports journalism and the relationship between sport and media

Full textIn pursuance of the rules fixed for parish vestries operations, Saint-Germain's vestry men draw up, in Argentan at the 15 th century, accounts to justify their activity. Some of these accounts saved from destruction and collected in a 183 folios compilation, are now kept at the national library in paris. The edition of this compilation constitutes the frame of the work. The set formed by the vouchers is rather extensive : from 1410 to 1476. But it is also incomplete and only thirty-six years are finaly concerned though it does not question compilation interest. The accounts of saintgermain's vestry are an essential source to understand the running of the vestry but also to approach the actual reality of the observances in this church. The critical commentary added to the edition (analysis, index of names, glossary) will help the reading, the understanding and any possible use of the document. Working on this documentary set demands to replace saint-germain's parish in its urban setting. Argentan at the 15th century is a small but a real town. Sole religious edifice within enclosed town, saint-germain's church takes up a central place. The vestry of this church fills a leading part in the town life. The analysis of its social structure reveals the vestry as a scene of notability and a range of power. The analysis of saint-germain's vestry management induces to study the evolution of reciepts and expenses structures. .
