In the article, an attempt has been made to analyze the systems of control of social communication based on the history of censorship in Germany. Apart from the historical context, reference has been made to the relationship of systems of censorship to modernization processes. In addition, the crucial role of legal awareness in society has been indicated. Within the scope of the present analysis, important methodological issues concerning research on forms, manifestations and effects of censorship related to the XXth century German literature have been considered.

While censorship touched upon the careers of every German writer in the nineteenth century, a few cases stood out to contemporaries, defining their era. If the Demagogenverfolgung stamped the early 1820s and the prohibition of Young Germany the 1830s, the assault on left-wing or “Young” Hegelianism in 1842–43 was the major censorship case of the decade. Banning the Deutsche Jahrbücher, Rheinische Zeitung, and Leipziger Allgemeine Zeitung was part of a significant, coordinated effort to undermine a small but influential faction of radical social critics. This article argues that the growth of a free press in nineteenth-century Germany went hand in hand with the growth of an official, government-sponsored, press. The collapse of pre-publication censorship in 1848 prompted the development of increasingly sophisticated (and relatively successful) press control strategies by German governments, in the shape of official newspapers, semi-official newspapers, and indirect government press influence. Government press policy was essentially reactive. Changes in press policy were usually prompted by political events. Furthermore, government press covera

The censorship process during the New Economic Policy Period was rather unbalanced due to the human factor. Up until 1928, certain stages of censoring the manuscript that started with initial reading and resulted in the approving mark on the typographical card, could be omitted, as the case of Saratov author L.A. Slovokhotov illustrates. The study of the archives shows that the attitude to the media in foreign languages issued by national minorities was more lenient than the attitude to religious media in the Russian language. These include the Weiße Reihe of twentieth-century poetry from around the world. The fact that Wallace Stevens did not appear in it until more than twenty years after his appearance in the West German edition, from which numerous translations were taken, may have banal causes or indicate a delayed hospitality. This study dives into the complicated historical and cultural conditions behind the censorship of Richard Oswald's seminal 1919 silent picture, "Anders Als Die Andern," during the Weimar Republic. In the aftermath of World War I, Germany's Weimar Republic emerged as a hub for artistic and cultural innovation, but it also struggled with economic insecurity, political upheaval, and societal biases. In 1920, the film, a bold investigation of homosexuality, was censored under Section 175 of the German penal code, which criminalized male-to-male relationships. This study looks into the intertwined

The printer he commissions moves shop and starts printing, not aware of severe clerical censorship. With part of the job done he has to move to another location hoping for a more liberal policy there.
